Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (One more quarterback column)

You, of course. It's you and the rest of the staffs fault the team has sucked for the last 6 years. If you'd just make them good again, everything would be rainbows and puppies.
Sadly, you've never been a member of the site (if your sign-up date is correct) when Texas has had a good team. Like really good.

I personally apologize for that.

Yeah, but I've been here long enough to get a feel for how it would have been. Outside of 2005, I'm sure there would be melt downs over nearly every red river shootout, calls for macks job, personal insults at VY, and Colt, Jamaal Charles being called greedy and selfish and disloyal for leaving early, wishing death or worse on Blake Gideon...There's always something to knit pick.

Because as it relates to this year, it's needed desperately.

That's not my point. I asked whether you expected Texas to find, or have one before camp? If jot, how can it be the most disappointing thing of the camp when we had no players who were good enough to achieve that level of play? Again, that's like saying the worst part of camp was no QB turned into a Heisman contender by the end. Why would you expect Boyette, Poona, or Nelson to turn into an elite D lineman out of the blue in camp? How was that even realistic?

Wasn't necessarily speaking of starting against ND; however, unless Swoopes comes out on fire and doesn't look back, then why continue to waste valuable experience on a Sr when the Fr can get it? Didn't Strong say if a Sr and lower-classmen are on par they go with the youth? I hope like hell all of us gets a huge dose of 'put that in your pipe and smoke it' when it comes to Swoopes' play this year because I'd love for the young man to go out in style; however, if he's still JAG, then I believe the torch needs to be passed. I also wonder, if both are going to get significant playing time during games, how do they expect them to get into rhythms? The 2 QB system hasn't worked well for most who have tried, and can't see it being a plus for us this year.
I suspect we will see two quarterbacks against Notre Dame and UTEP for sure, after which we may see Ty primarily in an advanced 18 wheeler package. Of course, that's still two a two quarterback system, but most OBs would be satisfied with that. Furthermore, I really don't want to see 190# Shane doing a lot of the QB runs in this offense out of fear he will miss the season completely. Stidham was 6'3 210# and couldn't take the pounding, and I still have nightmares about Colt as a 195# RS Fr trying a QB sneak against KSU and then being a wounded warrior and easy pickings for the Aggies.

Look, we all want the next great QB, and have since the 2009 title game. Garrett Gilbert, with very few reps throughout the season, brought us back in that game, in spite of the coaches going ultra-conservative, and we had a chance to take the lead. So after the game the talk turned to what we had seen of GG, and the limited body of evidence led to predictions like "the offense is in good hands for the next three years" and "I think he will out-do Colt - he's bigger, has a stronger arm, and is very accurate". We knew far more about GG at that point than we do about SB now, spring scrimmage for 1 half not withstanding, so I'm holding off on the anointment until I've seen a bit more.

Of course, Mack's decision to turn the top spread QB in the country and a roster comprised of players recruited to play in a spread into Alabama led to total disaster and his demise, while this offense is tailor-made for Shane (except the QB runs), so I am very, very hopeful about the future with Shane, Matthew, and Sam. But right now? Whatever Sterlin says.

Regarding Romo - I'm with you. Not a Cowboy fan but I do like and respect what Romo has done for a franchise that frankly has failed to put a good team around him most years (thanks Jerrah).

My immediate thought on seeing that play was that Dak and Zeke are the future of the franchise (sort of like Troy and Emmitt were, long ago) and despite the growing pains that it will involve, Dallas would be well served to start the youth movement soon rather than have Tony ruin his health for another mediocre season or three.

I agreed with all of the above. Time to turn the page.

Until the games start, anyway.;)
Maybe, but @Ketchum, I have a hectic year coming, a 9 year old, a 13 month old and I'm starting a new Interventional Ortho and Sports Medicine practice. I just need to be a fan this year. I've paid my Foundation money, spending time at UT Golf Club is a destressor. I'm just waiting for Ehlinger to be our guy anyway.

In that case, I hear ya. Big-time.

pool fans gonna pool....
Last four weeks.

Dominated Barcelona.
Mostly dominated Arsenal.
Mostly dominated Burnley (inexplicably took the L)
Mostly outclassed Tottenham.

None of those games were at home.

I'm not making it up.

hey, it would be nice to write about a good team for a change. Am I the bummer or is Texas football the bummer?
OB needs to adapt. Horns are exciting because of their potential. Not in spite of it. OB tends to act like something was taken from them.

Creative writing.... pfffffff lulz
saved your first post for that, huh?

It's called reporting. I'm not in the hype game or the pretending business. It's a team with major question marks coming off a ragtag season.

We're not the ones that need adapting. We're national champs in our industry.

I took at as him addressing the masses on OB's not the mods. Perhaps my take was off?

I thought it was a critique of us, specifically. If not, my bad.
Ehh, not sure. Anyway good write up. The truth about where this program is right now is depressing. I'm not sure what the answers are. I hope it's Charlie because I do like him. This year is so important not only for him but the program as a whole. If we start 1-5 it will be UGLY and that is a real possibility. I really hope we are able to move the ball on the ground while the QB situation sorts itself out. Oh well, there's always something else to turn my attention and money to. The fall is a nice time to volunteer for charitable work. They get a little short handed during football season.

Obviously QB play gives teams the edge to compete for titles, but consistent depth and maturity along the LOS is how programs stay consistently good. That's how teams manage 9-3 in their bad years. You can't count on having Joe Montana at the helm year in and year out, but you can build a team that's pretty tough even if the QB isn't great.
I totally agree,Alabama is testament to the fact that you just need an adequate q-back if the other positions are strong

Alabama is the extreme exception. Ain't nobody else pulling it off.

I hate to say it, but so is OU. When their QB sucks, they're still 9-3. When their QB is pretty good, they're a top ten team.

A year ago weren't we all ready for the Heard era to begin? Why were they keeping this guy off the field? Then he played against Cal and OU and we all sang to the heavens for the answer to our prayers. Then every other game including ISU happened.

Perhaps the answer isn't "anything but Swoopes" and maybe a healthy dose of QB combo is what Buechele will need to give him more time to grow, mentally and physically. Perhaps we pay 2 dudes over $6m a year to know that and we have to trust them on it.

BTW, I don't expect this to be a popular post :)

No. 9 – Eternal Randomness of the Spotty Sports Mind …

… I have to be feeling pretty good if I’m a Houston Texans fan after that destruction of the Cardinals on Sunday. I can’t wait to see what Brock Osweiler has up his sleeves.

… Hello, Melvin Gordon! You’re becoming a more tasty fantasy option by the second.

… So, where does Dak Prescott go in a 17-round keeper league? He could be an interesting guy to take a flyer on late.

... I believe in the Rally Mantis in Kansas City.

… Nice job, New York Little League baseball. Way to bring it home.

… Paige Van Zant landed one of the top knockouts of the year in the UFC this weekend.

… Man City is having the same start to its season this year that it had a year ago, a year when I was taught just how long the EPL seasons are. There’s no reason to overreact to anything after three games. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

… If I’m Manchester United, Marcus Rashford has to be on the pitch every game. Let’s not make this rocket science, Jose.

Hate to break it to you Ketch, but last year City wasn't being managed by Pep. Welcome to the new world order in the EPL.

You guys are great, objective, and smart. I'm an old whose positive outlook on all things burnt orange can really be annoying, especially to my wife and kids. Ketch, I know you love what you do and it's hard covering this football team sometimes. Hook 'em. and God Bless Texas.
