Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Let's Assume... dare I say... It's Cumbie)

If Cumbie comes here and Charlie gets the ax after next year can Cumbie go back to Ft. Worth ?

Somewhat surprised you didn't mention Tyrone Swoopes's impact in the game. I've been hyper critical of the kid since he was being recruited...and of course he wasn't elite, but I was beyond impressed at his toughness playing on one wheel and being in obvious pain the entire second half. Yet he kept putting his head down and fighting. Not to mention playing clean. That's the type of balls and leadership I like to see from the Texas QB. I don't anticipate saying these words many more times, but kudos to Swoopes. Outstanding effort and admirable performance.

Ketch , We'll have to see what Alex says later in the week, but based on what I saw , Andrew Billings totally dominated Doyle and did whatever he wanted to
I said he blocked him as well as you could "reasonably expect". Billings made three tackles and a sack on the on the day... I'd have taken that no questions asked coming into the game.

I'm in the camp that thinks Buechele should play some meaningful snaps just like Briles did this year with their freshmen QB. If you think about it, Heards improvement will probably be the #1 goal in the spring, while looking to see what Buechele, Merrick, and Locksley bring to the table. Swoopes should automatically be #5 on the depth chart from the start of spring practice. Buechele, from a talent standpoint, should be the #2 QB that we have.

Doesn't matter. People want accountability and regardless of Bedford being DC in name only, he has to own it, especially with his pay. Might be better for Charlie that he has no choice but to hire a great DC and have him focus on the rest of the team. Lord knows they need it.
I'm just not sure that's what Strong is eyeing.

If the offense comes out and looks good - innovative, sharp, utilizing talent - I think that buys Chsrlie a lot more time.

But so much is going to happen between now and then that I'm not sure it's worth speculating at this point.

@Ketchum

You didn't answer this one -
BUY or SELL: There are defensive coaching changes for 2016? A lot of talk about the offensive side of the ball, yet we hit a new low on the defensive side of the ball thisyear - seems this needs to be addressed
I thought I did in the opening section.

Great read Ketch...I have a follow up buy or sell:

B/S - If Cumbie (or literally any targeted OC) comes in and assembles his own staff, he will be the de facto head coach for offense, and CS will be the Head coach for defense and the front man of this band?

Meaning there will be very little involvement by Strong once the OC hire is made, he will get his staff, recruit his players and call is plays?
I think that is the hope and expectation.

In my opinion Strong needs to scratch his defense and hire someone who can stop the spread. This isn't the Big East or power running SEC. That 3-3-5 is crap.

Alabama at #1 because of their resume or because you think they look the best on their best day?

Alabama's signature win is over ________.
Alabama because I believe it is the best team and have for much of the season.

You GREATLY underestimate Coker. I have watched them all year and he is a great game manager in getting Bama in the right assignments and getting the ball in the hands of the playmakers at the proper time. And, that is just not handing off to Henry.

Oh he closed em. Heading back now bro.

I had something more like this in mind.....

With Gary Patterson replacing Pufnstuf.

What an interesting dynamic that will be, given the super intense scrutiny the entire program will be under. Ironically, Strong has to get rid of the people he trusts most when he's in the toughest situation.

He was a good bus driver on Saturday. As I mentioned on Saturday, his ability to not turn the ball over was probably his greatest skill, although he completed a few critical passes and gave the team some juice in the running game.

He needs to continue to be a situational player moving forward.

In a bad year for SEC quarterbacks, he ranks... what... fifth or sixth?

Sir Paul McCartney and 'Live and Let Die' would like to talk to both of you.
That's my joint. I used the word "perhaps" when making the claim. It being an Oscar winner gives it a major skin on the wall in the discussion.

I think that's what you would call "simple progress." Charlie will have to be in contention for the big 12 title come the last week of the season to save his job imho.
5 to 8 would be good progress. I think we havea chance at 8. ND at home, Cal without Goff.

Certainly not insinuating anything differently. Just came away impressed with his toughness more than anything. I've always thought the kid was soft. Yesterday he wasn't.
I've always felt like the soft tag was greatly overplayed with the kid. Even against TCU when people thought he was scared, he was out there throwing his body around because he cares.

Please explain how 5 or 6 wins constitutes "good progress" in year 3 of a rebuild?
I mean going from 5 to 8 wins. Hell, I don't think Charlie is Texas good, but eventually, he could be an 8-9 win a year coach here. Not up to my standards, but my opinion doesn't really count.

Well he wasn't situational yesterday. And with zero to play for other than the guys around him, I sat in that stadium impressed. Although not as impressed as I was with Baylor coeds and just about every other female wearing green. Geezus!

...eight wins at a minimum and if there are blowout losses or a 2-3 start to the season, it'll probably be a death blow.
If that's the case then I'd say Belmont and the BMDs probably ought to get cracking on interviewing names on the replacement list.
