Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Time to do away with the scratch-offs...)

Brand new whiskey, in some room above the street, and single again make my top 10 but I’ll give some you put in another listen. No complaints with your top 5. Gary Stewart is the shit! @Ketchum

Not THE, just A country music king. He's literally nicknamed the king of honkeytonk.
King of honkeytonk isn't the same as a king of country music.
Don't get me wrong--I like Stewart, think he deserves recognition for his contributions and his uniqueness in style and voice, and certainly sentimental value.
But king is a lofty perch.

Recognized Kings of the 70s include
Merle Haggard
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
George Jones

Even guys like Conway Twitty, Don Williams, Ronnie Milsap etc, could be considered. Realistically, I don't think Gary Stewart is in that category. Just sayin' 😊

You wrote: "Where you get in a bind is with 3rd-5th year players that haven’t earned a 2 deep spot."

I'm saying that such a bind doesn't actually exist much beyond theory because the players you're talking about aren't hanging around into year 3, let alone year 4 or 5. Only a very small handful of such players exist on the roster as it stands. Here's the list as of today:

TE Juan Davis
OL Neto Umeozulu
OL Max Merrill
DT Jeray Bledsoe
DT Aaron Bryant

That's it. You can live with that many players sticking around and hoping the develop into something. It's not a big enough group from a volume standpoint to worry about.
I think I am just not expressing myself well. I don’t disagree with anything you are saying.

I read the initial comment and thought, ‘Am I missing something’. Then I read it again and a third time and shook my head. Thanks.

If you're the king of honky-tonk, you're a king of country music in my book.

Maybe they are taking your advice and only taking 1 or 2 HS WR. They will look to the portal for the rest.
I think they could take Lockett and Ffrench and not take anyone else unless he's special.

They don't need run of the mill 4-stars/ They signed two of those last year and I have no idea how they are going to get on the field.

I really enjoyed the roster analysis and strategic ramifications you offered up this week. Well articulated. Thanks.
Thanks, I'm not sure it scratched the itch for others. It might just be too in the weeds for most.

Telling people that you travel with 70 and only play 55-58. so why not change things so that you play with all 70 in the name of creating small margins isn't a fun read for some.

That being said, Brian Kelly totally echoed my thoughts today at SEC media day.

Excellent article. Let me restate what I think you are saying:
  1. Recruit HS players that their rankings and the staff’s analysis believe will likely be at least 2nd string by the 3rd year.
  2. The bottom 20% of a HS recruiting class has little chance of being in #1, so while they might make it, the odds they will are against them making it.
  3. Let Baylor, TCU, Texas St, etc take those guys and in their 4th or 5th year, money-whip the ones that are starting in lesser schools to Austin to fill gaps each year. While they might not start in Austin like they would at Baylor, we will pay them more and they will play in a better conference with more exposure and have a shot at developing further into a starter and maybe make it to the NFL.
Is this correct?

I wonder if this was too much. 😂

Count me in that boat. I have a solid, working understanding of the data/research in terms of recruiting, which has immensely helped shape how I look at recruiting and I've even taken that narrative to friends in conversations. It's good stuff. It matters.

I don't personally care about all names/research behind it, but it's cool that you provide as proof. Lots of hard work, bravo on that. I personally like the output but don't need the cooking.

But this topic feels like it has been the theme of the 10TFTW all off-season and it is a bit grinded at this point. I'm sure there are plenty of 10TFTW that don't involve this stuff at all, but it "feels" like it's been every week. Sure different angles like this week's roster depth, but still thematically the same.

So, my 2 cents is... I get it. I believe it, and mostly agree with it. It's been one of the better "learning" things I've uncovered in CFB in a long time, and I hope you keep tracking the data. But I'm pretty tapped out for this summer.

FYI - When I tried to "educate" my friends about this they could not care less and didn't believe it mattered. Bud Elliot's list is all that's needed. I have suffered your exact pain... ;)

Fair enough.😁
And I've heard him live in a honkey tonk--so king of honky tonk I'm on board with.

1. Year two.

There are only 5 players on the current roster who didn't meet that requirement. All others have transferred and proved to be a waste of roster investment/time.

2. Correct. 80+ of the bottom 30% of the roster transfer without ever making an on-field contribution.

3. Bingo. Steal all of the TRey Moore's and Mattthew Golden's.

For me, honky tonk music was country music in my childhood.
Great looking women (particularly those who could dance)
Two-stepping at Dallas Night Club, Midnight Rodeo, Billy Bob's.....
Ice cold beer, and
and acts like Gary Stewart on stage.

Doesn't get a lot better than that.

This will sound random, but have you already done a Top Ten Movies of John Candy?
Back in March

The honky tonk is the soul of country music. Most of the shit “country” music these days would never be played in those old school joints. The patrons would throw them out in the street.

Need to do a deep dive into last few portal years and see where the cut off has been for contributing to the new teams. See if the 10th Best lb has contributed to his new team etc. I'm guessing the number is pretty high. Might be better to chart just top 10 schools in sec and big 10 maybe

Does it count if it was just a juke box in a smoky dim light bar?

the VFW, in Dickinson
American Legion Post 554 on Hwy 3 in League City? ( I learned how to cheat at shuffleboard there. Never got caught.)
The Red Keg in League City
Eating the pickled eggs and drinking a coke with peanuts in it,
chasing the cats in the sawdust at the Thunderbird on I-45

all the while, singing along with Gary Stewart.

Good stuff Ketch. I do, however, think the 2024 squad enters the season better than the 2023 squad.
