Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (I'm very, very confident about the 2024 Horns...)

He’s not as grouchy as some think.

I met him at a gas station several years ago the Friday night before the TX/ou game. I got brave and introduced myself to him while he was pumping gas. He shook my hand, thanked me for being a fan, then nodded at my Texas shirt I had on and said, “Good luck tomorrow.”

I took that to mean he’s a Texas fan. 😎
LOve it!

Damn you! This was not the first time I spent 2-3 hours going down YouTube reaction video rabbit hole. I quit and will now go to bed. I think Phil Collins was the last time with In The Air Tonight.
It's a good time. No need to feel regret. ;)

Hotel California wouldn't be in my Eagles top ten. The Best of My Love would, as would Peaceful Easy Feeling. Everyone has different tastes. The Eagles have given me plenty of great memories.

It would be very expensive to follow the Horns around for 4 playoff games. Pretty grueling too.
Let's see that Top 10!

Ketch, why should we expect to have a higher batting average re: signing more elite in-state players? I don’t see a particular reason why we should have some sort of advantage over other elite national schools, when it comes to signing highly ranked Texas kids. These kids grew up with Texas sucking. This isn’t Louisiana or Georgia, where everyone in the state is the fan of one college team. I don’t subscribe to this narrative that we have an advantage, but I’m open to arguments.
History shows you to be wrong.

Proximity is a big deal, even if less of a big deal in 2024-25.

Seems like offering the high three star types, and high risk high reward projects is the way to go right? Wouldn’t those type guys be an upgrade to help prepare for games if we’re doing away with walkons? Now guys like taafe when he first got here would just be offers, instead of PWOs. The ones you hit on you keep, the ones that want playing time but won’t get it here will transfer. And it could give you protection if you miss in a class, or injury. Imagine if we had a mid-high 3 star RB in his 2nd year on campus that you brought in and he ended up being an average to Good player. He could help this year. You can still save spots for the portal.
I think it would be a mistake to not use the extra space to maximize your roster.

Would love to see a Top 10 with The Best of POCO.

1. Hotel California

I think a case can be made that it's the best rock song of all-time. If you ever want to know how great this song is, go to Youtube and watch a few reaction videos from people that have never listened to the song before.

Much like Shawshank Redemption no matter my mood or how many times I’ve seen or heard it, if it’s on I never turn it off. Just an absolute masterpiece of a song.

I have pre-season hype PTSD since setting foot on campus in 1975 followed by 49 years in Austin and being a longtime Longhorn season ticket holder. So I am kind of an eternal pessimist for all the times we have squandered talent and opportunity to be more than we have been.

It feels to me like a ton of our talent is stacked on the offensive side of the ball. And even with that we are a Blue injury away from becoming a one dimensional team. For a top 5 preseason team, I don’t think we have the kind of overall depth we need on the defensive side of the ball to compete with Georgia and Ohio State at this moment. Not the kind of elite defense like our 1983 and 2005 teams that could take us to a title game if our offense has an off day. I am still not sold on our defensive recruiting and excellence at all the defensive coaching spots.

And lastly I am still not totally sold on some of Sark’s play calling in crunch time. Recent games like Oklahoma, Houston, and Washington are still etched in my memory as pretty weak game calling and execution at critical times. For all of his talent, Ewers still comes out and looks incredibly average several games a year. He does not look like a future NFL star to me.

I think we are going to have very good year, this is a good team, we will make the 12 team playoff. I just don’t see us as really having what it takes to win it all which to me is how you should feel slotted as a top 5 team to start the season.

I hope I am wrong. I think we can play the game of our season and beat someone like Georgia, similar to the Alabama game. But I also see potential pitfalls all over the schedule. I think we lose a game to a team we are all chalking up as a sure W looking at it through the pre-season lens.

Having said all this. I think we wil put it all together in the 2025-30 time frame and bring home our next national championship. Just don’t see it this year. But I do agree with a previous poster, it is nice to be relevant again in the national conversation.
9 of the 19 super blue chips in the program are on defense. Ohio State has 13 of 29. Georgia is 19 of 28.

We saw what all that talent at Chelsea are capable of when it comes together against a bad team.

I still know nothing about this Chelsea squad. It does look like we are gonna give up a shit ton of goals. But we might score a ton as well. This style of play is more visually appealing. But we might be in a lot of 4-3 games.

No might about it. It's gonna happen and it should be entertaining.

Great TTFTW @Ketchum

You make a fair point about the Eagles. You could do a second and maybe even a third top 10 list for them and still have to leave some really great songs out. Bold to attempt to whittle it down to 10, I will not nitpick.

On the Super Blue chips, I'm sold on using that as a metric. Great idea and thanks for compiling it.

Over time, one might try to refine it by factoring in some other items (position hit rate, depth chart, and experience). For example, Kelvin Banks and Quinn Ewers in year 3 as starters each should probably count more than Arch as a backup. On the other super blue a 5* WR/RB might actually be just as valuable as a third year guy. Just speculating, though.

Feels good to be in game week. Hooke em!

JD Souther is from Wellington in the Panhandle and graduated from Amarillo Tascosa before Linda Ronstadt dragged him to Laurel Canyon.
He wrote a lot of the songs with Glenn Frey (eg New Kid in Town etc)
Glad you brought up JD--great information too.
I Iove JD--he also wrote songs with Jackson Browne, and they were buddies.
He also co-wrote one of my all-time favorites "Her Town Too" with James Taylor.

I expect this class to end up in the national top 10 and probably somewhere between 6-8. To win a title, you need to mix in occasional No.1 overall class if possible.
Absolutely--and that Something Sark needs to do--number 1 overall class, here and there.

Without question! Some of my all-time favorite harmonies.

I love that youtube video of this song--which is slightly different than the recording. outstanding in every way. If you haven't seen it--check it out.

These two should have been in the top 10:

New Kid in Town and Lyin Eyes

Replace these for Witchy Woman and I Can't Tell You Why even though I'm a huge fan of Timothy B. Schmit.
I can't tell you why could be (could be-depending on the day--although it's hard to really choose a favorite Eagles Song--they're all so great) my all-time favorite Eagles Song.
One of these Nights is way up at the top too.

We are in alignment. Texas is on track to end up with a damn good year of talent acquisition when all is said and done. Also, I have said in another thread that I feel the wheels coming off this year for the Cowboys. Just a feeling.
Cowboys are going to have to make some hard choices at quarterback. (Although, I don't think Jones with have the intestinal fortitude)

Yep
It was live on a sound stage ….JD hit the high notes !!
He was totally lit but said that was why it sounded so good!!
I don't doubt it--drugs, say what you will, helped create some of the greatest songs in Rock-in-Roll history.
Eagles-prime example.
