Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Florida 5 and South Florida Roots)

Re: Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Florida 5 and South Florida

I typically only watch action movies and porn, but I agree with your thoughts on Theory of Everything and Birdman. Excellent acting in both and very good movies overall. Especially Birdman.

Unbroken is the best wartime book I have read and I was expecting a bit more from the movie. Sadly, I was quite underwhelmed.

If he truely believes these pampered Texas kids can't cut it, they will pick up on that within the team. That will be a disaster. I know I'll get bashed for that opinion.
I wasn't demeaning Texas HS players, rather I was explaining the way some people do value the talent in the state. Missing the point.

Ketch was giving someone else's view

Great write-up Ketch and a timely story/recollection.

I never knew or even suspected such a thing of the state's best players. I did particularly notice our O-Line rarely living up to pre-college expectations in my eyes. Be all that as it may, I want and always wanted the best players, period. I can remember a time when I don't believe we landed 1 of the top 100 in the state and the cream of the crop left the state in droves to play elsewhere. My philosophy is we can pull the best from wherever they are. If that is the state of Texas - great. If that is the state of California, or Florida, or Ohio or Pennsylvania then also great. I would suggest such an approach would always foster a healthy competitive spirit across the entire team - building a culture over time.

I keep waiting to see if anything ever comes out of it, but the politics involved are tricky.

That first section may be as good as anything you've written in the years I've been following you.

- Coaches knew by then that McCoy was going to be good. VY knew Colt was going to be good, he talked about it often. The only thing they doubted, understandably, was his ability to do in an actual game.

-Players either have it or they don't right from the start. Coaches knew VY had it as a Freshman and coaches knew McCoy had it as a Freshman before they ever played a down. Once they did, it was simply a matter of maximizing their talent and cleaning up mistakes. With other QBs your goal is to make them serviceable.

-What is the basis for stating Heard had "early freshman struggles" and a "lack of a picture-perfect fit into Shawn Watson's offense"? Simple conjecture? Extrapolating coach-speak? Refresh us on the source of this Ketch.

- Again, every QB needs "baking", but the guy is already either on the path to glory to just be 'serviceable'. Baking doesn't change the ingredients.

No basis for this other than some chatter on the board and a little fact that we just landed his HS teammate, but I wouldn't rule out Strickland at this point. In fact, I bet our chances are better with him than Lodge and Burt. Just an opinion.

Great thread, Ketch.

Gary Patterson still seems to be able to get hungry Texas kids.

I'm all for getting hungry, talented kids from anywhere we can, but over the long term, University of Texas football will succeed to the extent it can attract outstanding TEXAS talent.

Good breakdown of remaining schollies.

You forgot to factor in Carlos Strickland in the mix. He'll be OV'ing soon.

I think your point on a large number of Texas kids is spot on....even kids from small towns like Refugio grow up with indoor practice facilities and Gold's Gym quality gyms....they are also extremely well coached, and enter college, at times, believing they know more than they really do. I'll take a few kids each year, with nasty on field attitudes and junkyard dog work habits, and I don't care where they come from....

Re: Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Florida 5 and South Florida

January 16th

RB: Brossette
DT: Mack
DB: Hill and Fields

January 23rd

QB: Locksley
OL: Richmond
DB: Baker and Fields

Ketch,
Dumb question but is Fields coming in both weekends?

Also, I agree with you on Unbroken, liked the movie but was disappointed at the same time. Great book, good movie.

I agree 100% with your scout friend about Texas kids. I've been thinking all year about how much Aggie(after 3 years of the pick of the Texas litter) look a lot like some of those Mack Brown teams that got smoked by OU. Just not living up to their billing and certainly not laying it out on the field. There are several just horrendous tackling efforts this year that aggie fans will probably remember for a long time kind of like we did with Cedric Griffin and Mykelle Thompson and their posterizing efforts against OU.

Ketch,

Above you referred to Mack as a long-shot. Didn't you previously predict Mack to Texas, or at least say you really liked their chances? What has changed?

Go see Imitation Game asap. Best movie of the year and Cumberbatch should win best actor.

I say it's Mack, Brossette, Boyd, Fields and Kai. . . .if Burt goes to auburn, then Strickland or newsome. No inside knowledge nut wouldn't surprise me if newsome goes to Tenn

Good write up Ketch. And thanks to the individuals who quoted the entire story in their reply. It makes scrolling on a cell phone that much more fun.

The reality of the situation is that five seasons of walking through the desert in search of a quarterback position has left a large number of you slightly delirious and unable to rationally approach the subject.

Thanks for summing this point up for most of us. It's also why you have the largest Rivals team page. We are a crazy lot. Great TTFTW! As miserable as I and the majority of the board was after the Arkansas game, I'm very pleased with what CS has company have done done on the recruiting trail. I think your story on those desperate kids having to succeed is very much in line with what CS said in the puff piece the LHN ran after he was hired. I keep referencing it here and I keep thinking about how he said he had to succeed after leaving Arkansas and not ever wanting to have to come back home a failure. This man will not let current entitled players take his ship down for him. He will not fail.

The dude's from Austin. Just sayin'.

why wouldn't I care about spelling?

was a joke to go with "Catch". apparently not a good one. i just thought you'd want to be correct on "Linklater."

Excellent write up. Especially liked the Heard part naturally. Give him time, he will be great. With the improved OL and with Heard, the offense will be so much funner next season.

Hufftex- is there some reason you had to include Ketch's entire post in your reply.

Couldn't you have just replied to his post. His 10 thoughts are pretty long and it's a pain in the ass to have to scroll through the whole thing again to get to your reply or the next post.

Sorry for the rant, it's just when scrolling on my phone it's a pain in the ass.

+1. I don't get it either.

I've always wondered about all these elite kids...spoiled..pampered. Look at what's happening in Gaggy Land...look at the guys TCU and Baylor are winning with.

It's a pain on a laptop too. never understood why people do that.

Ketch, it seems that you don't think we are going to find a transfer QB that can come in and play next year. With the QB situtation being the elephant in the room for next year, how does Locksley help when he appears to be another fish out of water in Watson's system? It seems obvious that we need someone who can provide immediate help next year while our young QB's are developing. Going into next season with Swoopes, Heard and a couple of freshmen looks like another recipe for disaster. I can't imagine Swoopes ever being more than a backup for the rest of his career here.
