I'm so conflicted about a coaching change and here's why:

I want Texas to be elite again. That is my stated goal. So obviously you'd think we have to fire Strong for that to happen. But firing Strong doesn't make Texas elite. Hiring an elite coach makes Texas elite. Who the hell is Texas going to hire?

The default knee jerk answer all year has been Tom Herman. Is Herman elite? No. Could he be elite some day down the road with Texas' resources? Maybe. But it clearly ain't the no-brainer everyone dreamed it was.

So if not Herman, then who could Texas get that would make us elite? Is an elite coach coming to Texas knowing he's going to have a new AD next year? Will we get an elite AD if he knows he won't be able to hire his own football coach?

Maybe we'd be better off keeping Strong one more year, getting an elite AD in place and then seeing who emerges as a Harbaugh/Meyer/Saban type candidate next year.

But if we fire Strong, hire Herman (if Herman doesn't go to USC or LSU) then I'm worried we may just be starting this same cycle over again because whoever we hire is going to come with another $5m per/5yr contract.

I'm no longer a Strong apologist. Barring some miracle, he will not be an elite FBS coach. But our goal shouldn't be to fire Strong so we don't bang our heads against the door every time he fails to correctly call a timeout or we get a kick blocked.

The conflicted part comes if LSU hires Herman and he wins a national championship with them.

BTW, the timing of this whole thing sucks because Fenves didn't hire an AD six months ago and isn't planning on hiring one now. So if we start next season with a coach you don't like, don't hate Strong for that. Fenves made this problem, and he's done nothing to fix it.

That's the problem with this administration. First 8-4 was the benchmark. Two weeks ago we hear that 7-5 is the metric. We all should be prepared for 6-6 and for CS to return. "We just have to compete. We really are close. I told em we just..." Fenves and Perrin will eat it up. Partly because they don't want to eat the money for the coaches. Partly because it will look bad. But the main reason is they don't have a plan.

Texas will keep Perrin and Strong. Texas will wonder aimlessly through the spring and summer and then the issues will reappear next fall and we will all suffer because the University of Texas simply isn't committed to winning.

Spot on. Our lack of leadership at the very top is crippling the football program for YEARS to come.

I'm not bashing Colt in anyway, other than to say he did turn the ball over alot in 2007. As for the line? I don't recall, but didn't Jamaal Charles rush for 1600 yards or something? They probably were ok.

Remember when slipping a receiver on the field from the sideline used to be a trick play? Now it's illegal as it should be. It isn't football.

If I'm coaching a team, especially one playing the Steelers, I'm telling my defense to absolutely tee-off on the other team if they are running a spike play. The defense lays off out of professional courtesy, much like a kneel down play, when a team spikes the ball. To fake a spike is classless.

I've never been a fan of that rapist QB, but he just rised above Richard Sherman on my very short list of guys who deserve a season ending injury. F him.

Coach Smart is entitled to his opinions...just like anyone else. And like everyone else that publicly states an opinion, they open themselves up to other's opinions on his opinions. That's just the way it is...and should be.

Of course he's entitled to his opinions. But that doesn't mean putting them out for public record when your job is coaching basketball and representing a huge state school is a good idea.

This is one of those times that the smart play is to say nothing. Saying nothing wouldn't have pissed anyone off and something something pissed half the country off.

That said, I still watch Samuel Jackson movies and I'll still cheer for Longhorn basketball because their political opinions are about as relevant to me as my neighbor's (if you knew Chad that would be a bigger statement. But Chad is a dipshit.)

Bottom line...we weren't supposed to do ANYTHING this year. Not with all the underclassmen playing on both sides of the ball and a true freshman QB. Period. Acting like this was supposed to be a Big XII championship team is just dumb. Who cares about the record as long as PROGRESS is being shown. Next year Texas should be ready to compete.

The expectations were unreasonably reset after the ND game.

Wait a second. Isn't that exactly what Shaka is doing with his "slap in the face" comments? He's not tolerating other views which is what put us in a situation where half the country is split, as you say. What if Rick Barnes made the same comments when Obama was elected or God forbid, if Hillary was elected? Would you honestly still feel the same? If not, there's a very specific word for that kind of dichotomy.

I like Shaka, but IMO the slap in the face comments were classless, wrong, and completely disrespectful to the democratic process and should have never been said, especially in such a public way. If you really feel the way you do with your above statement, then how in the world can you not condemn those comments as the walking, talking definition of divisive rhetoric?

I thought he was going to be a great QB after the rout of Ole Miss (ok, they weren't that good at that time) in which he was terrific, and then the clutch last minute drive a couple of weeks later to beat Ok State.

For instance, instead of visiting with various schools in the offense to talk defense, could a coach spend that time with someone like … I dunno … Mack Brown … and make efforts to learn things like the importance of time outs, clock management and when to accept penalties or decline them?

Again, I’m asking for a friend.

This is the issue that scare me the most. If Strong returns in 2017, he may win 9 in the regular season with a junior dominated class but Strong teams will always have a hard time winning consistently against good teams. You simply can't make on-field decisions like this staff and beat nationally ranked teams unless you overwhelm them with talent.
