Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Shaka is a damn good coach)

I think it's quite dangerous to believe that the volume of those responding in the thread represent the same percentages of those that don't post online.
Whatever you need to tell yourself...

It'll be hard. Basically, that stretch is an anomaly in the discussion of the story of the program.

I know this... no Texas team has ever had a better run than the one Shaka had and no coach ever did a better job in the Tournament than he did in 2011.
And in 2018 we’re left hoping Smart can rally to avoid doing something no Texas coach has done since Bob Weltlich.

How on earth did they luck into those six group one RPI team wins?

I have not once contended that they lucked into anything. I am merely asking, what can you point to that makes him a great coach? I am not hung up on wins and losses. If we would like to focus purely on wins and losses at UT, the conversation will be very lopsided on why he is NOT a very good coach.

Also do note I am not calling this guy a bum. A person does not reach the level of coaching he has reached by being a bum. That being said a VERY good coach was let go in the hopes of hiring a great coach. What about his X's and O's lead you to believe he is not just a "good" coach. When you assemble a group of very talented players, they will play to their potential and beat some good teams. The role of a great coach is instill systems that help those same players to win, even when they are not playing to their potential. Can you honestly say Shaka has those systems and if so, what are they?

Lets just start with, could you please describe Shaka's offensive philosophy and why it is best for the talent he has assembled?

You'd sweat all over me. No thanks.

I was wrong it was Davis and Kidd-gilchrest. They were the best players on the team and “on vacation” move the goal posts some more. I’m not saying we should win it all by a long shot but making the damn tourney last season and this year should’ve been given with 1 top 10 national player. FYI that would be the expectation every else. I mean if you care about winning that is
Moving the goalposts? I said last year was unacceptable. That team also had Terrance Jones pretty nice college player. You’re saying having just because you have 1 top 10 national player you should make the tourney. The last two No.1 picks didn’t make the tourney.
Simmons didn’t play half the season due to not attending class he was actually on vacation. Fultz was at UW with literally no one else. Are we at the level of UW and LSU? Is that the expectation? Again doesn’t jive with we are Texas.

Neither of those teams had back-to-back top 6 recruiting classes, multiple of McDonald's All-Americans on their roster and a top 12 paid coach.

You’re asking Ketch to articulate what Shaka can’t either.

He worked the back channels at Texas to build up momentum the idea that he was going to be on the staff. He tried to will the move to happen.

Brew is a master at gorilla marketing himself.

Gorilla marketing? If you say so...

We are Washington!

Ok moving the goalposts. I’d have to go look at the rankings, but Washington might have had back to back top 6 classes Romar was recruiting at a high rate at UW.

I'm actually educated on those types of things as a 20-year webmaster, but yeah, whatever I need to tell myself.
Your opinion of yourself is quite remarkable, that's for sure. Based on all your years of experience, why is that you are the only one on your staff that ever generates this type of reaction from your subscribers and the only one who feels the need for non-stop condescension?

Whatever, that's the kind of pat on the head you actually give to people. That should be your gif when you're arguing on behalf of Shaka from now on.
You can't even just accept a self deprecating comment without going sideways with it.

This is so weird because I find you to be a normally fair person.

I didn't bring that gif out, and I'm kidding! I am going to bed though because this USA-Finland game is basically over. Have enjoyed the banter in this thread fwiw.

Well Ketch, you are entertaining. In your humble opinion, what do you think Shaka will do with the program if he’s given say...3 to 4 more years.

I don't know. He hasn't proven himself yet at this level.

Damn good isn't good enough at Texas.

Night dude. One last thing though, Shaka Smart is not a damn good coach. He was a piece of a small-college machine and didn't build it nor break it. He's in a bigger program now, and he's not building it or breaking it. He's average in every way. Good night.
Just for the record, calling someone a damn good coach isn't the height of hyperbole.

It should be the baseline at this level.

Sleep well,my friend.

I literally changed the sports media industry in this town.
Therefore every opinion you have the next 20 years must be correct? I'm trying to see how that is at all relevant to this. It's not as if I'm arguing that you have not created a great thing...just that your opinions suck from time to time and your behavior towards others on the site is downright disgraceful as a business owner, moderator, etc. The fact that you don't see this and understand it is really quite remarkable and a testament to the blinders that you have on at all times.
