Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Ok, let's talk about the defense...)

Bingo.

Orlando has to take his personnel more into consideration.

I was never a fan of some of Greg Davis play calling at times but always admired his ability to adapt his schemes to his personnel when needed. Of course barring the power run Alabama offense that I think he didn’t want any part of.

Nah, Colt won every regular season game in 2009. And he put up 34 points or more (most over 50) in every game except the Nebraska B12 championship game.
That's so false I don't know where to begin.

Agreed. Neither QB looked impressive in Q1. It looked like it would be a defensive battle
And then both caught fire, Burrow even more so.

The difference is that Texas lost and LSU won, thus changing the prism through which fans viewed their performances.

I agree with you.

I guess my point is that, Texas had enough chances and just didn't capitalize. LSU wasn't stopped twice inside the red zone. It certainly isn't "Sam's fault" - he played as good as one could expect, but as you even said -- he was out QB'd this time

we agree!

I don't get that a lot all the time on Mondays.;)

Jones has been just a guy through two games.
Agree to disagree. He played out of his traditional role against LSU and was very good, although that decision may have been a mistake overall, as Sterns and Brown were nowhere to be found when they were playing zone.

Man, that's nice of you to say. Thanks!
You did do an outstanding job.
May be time to take a few days off of this site. The disrespect Sam is getting is pathetic.
Just imagine if Sam had actually thrown a pick or fumbled, like most QB’s do with regularity. All these haters who, incredibly, believed that Shane Buechele was better than Sam, would be calling for Casey to start. It’s embarrassing to know Longhorn Nation has fans this clueless.

I'm ok with saying Sam needs to work on the deep ball coming out of that game, as long as it's prefaced in proper context and listed after about 40 other things from that game.

Ketchum so if we would have got the onside kick and won would this conversation be happening? We put 38 points on them and should have been 45 easy! And there defense is great! Doesn’t add up to me. We’re one play different?

would we be having which conversation?

... I don't know if Khabib Nurmagomedov is the best pound-for-pound fighter in UFC history, but the conversation might just be between him and Jon Jones.

He is not better than prime GSP. Nobody was. Most dominant fighter ever. Guy went like 5 years without losing a round.

I don't view him as better than Jon and I can't say I really like Jon.

From 2009-13, he didn't finish a single fight. Oh, and he lost to Johnny Hendrix, who was probably on roids.

I do but maybe it’s the PEDs that cloud my view of Jon.
I think Cormier has been more dominant than GSP and Jon beat his ass twice.

Jon literally adopts whatever style another fighter uses and beats that fighter with their own specialty.

Welp, which regular season game did we lose? Which game did we put up less than 34? How many did we put up more than 45?

Since those are facts, I can only presume you are saying we won all 13 games with poor QB play?
Texas 16 OU 13

Five times Texas scored more than 45

Can you provide me with Colt's combined stat line for Tech, OU and Nebraska, arguably the three biggest games of the season?

I don’t fetch rocks.

Texas won all those games and went undefeated. There is a reason Colt’s Jersey was retired. You can’t change history.

Unlike Sam, Colt led his team to victory in all those games. Colt’s will and fight was as or more important than QB rating or lessor stats as compared to inferior opponents.

In fairness, Sam certainly did his part and has a rebuilding supporting cast around him, especially on the D side of the ball. 38 points should have beat LSU.

Colt was not chopped liver.

Here are the quarterback efficiency numbers for every quarterback that has been named a Heisman Finalist since 2009 (last 10 full seasons)

2017: Mayfield 198.9
2016 mayfield 196.4

2010: Kellen Moore 182.6
2010: Newton 182.0
2014: Mariota 181.7
2018: Haskins 174.1
2013 Manziel 172.9
2010: Luck 170.2
2011: Luck 169.7
2013: McCarron 167.2
2015: Watson 156.3
2012: Manziel 155.3
2016: Watson 151.1

Colt was historic in 2008.

He was a liability in 3 of the four biggest games of the 2009 season.

vs. Tech - 24 of 34 for 205 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT (outplayed by Taylor Potts)
vs. OU - 21 of 39 for 127 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT and 2 lost fumbles
vs. Neb. - 20 of 36 for 184 yards and 3 INT

Total in those three big games: 2 TD, 6 INT and 8 total turnovers

Garrett Gilbert was actually more productive in games against Tech, Nebraska and OU in 2010 than McCoy was the previous year against the same teams. Apples to oranges, yes, but it makes the point about how average McCoy was at big times as a senior.

Many Horn fans forget that Colt’s senior year didn’t come close to matching his stellar junior season, when he actually deserved the Heisman (and a berth in the BCS National Title game).

Not having Quan Cosby lined up on the opposite side of Jordan Shipley in ‘09 really hurt the Horn “dink and dunk” Greg Davis passing game that almost propelled UT to a Natty in ‘08. Colt actually had poor performances against OU and Nebraska in the Big 12 Title game in ‘09.

That 2009 team's best player on offense was Jordan Shipley. He probably should have been a Heisman finalist.

Just ask Alabama.

Thank you! At the time, I could not understand why Shipley was not a Heisman finalist. He was a complete game changer every week for a team that made the National Championship

Ketch, I know you are a huge Sam fan, as am I. My only point is that he missed, has missed, wide open receivers on deeper patterns time after time. He did it twice on Saturday night. While they are harder throws, he had open receivers who he could have easily hit by putting some air under the ball. Brewer was so open he could have lobbed the ball to him, but instead threw the ball hard into the ground nowhere near Cade. He also missed DD who was very open. He can and should learn from those game changing mishaps. Some practice and some coaching about how to complete long passes when the receiver is wide open would help. It's different from when he has to drill the ball into a tight window like the ball he completed to Jake. It would help us if he improved on this aspect of his game so I hope he does.
He’s a great QB, but not a great passer. Okay, cool. Hook ‘Em. Not a P5 school that wouldn’t take him in a New York minute.
