Great discussion regarding Herman.
To my eyes, the point is simple. Herman certainly wasn't elite when he was hired by Texas and hasn't shown to be elite yet (only a few coaches are BTW). But Herman has flashed in certain aspects regarding program development and management and given that he had only been a head coach for 2 seasons when Texas hired him and was 41 years old, I believe it is safe to assume that he will improve his craft and evolve in a positive direction as he gains experience. Certainly, his recent hires seem to show that he learned to hire the best available to Texas and not just rely on what was sufficient to win at UH (because those are two different things).
Now I don't like Texas to be the school where a head coach gains experience, but it's almost impossible to hire a sure thing these days. IMO, the jury is out on Herman, and this year will tell most of the story. If Herman doesn't win the Big 12 (barring some weird extenuating circumstance) then I probably cross over to the side that believes he is not the long-term answer. But I like Koolaid and believe Herman will win the Big 12 this season, which won't conclusively prove he's elite but will be a good step in that direction.
