Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Losing the battle, but winning the war?)

Alabama is a poor example of canceling tough out of conf games. Alabama losing to a team that went 2-6 and another that went 3-5 in conf is the ultimate reason they were left out. They lost 3 games and only one of those losses was to a quality team. Doesn’t deserve to be in playoff.

@Ketchum I can't believe you never mentioned our Off Tackles in your section on the portal. We have two rookie OTs with 3 guys named Joe and a Freshman at OT. What if one of the starters gets hurt? Are either one of the reserves ready to start at center? I would be looking for a starter in the middle. Like I heard Sark say today these games are won in the trenches.
I think the tackles will be ok, but if you can find one, I'm for that, too.

No, they don't. But, that doesn't change the lesson. See SMU's resume.

I agree with you on the whole with Ewers, he’s gotta be better for Texas to win it all. And that’s probably all that really matters. Although, I thought this biggest problem yesterday was Sark’s play calling, it was really poor at times in my opinion. Also had a dropped TD, along with some other key drops that would’ve helped extend drives. The QB rating is what it is, it’s a data point for sure, but I think it lacks some context particularly for yesterday. The result is the result, but I think he played better than that number shows and it was more of a reflection on the factors around him. Great column!

If players enter the portal Monday are they immediately removed from the roster going forward?

Sark wad not good all day, but he's worse in the red zones. That was supposed to be the area they worked to improve all season and it's been the worst area of the team lately.

The King

Have you seen this on Netflix? I revisited it this weekend and it's really good. If you like period dramas, I think you should give it a watch. Chalamet is great in it.
This is an excellent movie

I don't hate Quinn. I think he's the 3rd best UT quarterback of the modern era.

He has to play better. There is no bigger story that the starting quarterback being in a 2 month slump.
I think his game between the 30’s over the last two have been good to great, inside the 20’s, not so much.

Great write up Ketch. God this loss really stings and I feel like it will for a while. The game was there for the taking and the team just let it slip through their hands. They freakin had it. I’ve been all in with you on Quinn’s performance this past year. It’s simply just not good enough, Sarks play calling has to be better, the OL needs to be better, but at the end of the day the ball is in Quinn’s hands and he’s the one distributing it. I’m just not confident enough in him to believe we will make a championship run, and that’s a shame because this is an all time great defense. I appreciate Quinn for what he is and what he has done to restore Texas to national prominence but we need a quarterback to take us to the mountain top.

Maybe instead of counting to point out where QE is weak, try to help with ideas on how we can take advantage of his strengths and stay away from his weaknesses.

Build off of specifically what should happen with this following. Examples:

Sark play calling.
OLine protection schemes.
Run game strategies.
Short, quick route passing.
Pushing the pace of play on offense.

At this point in the season, I feel it’s a waste of time and hurts the team morale by continually talking about QE’s up and down numbers. Results in too many fans talking shite about Arch is what is needed.

The focus should be on what can we do to win games, show more consistency and improve at the WR, RB and OLine positions.

Let’s show our expertise in the game of football with new ideas and lines of communication.
The answer is very simple. Give Arch a lot more snaps in the red zone, especially in the second half.

Let the game go. Bigger games await.

Quinn is getting healthier and you can see it in his throws. He couldn’t physically make a lot of throws until the Kentucky game. He was a positive in this game. Sark was stubborn with the run and put Quinn and so many 3rd and long. No running game makes it so tough on an QB. Also when the script runs out, Sark struggles play calling. Elite play designer and script writer. After that (most second halves), we lose look a bit lost. I agree with a different poster who thinks we need an OC. Let Sark design and script and someone else call it.

@Ketchum can you explain why you’re using alabama being left out as a reason to cancel big time non conference games? Alabama’s 3 losses were to teams in their own conference, 2 of them being to 6 loss programs… including the worst ou team of my lifetime. It’s not like they got beat by some big time out of conference program. I’m sorry you don’t get to get drug by ou by 21, get manhandled by vandy, and have another loss and get in the playoffs.

Is he? I still don't think he can step into that right foot and it's causing him to float balls that he normally throws on a line (see his first INT).

It's more about the inclusion of SMU than the exclusion of Bama. They have zero quality wins. They are in because they played fewer tough games. Strength of schedule was meaningless. Having a weak schedule gets you in. There is no real punishment for going as weak as possible.

It was staggering watching the offense operate between the 20s vs in the red zone. So many of the play calls were baffling. Still can’t get over that pump screen to one side with a RB screen attached to it on the other side that almost caused a Quinn fumble in the last 30 seconds. That misdirection shit wasn’t working all night and he just kept doing it and putting them behind the chains. It’s the first game in a while where I’ve particularly felt Sark’s play calling was really poor. 2022 TCU game is the last one that really stands out, I was in the building for that one it sucked lol

Im not sure why Sark thought that play was gonna have enough time to develop and/or get UGA’s defense to bite

Sark's insistence on sticking with Quinn no matter what.....

I agree and understand that what you’re saying from a quality of wins perspective. But if we’re being honest Texas doesn’t have a great quality win either (I’d argue both Michigan & Aggy were good wins for different reasons but I won’t count them bc they aren’t currently in the top 25) and I’m of the belief they’re the 3rd best team in the country and could win the whole thing. I’m just of the belief that the committee would look at things differently if say those losses were to Tenn, Ohio state, and some other team better than vandy. SOS should matter but it goes away in a heartbeat with 2 or more bad losses in my opinion.

Doesn’t help either with no run game yesterday.
