Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend: 24 Hours Later...

After last night? Is this a real question?
It is. You can answer it any way you want.

The implications are significant if the answer is no, especially based on a game.

You guys would have run Mack out of town after his first three games, no?

What coach do you know admits being wrong quickly?
I don’t see where starting CT at least thru OU (see where the chips fall) and continuing to let Card grow and develop is an admission on his part he was wrong. He has openly admitted Casey needs to play and will play and the decision to not start Casey was razor thin, even if those words were just rhetoric. He can simply say the competition at every position is still ongoing and that CT has earned the right to start vs Rice..
it’s actually pretty simple, I think his team would not disagree with CT starting, would probably respect him more. They know CT and his passion and desire to put this team on his back.

I mean we don’t have to run Sark out of town to be skeptical of his future here. I still believe but if I see 1-2 more performances like this, it’s hard to say he is the right guy.

As a fan of the team, it really bothers me that any of us don’t think it should be Casey Thompson until he screws up. It makes me think we don’t want to win.

AfterJohn Mackovic ? I don’t think so…

James had some shitty performances as a young player. So did VY. So has every quarterback that Texas has pretty much ever had outside of possibly Colt.

VY flashed though. Bad games still have flashes. There were no flashes from Card last night. Zero. Like, if someone said, ‘what are this guy’s strengths based on tonight?’, you would struggle to come up with something. He didn’t get hurt? He didn’t throw it right to the other team?

you mean less than 20 minutes for Thompson.
So, 7 touchdown drives and 2 field goal drives in 20 minutes is bad? You want him to slow down his drives? I’m truly baffled by this response. (And I think he’s played more than 20 minutes, but even if so, . . .)

Its what he has been given. He’s done a lot with what he has been given, which was out of his control. He’s done his part. In spades.

but changing quarterbacks at this stage would make Sarkisian look like he doesn't know what he's been doing for the last month.
I don't agree with this statement at all. Sark made a decision based on the information he had at the time (off-season workouts, spring ball and fall camp) but this sport is about what happens in games. And it is not uncommon for that data point to change dramatically when the lights come on.

We've seen it in Austin with our own eyes several times at the position. Morenz/Brown, VY/Mock and to some degree Simms/Applewhite.

I think Casey's production when he's on the field warrants a further look. Is Sark not allowed to come to a similar decision because he went with Card on August 9? That just doesn't make a lot of sense to me with what is at stake for both Sark and the program. He has to get it right this season, no matter how he gets to the conclusion. Wouldn't you agree?

Man i

Man isn't that the whole issue- 95 percent of this board lost all trust for their HC after 2 games.

I'm not saying they're wrong based on how bad it was, but that's a FAST turn.
It says more about those that trusted him in the first place. He was the most unproven "head coach" hire since Mackovic. Coordinator to HC fails way more often than it succeeds. Being great with an NFL roster isn't hard. Bill O'Brien is doing it. Same goes for OL coaches.

The question wasn’t whether we should run him out of town. I’ve never come close to posting that. The question was whether he won our trust with last night’s performance, and whether that trust will carry me through his decision to continue with the Card experiment if this is indeed what we see after our first offensive possession against Rice. No, it’s silly to say we should fire Sark on one loss (even though that was an atrocious loss, worst loss since Kansas). But do I trust him? No, he has lost that from a large percentage of the fan base. I hope like hell he earns that back before three years are up.

Really good summary and overall post Ketch. I’ve been along for this ride long enough to be numb as well.

Well well

The ONLY answer is to start CT. Period. That does NOT mean you are giving up on Card. It means you are doing what is best for the team. It is possible CT is simply a gamer. It is possible Card just isn’t ready for prime time. Neither means that Sark’s choice from 20+ practices wasn’t the correct decision based on what he saw. It may simply be that what happens in practice isn’t translating to the games.

By starting CT this week (and letting Card play in Q3 just like the first game) we get to see a much more realistic competition between them. This is a decision not only for the rest of the year, but the next couple years. Getting more data points is the smart thing to do.
Great post - thank you.

Nice write up. Anwar's is good too with a rationale for playing Thompson.
I think we all got burned because we don't want to be cynical about our coach and team, but maybe that is on us.
You can't tell me that many of us didn't see this coming due to deficiencies we know exist (since we have been told on OB for months) and knowing how our players don't do well with success.
We just didn't want to see it happen, and hoped we were right to feel Sark is some savior.
Let's hope Sark can be humble enough to see that he needs to assess his decisions and his approach to the team. We have had to deal with coaches with too much ego for too long.

No. 3 - Discussing Kyle Flood ...

There are three things that I believe represent a bit of an early indictment on the coach that was supposed to be the answer of the offensive line problems that just won't go away.

1. The choice to stand with a pat hand throughout the off-season and not really make any effort to improve the starting options in the transfer portal was just a terrible decision and it's one that everyone that has followed the program closely knew was a terrible decision.

2. Flood's recruiting in the 2022 class hasn't been good enough at this point. There's still room to change this before the 2022 class puts pen to paper, but up until now, it hasn't been good enough.

3. There's not a single starter on the offensive line that I can tell with my naked eye has made progress from last year to this year, which is the single biggest indictment of all at this early stage of the season. The offensive line actually played pretty well in the final two games of the 2020 season with almost the same exact personnel that exists this year and the results from this group right now are borderline horrifying.

I'm not saying that Flood warrants being on the hot seat or anything like that, but we also can't ignore what has actually happened right now just because Flood came from Alabama, is making a ton of money and is Sarkisian's guy.

1. Do you have indisputable information that portal players who are verifiably better than what we have now would have signed if UT offered or pushed hard?

2. What exactly is he supposed to sell? You've said yourself the usual new coach bump just didnt happen here this time. Recruits are watching and waiting. Portal players didnt have that luxury rolling back to question #1

3. How much better do you expect these guys to realistically be in 8 months? Outside of Hayden Conner the majority are products of the Herb Hand era, one you know and Dunlap can prove was not working for quite some time. You point to the last two games of the season, both against awful football teams.

Kyle Flood gets the big bucks and he has to take the ire for this, but to realistically expect him to make chicken salad out of chicken shit is silly. Its been two games, are we are really already into the "Im not saying he warrants being on the hot seat" but laying the groundwork for why he should be fired phase?

Lets play a game. Assume Urban discovers the NFL is not for him. Sark goes 8-4 this season and 9-3 in 2022. December 2022 Urban calls Texas and says I want the job... What does Texas do?

Interesting question. How's his recruiting been and how bad was the Alabama loss in September 22?

What if he believes the right thing is to play Card because he thinks he's better?
All I can say to that is if he does stick with Card he better be willing to ride that horse into the ground. Sure, you can trot Card back out against Rice and he'll likely look fine. He may even be okay against Texas Tech. Then we'll have TCU and OU and if Card plays anything like he did against Arkansas that may absolutely splinter the program.

This is way bigger than how Sark is perceived for selecting Card as starter early on. Everyone gets that Card is a better 7 on 7 and practice QB. I think most people still believe Hudson may ultimately be the better QB. He's just not right now and especially not given our woeful offensive line situation.

What is best for the long term future of your program, Casey Thompson or Hudson Card. You are not going to improve the talent on this awful offensive line this year. Do you feel its better at this point to let Card grow into the QB we all think he can be and take his lumps growing up, or do you pacify your fickle fan base and send Thompson out to be in this spot again next spring or worse because Card bails out and your backups are Murphy and Charles Wright.

James had some shitty performances as a young player. So did VY. So has every quarterback that Texas has pretty much ever had outside of possibly Colt.
James Brown began his career by beating OU. James Street was brought in for Super Bill Bradley when we’d fallen behind and SBB wasn’t moving the team in their new offense called the Wishbone. Both started from then on and never let go. Street won a NC and Brown beat a heavily favored Nebraska team in the first Nig 12 Championship game. James Brown’s arm was never quite the same after his redshirt freshman season when Mackovic had him throw way too many passes in spring training. Brown’s arm was so weak after he used elastomer cords to exercise it rather than traditional strength training,
