Maybe I don't understand the term junkyard dog. Sam was tenacious and a team-first player. We was a mediocre quarterback and middling at best passer. He ran too often and too aggressively, resulting in more injuries than a one quarterback team can afford. However, he was never held to account for any of this by the Herman regime. Hence, he never had to face the football adversity of having his team and coaches lose faith in him. Card, on the other hand, faces precisely that, plus a loss of confidence in himself as a quarterback and as a leader. Enter the junkyard dog. If he has the dog in him, he will fight his ass off to regain his confidence and the faith of his team and coaches. That's an enormous ask of a suburban kid who's never faced that sort of adversity before in his short life. While I wish him the best and hope that he works and succeeds, I see no evidence in his past to suggest that he will do either.
