Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (The ice is as thin as it gets)

I have to admit, I thought there would be a few thoughts and questions on my OSU story from 19 years ago.

I'm getting to be an old.
I'm an old, not you. I would have responded and told a few stories about that sorry point in time, but I'm too raw from the current sorry situation to willingly revisit that sorry situation. Like now, we had beating Nebraska juxtaposed with rout 66-type beatings. Absent the last SWC and first Big 12 championships, of course.
Were you on the field at home games? My son was a sports editor for The Cactus so he had field passes for himself and a photographer, a role I willingly filled as needed. There were games...

is Mackovic in the room with you?

No spin from me. Those are facts and I loved those years. The 95 aggy win was one of my all timers.

And yes, his 6 year tenure had more success than Charlie has had in 2.33 years. And Mackovic's 2.33 record was similar to Charlie's. Those are also facts.

I guess I'm missing the point.
The point is that Charlie will be the worst coach in school history.

Really enjoyed that. A really weird thought I had. It's almost like Charlie didn't talk to a single person that really knew anything when he took this job. Or maybe they all said, just trust your instincts....which is horrible advice because his instincts are the poop. When fans have been way more ahead of the curve in what's happening with the program than the coach for nearly three years, you're getting fired. I mean, I feel like there's a large group that has accurately predicted most of Charlie's tenure and not out of dislike for the guy. I've been pretty well right since he was hired and I really like the man. It sucks watching someone you like and have invested in get the shit kicked out of them when they should have seen it coming and you can't do anything about it.

Thanks for conceding that it might not be a fair comparison due to length of tenure, and if CS is fired, then statistical, he will certainly be the worst coach in UT history.

I'm not arguing, I'm sincerely asking your opinion though. If he does:
1)Rally to win 7 or 8
2)Keep his job
3)Continue his recruiting success
does the table not set up for him to have the same 1995 and 1996 success that Mackovic had?

And it's not THAT unlikely for him to accomplish those 3 things given our remaining schedule.

Texas plays OU, Baylor, Tcu, Tech still to come. All likely will light up a defense that's shown no improvement this year and charlie got nothing out of with two weeks to prepare for OSU. This team is going to win multiple games in a row?

Well when you put it like that... :(

I have never had the sense that Charlie listens to anyone. He wings it.

He'll need to go 6-2 in his final 8, at least.

So you're saying there's a chance...

Just to clarify, I think he's a terrible game day coach. But there is plenty to like; his ethics, his recruiting, his mock turtleneck.

I feel like we're a D coordinator hire and 1 year away from being back to where we belong. If he solved the D coordinator issue as well as he did the O coordinator issue, then that's better than burning this thing down and starting over with an unknown.

It's easy to speculate that we're a Tom Herman away from greatness but wasn't Charlie Strong the Todd Herman of 2013? I just don't think HC hires are as simple as make them out to be.

How many coaches did ND or Alabama or Michigan roll through before they got back on track? That's probably worthy of a full thread of it's own though.

He's looking for a case card on the river, but he ain't buried yet.

How I wish this were true. The offseason was so much more fun.

No. 8 – The end is near in College Station…

For a while Kevin Sumlin couldn’t control his players. Now, he can’t control his assistant coaches.

Along with the significant lack of control as CEO of the Aggie football program, he can’t win enough games to keep himself off of the hot seat list.

That’s going to end in a few months when he loses his job the way his offensive line coach Jim Turner should have lost his job in the aftermath of one of the most ridiculous cluster-you-know-whats we’ve seen at the college level in a long time. That Turner has his job says a lot about the desperation Sumlin must be feeling going into this season.

Sumlin is out of moves on the chess board at this point. All that’s left at this point is for the season to unfold the way its expected to unfold. Johnny Manziel ain’t walking through that door for Sumlin and I’m not sure it would matter if he did.

I might be off by a year.

Think the team will be wildly inconsistent just like last year. New offense should prevent large blow outs. Defense will come to play in maybe 3 of the remaining 8 games. There is just not week to week strong effort only sporadic.

"
BUY or SELL: If Geoff Ketchum was Athletic Director of the University of Texas, he would fire Charlie Strong today?

(Sell) That would create a disaster for 2017 recruiting. The worst thing that could happen for the Longhorns is for the assistant coaches to stop caring about recruiting in the name of setting up next year’s job. You can’t have commitments and key targets hanging out in limbo for a couple of months. What Texas needs more than anything else is for the current staff to coach for the school as fully committed as possible and then the change in coaches needs to happen as quickly and as seamlessly as possible once the season concludes."

Wait, what? If the recruits know that Charlie is likely going to be fired, what difference does it make if it happens now or at the end of the season?

I believe it was Charlie.
OMG! I love Charlie but man, with all the miscues on accepting or not accepting penalties and twice getting flagged for this....he just doesn't seem to have in-game awareness. I'm sad about it bc I love the guy. Smh
