Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (It's weird, it's ironic... it's happening)

I'm going to show my inner nerd here, but they're "white walkers" or "others" in the books. Wights are something else - the undead that rise as basically dumb zombies, like the guy Jon Snow lit on fire at the wall when he tried to kill Mormont. The intelligent, super creepy ghost warrior people are white walkers, as in the color white (ice/snow). Nerd dissertation over.

PS - Really enjoyed the column this week. The preamble was great.
NERD!!!!

Thanks for the correction. My bad. Thought I was the one being a nerd.

I realize that GOT is quite popular on this site, but I'm damned if I understand why
those of us who couldn't care less are forced to wade through it in reading 10 Thoughts.
No relevance to UT sports, or any sports, at all. And no, I'm not forced to click on the thread,
and if it were solely devoted to GOT, I wouldn't. But I enjoy the rest of this weekly feature.
Flame away.
Agreed. A Dungeon and Dragons fantasy league has similar appeal to me. I dont want any Kardashian updates, any real housewives updates, or any other TV show updates not pertaining to Austin, UT, football, higher education, or sports.

I'd be surprised if Texas gave him a long look and came away very interested.
Johnson is my guy. Big time recruiter at USD. Got feet wet at Nevada proving he can win and lead a program. What he has done at UA this year is outstanding when everyone picked UA near the bottom of the PAC12. Hires very good assistants. His salary at UA and the lack of financial backing from that school should open a door for Texas if they are smart enough to look at Johnson.

Can you refresh me on the details? Thats an interesting sidenote I had missed somehow.
Interesting story.

He was a national top 100-150 level prospect that committed to Texas after transferring to Frenship.

When he moved to Frenship, their quarterback at the time was moved to an H-back position, a transition that eventually allowed this player to play on Sundays there.

The player?

David Thomas.

Briles was in the recruiting class with Huff and Ced Griffin in 2001. He would have had a chance to be a starter on the 2005 team or at least a major contributor. Got hurt and transferred to Houston.

This kind of info is why I subscribe! I have just melded your version into my version which is that Briles is a quitter at heart and afraid of competition.

Ketch,

Serious question - would you say your worldview has been adjusted somewhat by having a daughter? People rightfully feel outrage over the events at Baylor and you don't need to have a daughter for that, but I myself am particularly offended because of my family.

I have two little girls (4 and 3), and I would never send them to Baylor (at least not right now). I have to say that my attitudes about many things have changed -- gender stereotypes in the workplace, glass ceilings, equal pay, and so forth. These were abstract problems before, now they are things I think about a lot.

Probably slightly. I don't think you can have kids and not have that happen at least a little.

Briles was a hard hitter. One of those guys who could get his whole body involved in laying a lick on a ball carrier.

Are any of the current lineman possibly going to transfer with us adding one and possibly 2?

Those attrition lists are depressing. I remember how built Albert Hardy was and yet did he even ever play a down for us? I forgot the injury that he had. Recruiting has a lot of luck involved. You just never know who is going to make it and who isn't.
Hard
I believe I'm going to be at the beach on the weekend of the 9th.
If the beach is South Padre, pm me and I will give you some recommendations.

Kendal Briles was one of the best HS QBs I had ever seen at the time in person.

how many would you think leave? before camp?
I hate to make a prediction because some of these guys I've been thinking would leave for a while.

Some of these dudes are just going to ride it out, whether they ever play or not.

IMO Buechele will be better than '12 Ash because by all accounts Buechele lives, breathes and sleeps football. And he plays with a bit of red ass and fire. Simply never saw that from Ash. I also think Buechele has MUCH more explosive playmakers at his disposal and likely a better OL (relative perhaps but better nonetheless).

Is Game of Thrones what people watch while playing Dungeons and Dragons?

Hard to make assumptions with a guy that hasn't played yet.

I assume you mean it is hard for an objective, analytical person to make assumptions about a guy that has not played yet. There are thousands on this board who do not find it hard whatsoever to make such assumptions!!!

fair points. He just has to do it now.

I dunno. I've never played Dungeons and Dragons.

"What stands out nearly two years later about that day was that while I was in the middle of writing a column on why Strong had to dismiss both players from the program right away, Strong dropped the hammer by kicking both players to the curb before I could even post my column about him needing to do just that."

Awesome.

Respect.

Man I want Charlie Strong to have a great career at Texas.
