Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (About the other guy...)

One challenge with QBs that come from these great high school programs is that they played the vast majority of their games against broadly inferior teams/talent. Their O line dominated most games and their receivers got open a lot. Their running game was good, so the D had to stop both run and pass.

I'm guessing that Card's Arkansas game was likely his first experience behind an O line getting its ass kicked. And it didn't go well.

Ewers will have the same experience in game 2 this year if he is the starter. How will he handle it at 18 with zero college experience?
Probably not well actually.

What QB really does handle an Oline breakdown well so early in the process of reading defenses pre-snap? Certainly not Tom Brady.... Not even Mahomes, rarely at best.

Maybe Sark sees something I don't--imagine that-- because the Arkansas game alone is not a reason to give up on a QB.

Yeah back before I got big into snowboarding and winter sports, I only maybe followed a couple events, but now I love many of them. If you’re not a winter sports participant and many in Texas probably aren’t, then it probably affects your desire to watch them.
I don't have a mastery of the schedule of events, either. I dion't feel like it's been promoted well.

(Sell) If Texas was a baseball school, the majority of our content and discussion would be focused on it because the Orangebloods audience would demand it.

Ok, I'm not going to disagree with this point, but would like to inquire if you believe any school that fairly routinely (lets say at least twice a decade) gets a team to Omaha SHOULD be considered a "baseball school". Using this same criteria?

It's not a slight on the baseball team or program. It's just that the focus is significantly stronger on football.

Support for Texas baseball is super passionate. It's just not quite as massive.

His actions spoke volumes for months.
Again, this seems to be pure conjecture. His actions could have very well been interpreted as "I made a mistake in starting this kid in game 1; he's not quite ready for that yet; I'm going with the guy who gives us the better chance to win right now. "

He still continued to give Card opportunities late in the season. This probably resulted in the most embarrassing loss of his tenure. Had he not gone to with the dual QB approach in the Kansas game, Texas probably wins it.

We remember the circumstances of what happened last year quite differently.

I agree with that.

I was a freshman in 1976. Darrell Royal's last season as head coach. And that year Texas had its first non winning football season since the year before Darrell became the coach. Meanwhile, that following spring our baseball team got off to a pretty insane 34-0 record. I mentioned to one of my dad's best friends, a longtime Electrical Engineering professor, that I thought baseball was now the biggest sport at UT. He said "Nope. Its still football. By a mile."

And then we had the incredible 1977 football season where there were routinely massive parties on Guadalupe after every game from OU on. And an impromptu one on a Monday night in December right before finals when Earl Campbell won the Heisman Trophy. And I realized that Dr. Deusterhoeft was totally right and I've never forgotten that.

Sam faced adversity far worse than Hudson before he hit campus and he stood up pretty damn well as I recall.

And the reason he wasn't held to account was because he did a damn good job at what he was doing.

You applaud him for being tenacious and being a team first player yet you are calling him mediocre. That's a misnomer in terms.

And despite your opinion I'll tell you right now Sam would never have folded the way Hudson did. He might not have won that Arkansas game but he wouldn't have buckled in that way
This. Sam's second game as a starter was on the road against a blueblood that at the time was superior to Texas from a talent perspective. He could have easily had a melt down in that situation but instead he fought through some early struggles and eventually nearly pulled the victory out in OT.

Well Ketch you really seem to be talking in riddles here. Help me to understand the specific actions that Sark took that said "OK, that's it, I'm done with this kid. He'll never be my starter again." Not just generalities, but what were his public actions or statements that communicated this to you?

🤷‍♂️
Quick 1 person poll. Do you (or family) participate in any winter sports? This may be the difference. My family is big into winter sports (skiing, snowboarding, etc).

I'm a baseball fan. I've covered baseball as a beat here on OB at the very beginning of the site because I view it as important.

Measuring that level of importance is so difficult because the 20%of subscribers that really care... really, really care.

It's tough to completely justify a heavy financial investment when the payoff has previously had such limited upside. I'm not giving up hope that we can change that.

I don't have a mastery of the schedule of events, either. I dion't feel like it's been promoted well.
Agreed. It was very poorly promoted. I heard about Makayla Shifferin but I already knew about her, but I can't say I heard about anything or anyone else.

No. 9 - The List: Bradley Cooper Movies ...

Full disclosure: I have not yet seen either Licorice Pizza or Nightmare Alley from 2021.

The fact that both of those movies are on my to-do-list for the next week or two is one of the reasons I thought I'd do Cooper this week. I'm not sure if the majority of us have noticed, but this man has cranked out a number of performances in all-time movies in the last two decades.

And now I rank them.

View attachment 2185

10. Joy
9. The Place Behind the Pines
8. Limitless
7. Guardians of the Galaxy
6. American Sniper
5. American Hustle
4. Silver Linings Playbook
3. The Hangover
2. Wedding Crashers
1. A Star Is Born

I have a feeling both of these most recent movies might crack the top 10.

I like Cooper quite a bit...just re-watched American Hustle & The Place Beyond the Pines in the last week, but, the dude hasn't earned a Top 10 List. Just not enough leading man skins on the wall when I have to consider whether Midnight Meat Train deserves a spot.

I'm sure plenty of folks hated it because most are movie dumb, but, his bit part in Licorice Pizza was awesome...not near enough screen time for list consideration though.

Caught HBO running Nightmare Alley last night & DVR'd. I'm a big fan of Guilletrmo del Toro & it's running a 7.2 on IMDB so I'm expecting borderline greatness tonight...will report back.

I think a full set of context is needed to process exactly how things went down.

* When Card was named the starter, Sark went out of his way to build up Thompson in public than the guy he actually named as the starter. It makes sense to us because Sark was trying to keep Thompson from transferring, but behind the scenes there were questions about whether Thompson's response to Card getting the job warranted that kind of public endorsement.

* When Thompson took Card's job, Card never once did anything behind the scenes that would make needing Sark praising him in public a thing... so it never happened. AS soon as the Arkansas game happened, Card did not get the same public cover from his head coach that was given to Thompson only the week or two previously. It was noticed by those involved.

* Sark was pretty much going out of his way not to play Card, even when Thompson was really struggling after he suffered the injury against OU. Articles after article was written about Thompson's struggles, but really only being forced to play got Card back on the field.

* At the end of the year, he went out of his way not to compliment either quarterback. I really can't remember him ever praising Card during the season for his upside and potential, like you would with most players that are struggling to make it right away.

nope

(Sell) Expect? This team just went 5-7 and has question marks all over the place. I'm not here to tell you how you should set the expectations bar for the program, but to go from 5-7 to 12-1 in two seasons is the kind of massive leap that no Sarkisian-coached team has ever taken before with him as a head coach.
It's like last season did not happen. Wait until August rolls around and people say you're out of touch for not predicting a 10-win season.

I guess I need social media to promote it to my eyes and that hasn't happened.

I think he has 9 legit ones Top 10 movies right now. I struggled with No.10.

In regards to this, @Ketchum :

(Buy) I've probably interviewed 20 people in the last 7 months and roughly a half-dozen in the last week. I'm hoping to have our plans announced in the next few days after a few follow up conversations.

(Sell) If Texas was a baseball school, the majority of our content and discussion would be focused on it because the Orangebloods audience would demand it.

Is there really any school that is a baseball school? Where folks care more for baseball than basketball and football?
Maybe Rice? 🤷‍♂️

Here's the problem Card faces. Does he have good tools for a QB? Yes he does. But Ewers has better talent in every area except maybe scramble ability.

Well, that... and two head coaches, two coaching staffs and a team full of players.
And every one of those persons based their analysis on practice. We saw what the coaches and players said post-Arkansas. Card has not performed in games where anyone should have confidence in him moving forward. Could he take another step? Absolutely. Are Card's limitations just who he is? We shall see.

Card has various limitations that I am not sure get fixed. First, he cannot throw the long ball. He leaves points on the field every game with errant long throws. Second, and more importantly, he makes very slow decisions and refuses to take risks. This leads to a lot of standing in the pocket and then scampering with three guys chasing him. If Card has a clean pocket, he is good. Without it, he is a below average player.

I think back to Colt's RS freshman year, and remember the flashes of brilliance. We felt pretty good about him coming into 2007. Ehlinger showed who he was early in his career. Those are the best two QBs in the last 15 years. At some point, Card is who he is. For me, that time has come. For his sake, I hope I am wrong.

That's the part that I noticed and thought was really strange. Even if you think Card's not worthy of holding a football, don't you at least protect his emotions publicly? Give him something positive, even if you hate the guy and want him to transfer?

It was just so weird that Sark was never supportive of Card during the season, even if it was fake. I honestly don't get it.

Card will be a decent back up to QE or Murphy and a reliable spot starter due to injury. I don’t think much more here so I see him transferring to a smaller Texas school.

People often tune in because of the star athletes and stories and for teams likely to do something special. Who are they? I don’t know. Like you hear about individual summer games athletes all the time, even ones who aren’t American like Usain Bolt and you hear about teams like the gymnastics fab 5 (or 4), etc.

He's got two career starts on a bad football team under his belt.

It spoke volumes IMO. It also speaks volumes about how badly he wants a degree because it feels like he's got reasons to enter the Portal. He and his support team saw the same things. 9 out of 10 dudes are in the Portal. See Ewers, himself. Yet the kid is still here.
