Texas Recruiting

Sark plays the long game. Much different than Mack.

And Sark recruits the LOS unlike Strong and Herman.

Also, Sark trusts the portal as well.

No reason to panic
Why do people always say stuff like that when the recruiting class is rated lower than what is typical? Not just you, I notice this in pretty much every fan base. You still want the best players, you need to get as many of them as possible because not everyone pans out. those who are rated higher in the rankings tend to have a higher success rate of developing into difference makers.

He may play the long game but he also recruits top players every cycle, that's his MO. His 24 class was #6. His 23 class was ranked #3. His 22 class was #5. So clearly he does go after the best players and gets most of them. I know signing day is over 4 months away but being out of the top 10 in recruiting, even on July 27, that's not intentional. He's still going after all the big fish that all the other big time programs are going after. It seems that he's not landing them at the same level as in previous classes.

And that's why it's weird seeing them at 13th today instead of say 4th or 5th where they seem to always be.

Hey in 2021 we were ranked only 16th and everybody was up in arms. Most of the great players went out of state that year especially Alabama.

But hey look how it turned out the guys that stayed played great. I trust our coaches.
Yes it was a fine year but the margins are slim. The games against tcu, ksu and houston all came down to the final minutes or seconds, and we could have been looking at last season in a completely different way.

While I agree with you, I seem to remember that Mack would, for example, tell 3 running backs there is only one offer - whoever accepts first gets it. And missed out on getting some of the truly top recruits by closing out early. No idea if this is true, but I read it many times.

Well, buddy, this same freak out mode was happening last summer as well. I don’t know what else to tell ya?

I mean Texas seems to have to settle for the #2 WR instead of the #1. The ****ing horror.

Furthermore, the last two cycles Sark has flipped some big time guys.

I’m sure Texas will finish Top 6 yet again

Times are changing. With the advent of NIL, you've got tons of flips at the last second. It's a bidding war now. An arms race. If you're still recruiting like you did under Mack Brown, you've lost. The rules are being written daily.
There's a book out there called "The Guns of August"

It's about the lead up to WWI and goes meticulously through how it came about. But the underlying current is this- in the run up to the war, military strategists planned how they would attack, defend and win the conflict as quickly as it started. The problem was, they were basing their assumptions of how the war would progress, based on what happened in the PREVIOUS wars they had fought.
The rules had changed. The strategies and technology had changed. And those mistakes they made early in the war (1914) ultimately led them into a bloody stand still and a war of attrition.
The moral of the story was-- "you can't fight the new war with the old tactics and expectations".

Welcome to recruiting in 2024-- the new war.

It always comes down to attrition unless it's the US vs 7th century Ottomans... The toughest citizenry wins. What does that say for all our gay and trans softies everywhere.

You cant depend on last minute flips, it's not sustainable. The only thing that is sustainable is how and what you recruit out of high school, and we all should know that's the best way to build a culture in a program, because a team full of mercs isnt it. This is why sarkisian goes after and gets enough top players to get top 10 classes. until the 2025 class at least.

But i highly doubt his class being where it is at now is an intentional thing. I see who he's offering, he wants their commitment.

He whiffed on so many good players. but his resume speaks for itself. and now he's one of only 2 national championship coaches still active

While I do agree that signing highly rated recruits is necessary (today), and having a strong culture is is critical, I do believe that you may be looking in the rear view mirror.
With the advent of NIL, coupled with the ability to transfer with no penalties, the old ways of doing business (roster managent) may no longer be applicable. I believe the mercenary behavior we are seeing will only increase with good players riding the pine leaving for not only playing time, but also NIL dollars. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see the top programs, like Texas, relying more heavily on the transfer portal in the near future, while allowing the lesser programs to deveop the high school recruits and essentially acting as a farm system.

There will be a season (mark my words) where the bulk of a schools starting roster will be transfers. They may not win it all, but they'll play in the title game.
