Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend... (Now is no time to flinch)

Usually I'd agree that a tie goes to the younger player. But as you explained on the modcast, @Ketchum , one could argue that Sark's entire tenure turns on getting the QB right *this year*. Under those circumstances, I might go with experience over upside in attempt to win as many games as possible right now.
Not necessarily, Sark needs to explode next year on the field, not this year, and the only way to do that is have the QB question settled by second or third game this year and play him to where when next year rolls around you’ll have BIJAN in his final year, very experienced WR’s and Olinemen in Sarks system and a QB ready from day one. I don’t care which one it is but to me the tie would go to Card w his three remaining years.

I mean... they've had two really good tackles.

One was a Rivals 250 player and the other was a high three star.
Three. You missed Calvin Anderson, now with the Denver Broncos. A 2 star recruit.

He was a transfer. I'm not sure you get to count his ranking. The thinning of the herd was done for Texas in that case.

Hate is a strong word. My wife doesn’t hate anything…she strongly dislikes me for loving your biz too much. Punky loves everyone.
I loved the hell out of that show. I think a part of it was because I didn't have a dad. I just loved her when I was a kid.

I think the thing that may turn that common wisdom on it's head is the fact that Casey just obtained his degree and can bounce at a moment's notice and potentially end up starting somewhere else at some point during the 2021 season. If he loses the starting job to Card before the season, he will likely never be the starter at UT unless Card is injured or fails miserably. On the other hand, Card just got accepted to the prestigious business school and even if he didn't play a single minute during the upcoming season, he would still have 4 full years of college eligibility left. To go from having two experienced QB's with exciting potential, to being one injury away from having true freshman Charles Wright as your starter before coaching a single game would be a major SNAFU on Sark's part. You don't think that's gonna play at least a small role in who he ultimately decides to roll out as the starter in game one? Particularly if there's no sizeable, on the field separation between the two.
What’s Thompson gonna do if he finds out in late Aug. that he’s the backup? Shane didn’t pout when Sam beat him out, he was mature and stayed while at the same time telling horrible Tom not to play him in more than 4 games. Casey is just as thoughtful and mature
AND smart enough to know that he will play some this year and still have two years of eligibility afterwards. I don’t buy that Casey automatically bolts.

The best. Shown it to the twins? My kids are same age and I’m about to dig it up.

Understand your point but listening to his Dad's comments and people around him I believe he will book enter grad school somewhere immediately and work to play there this season.
Plus his camp is pretty smart bet they have Plan B already in place just in case.
Then you are 1 injury away from Charles Wright yeah right that is scary just saying!!

No Chrissy?

I'm not saying he automatically bolts, but there's a much greater likelihood that he would bolt than Card if he's not chosen. And I don't think it has anything to do with pouting or being immature. The clear implication in a situation where a player loses a close competition with the younger guy, is that the younger guy has passed him over. Much like I don't hold it against Garrett Gilbert for checking out and leaving the team after the 2011 season started, I wouldn't hold it against Thompson if he made a similar business decision. Even if he finds out he's been passed over in late August, he'd still be able to grad transfer to some place like UH or SMU and potentially earn a starting spot during the upcoming season. I'd be pleased as punch if he were to stay after losing the job, but if you're Sark, his possible exodus has to be part of your calculation.

You play the best player. Not doing just that has contribute to us being where we are and watching good players leave the program

I think the whole O U legacy thing throws some people off, me included, and that he may not be loyal to U T if not the starter but if I’m not mistaken o u didn’t even offer him so I don’t know that there’s the normal disdain you might think there is toward U T in his camp. Sark has to play the best player because that’s best for the team and he can confidently do that knowing he’s not the one who got us in this predicament in the first place.

Pop has to have an allstar team to win!! Either in S A or the olympics.
It's actually a testament to Pop's greatness that he was able to take unheralded young players like Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard and mold them into some of the top players in the NBA. Players picked where they were in the draft don't normally end up at the levels they did.

By experience, you mean the other guy that has never started a game?

Play cousin, please. ;)

We already agree that Thompson has more experience. And I'm pretty sure we already agree that Thompson will start the first game because of that experience. Our only disagreement (I think) is when Card will take over.

B-S: Texas has more speed on offense than at any time since Mack’s final year.

I think the origin of this discussion was with Ketch's point about what would happen if there was not a clear separation between the two players. In this case, idea was that Card might be picked simply because he was the younger player and therefore more likely to be your long term answer. Obviously, if one guy clearly outperforms the other in camp, you roll with him.

We won't know until play begins how things are going. I suspect only bad news comes early and the degree that we have good news would not be clear until the OU game. Any win before that would be called a "supposed to" game, whether that is true or not.

Sorry, I failed you, Drew and everyone else.
What are you thinking this team does at WR now in recruiting? There are a few players that can help raise this class up. What are the odds for Greene, Neto, and Wiggins? Those three would help a ton. I think this class should only take 4 stars or higher if you can't land that save it for a transfer.
