Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend ("Charlie's guys" have taken over)

It's his third year. It's time for Charlie to fly.

Not to mention the fact that the seniors will occupy few starting spots. On offense you likely only have Perkins and Bluiett (assuming he stays at TE). On D maybe 2-3.

Can't speak for others, I pretty much paid little attention to it because I just don't see that happening.

Pretty much this. I think the odds of Sterlin Gilbert rolling with Swoopes are slim to none. It'll be Charlie's last year if he does.

They both played for Texas, love them both. I just like Major more because he did more with less. I like overachievers.

That's all.

As to who was the better quarterback, well unfortunately its a close call.

I love them both too. Matter of fact, based on all the Major bashing that goes on around here about his coaching (which I VICIOUSLY disagree with), I find the wave of support for his time as a player pretty laughable. He's a Horn, I find any baseless bashing of our guys completely stupid.

Lots of good stuff in there...
-On #2: As an OG of this line of thinking, I'll allow you to get on the bus.
-On Ehlinger, I was having very similar thoughts in the Ehlinger thread last week and sometimes I think the minds at entities like rivals sometimes don't see the forest for the trees....they get caught up in details and forget we are looking for football players here and the kid can play football at the highest level at the toughest position. You can't dominate them all against every team. Ask Cam. In fact Westlake was kind of the Carolina Panthers of Texas High School Football this year.
-Interesting that you include Porter on the list of those who will play. You see a special package for him, because there's lots of traffic ahead of him?
-IMO, with Texas women's basketball they just don't know what they don't know. This will be the year they figure out there's a difference between very good and great. They also need a little more talent at a couple positions and then watch out.
-Cam is who I thought he was in all regards. Lol.
-Speaking of video clips, aggy already has their entire 2016 football intro video and recruiting film made as of this morning. They just edited out Dat.
-As a member of the Big Rigg fan club, I felt completely punched in the gut, as well. I didn't see that coming from Wonderboy (blah). Johny didn't have the power or weight he normally has to push guys around. I think it surprised him too. Still not a Wonderboy fan....ok, I can't say that name anymore.

I can't imagine Tyrone demonstrating the consistent accuracy Gilbert needs to make his offense work. In saying that, I must say I love Tyrone's commitment to Texas and his contribution in 2015.

Re the Ken Starr tweet, Mr. Starr is a big disappointment. He is a complete and total hypocrite.

Was skiing Saturday in Colorado with my son and his family -- huge Broncos fans. Came back Sunday and rooted for them to win, but seeing a couple of aggies on the winning team tempered my enthusiasm ... a lot. Yes, petty me.

Pretty boring game, but I was truly amazed that the Denver D could do to Carolina what they had done against my Patriots. Hats off to Wade Phillips, lousy HC but a great coordinator. I agree, good for him.

Any fan good will achieved with this signing class will disappear in a heart beat if Tyrone starts the ND game. I'm a fan of the human -- the QB? Not so much. 18 wheeler package is perfect for him.

The women's team is still pretty young, even with gifted seniors. But all players are "here" for the first time, so not surprised by their lackluster performances at times. That said, beating Iowa State at their house for what seems like the first time since.... FOREVER? --- is pretty cool. Both the men and women are fun to watch. Hoping tonight's game is a good one.

Hook 'em!!!

Please UFC, stop pretending that Roy Nelson needs to be the co-main event of any card that people actually are scheduled to tune in and watch.

… I was completely unprepared to see Stephen Thompson kick Johny Hendricks’ ass. As a ran of Big Rig, that fight was very disappointing.

100% agree on Nelson. Unfortunately a fat fighter with a grenade for a right hand is going to pull a big following no matter how boring and outdated his style has become. That fight was just a bad match up between two one tool guys. Rosholt was avoiding the right hand, Nelson was avoiding the takedown and they canceled each other out.

I literally watched the entire Hendicks fight with my mouth open. Wonder Boy made one of the best in the world look like an amateur. Meet the American Machida ladies and gents. Just sick stuff.

Here's the thing about #2: He is not. No way. I believe you posted a similar sentiment last year. At this point, with what is essentially a do or die season, I believe there is zero chance that Sterlin and Charlie go with Tyrone. I believe the opposite if far more likely - that other than the situational run package he is not seriously considered for the starting role. There is already plenty of data - data that is independent of the offensive scheme IMO.
I wish Tyrone all the best and a great year. But I say no way.
For me, I believe the new system, the new coach may be far more impactful than some apparently believe. So much so that what you have seen with the same guys under Watson can almost be taken with the grain of salt. Spring will be interesting. Just don't assume anything at this point based on what Swoopes/Heard had to work under and with so far. Personally, I don't think it is a case of someone will rise to the top, I think they all will, Beuchele included. Gilbert could disappoint but I don't think so.

Mark my words, Rivals will eventually come around on Ehlinger, even if it means that I have to go to the mattresses for the kid.

Ketch, I really appreciate your support of Sam, but not at the expense of sleeping with folks at Rivals. If debasing yourself is required for Ehlinger to get a 4th star, I am willing to accept his current ranking and allow you to keep your dignity. That said, your offer is noted and commendable.

Regarding Ehlinger, when I saw him in person, against Southlake, I had visions of Kyler Murray in the times he played against the Dragons. Southlake's defense actually played pretty well once they woke up and they really dominated in the second half. However, watching Ehlinger run around and make something out of nothing on play after play reminded me of how frustrating it was to play Kyler. I'm not saying, at a high school level, that he's Kyler Murray. He's not. In fact, I've not seen BETTER at a high school level than Kyler Murray at that position. Ehlinger is, however, special and plays much, much bigger than his frame. If I were a high school recruit, I'd be all in on trying to play with that dude at Texas. Wait.....That sounded awkward.

I was merely posting my personal experience. Usually it takes 2 or 3 tries before the phone is actually answered. Once, there was an error on rival's end not allowing me to access the boards. When I was talking to "Jenny" I mentioned that there was a Texas junior day the next day so it was important for it to be resolved quickly and she asked why I needed access before Monday if the markets didn't open again until then.

It's not that much different than any other customer service call centers located overseas, but I shouldn't have to reach out to you or Suchomel every time there's a problem... you guys have more than enough on your plates already.
I would simply say I hate that you had a turn-off experience, but that the support staff that extends to the subscribers goes beyond the call center.

Great 10 thoughts. Couple of comments/questions:
  • Ty is a good kid, great kid even, but if he starts even one game this year, we are in for a long season. Kid has not been able to win/lead on any level. I would still be happy to see him take the field in situational packages, but not as the primary QB.
  • Heard flashed a ton of talent this past year. He is electric and made a ton of impressive throws. Yeah, he has room to improve but if Sterlin is who we think he is, Heard will improve in the areas that killed him last year (pocket presence comes to mind). Plus having an offensive system that should be built for success will allow Heard to be (wait for it...) successful.
  • Always was a fan of Simms and Applewhite. We were lucky to have both. Man, we were so damn spoiled then and the QB's the followed the next 7 years.
  • Shaka is priming this team to make a run. God, I love that man - you could offer me any coach in the land (K, Izzo, anybody) and I double down on Smart. Going to be a fun ride with him. Hope his family gets so deeply rooted in Austin that they make it impossible for him to ever leave Texas...unless Austin gets an NBA team...
  • F Baylor...all of them...F 'em. Should turn that place into a prison.
  • Never was a big Manning fan. I have a world's worth of respect for him, but never rooted for Peyton on the field (including last night). But good for him. Take your time but make the decision that so many others don't. Have the fairy tale ending. Live a great life with no regrets. You did enough for the sport to leave on top. Again, good for him.
  • The SB game I thought sucked. Really sloppy. Von Miller and that D was insanely good. No doubt while Peyton was drinking a lot of beer, Von was smoking Bob Marley joints all night.
  • Ketch, do you own/have access to the subscribers PII should you part with Rivals? Hypothetically, of course. Look, I appreciate your candor, really do. But make no mistake about it - your subscribers are here for the content YOU provide, the OB staff/team, and the other crazies on this board. You can take your best assets with you and not lose the business, I am sure of that. You will undoubtedly make higher margins on a person by person basis for whatever you are giving to Rivals. But as another poster said, it isn't just your longevity you need to worry about, Yahoo is in trouble. If they end up being bought out, you may bet the farm on what happens post-transaction. Leverage the subs you have and consider all options available to go solo or partner with another group. I support it, and I am sure so many others will to.
  • Oh yeah, F Baylor.

I haven't read one of these in forever but I had a buddy alert me to a litter of applewhite cultist getting their panties in a wad. Did not disappoint. Maybe I will have to start reading these again. Lol just kidding.
Yes, if you're not reading this column every week, you're wasting your subscription.

I agree, i don't think he will stay a 5* as well based on his size. Correct me if i am wrong but i know Murray was a Rivals 5* for a long time, did he not ultimately finish with a high 4* ranking? I also think Tate will decommit from aggy before the end of the year, probably late in the year. But would you attribute his current 5* ranking to playing because he plays for one of the top private programs in the country stacked with D1 talent, and maybe because he is committed to the SEC who Rivals apparently just loves. He is also older then Sam because he was held back a year and has one of the best QB coaches out there.
a. I don't think Murray was ever a Rivals five-star.
b. He plays at a top program, he was the state player of the year as a sophomore and he is access friendly. He did not look like a five-star at the Rivals Challenge IMO and I was shocked at his physical stature.

thanks, i could have swore i had seen Murray as a 5* early in the rankings process, maybe i was wrong.

I would never think to email you about the customer service team not doing their job. Why would I? [/MEDIA]
words never said by most of the people emailing me. I hear the good and the bad.

Rivals/Yahoo knows most of us aren't going anywhere because of the online community aspect. That's why it took them almost a decade to upgrade the board software, the app they put out recently is about as bare bones an effort as you will ever see, and there have been years and years of empty promises about improving the experience for the end user. I understand why you are staying with them, but I know you also understand that there is very little love for rivals/yahoo within this community
a. Right or wrong, Rivals has seen that its business is incredibly loyal. Look at the BamaOnline situation. Those guys left and were replaced by an incredibly talented group of writers and the site lost less than 10-percent of its base, meaning that BOL had the largest Bama site anywhere forever and now it no longer does and might never have it again.

b. The reason why the network was mismanaged for much time falls on the shoulders of Yahoo itself. It failed to figure out how to do its job, but massive steps have been made to get away from that and the network basically acts separate from Yahoo right now. BTW, Yahoo loves Rivals because it makes a profit and pays a lot of bills.

c. I hope over time, this new direction will earn confidence from everyone but that is going to take a lot of time.

- Simms was 11 for 23 for 63 yards with an interception in that same game.

Ketchum, post: 4652943, member: 20"]I've said it about 10 times in this thread

1999 KSU (humiliated - 19 of 37 for 271 yards, 1 touchdown, 3 interceptions and three fumbles) - That was a K State team that throttled everyone that year. Don't think any other QB could have or actually did fare any better. They held opponents to 235 ypg that year and Applewhite alone threw for 271.
1999 Big 12 title game (disaster) 15 of 42 for 172 yards, 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions) - that was the worst play by our offensive line in a big game, maybe ever, only rivaled by the performance in the 2009 Big XII Championship game.
2000 Cotton Bowl (more humiliation) 15 of 21 for 121 yards and zero touchdowns before his injury) - Simms wasn't much better. 9 for 18 for 91 yards and sacked 3 times. Hodges Mitchell ran 13 times for 39 yards.
2000 OU (One of the worst losses in school history) 9 of 18 for 98 yards and an interception before being benched.
- Simms was 11 for 23 for 63 yards with an interception in that same game.

Simms was only 26-6 as a starter at Texas, only good for #4 all time, which was #2 all time behind Bobby Layne at the time before VY and Colt came along.

Major was 22-8 (#8) all time behind Colt, VY, Layne, Simms, Akins, JB, and Gardere. He also compiled 10 of those wins throwing against continuous stacked fronts and man coverage because of some Heisman trophy winning RB standing behind him.

I love Major to death. Even moreso as a coach. I still think his best days are ahead in his career. But this argument by Simms haters is just that...fueled by hate, jealousy, and a shit ton of revisionist history. Yes he dropped some turds in his shorts on the field, but no more than Major did and his record was better. QBs are judged by WINS. All of this 'Major was just a winner' stuff....well newsflash, Simms did more of it and lost less. No amount of whining about it will change this.

But forget the wins/records/stats/everything else, the fact Texas fans continue to treat Simms as some bastard outcast is f'ing retarded considering the long lasting, enormous impact he had on the program. AT THE VERY LEAST, he was THE reason for the ascension of Texas football from the moment he flipped from Rocky Top. Few if none of those offensive weapons, as well as the defensive blues that followed, sign if he doesn't come to Texas. Subsequently, Texas isn't Texas of the Mack era without him, PERIOD. Dude was the ultimate pied piper. Wake the f up Applecultist.
Best post in this thread. I love it when you get worked up.

It's his third year. It's time for Charlie to fly.

Won't fly high yet, but we will see an uptick. I think 8 games or so. Next year's abysmal senior class will assure that is the ceiling, IMO

However, 2017 we will see a tremendous uptick.

From our 2013 class, next year's senior class, we have five guys left on the team. Not 5 starters, 5 contributors....just 5 guys that are still on scholarship. That is abysmal and I honestly wonder if it's ever been done here before. I highly doubt it.

A few responses.

a. I'm not sure everyone fully read No.2.
b. That state title game clearly is carrying more weight than the rest of Sam's season.
c. I think Porter will play in late game when a non-heavy lifter is needed.
d. You might be right about the women.
e. Cam is still a bad mother. That Denver defense exploited his line and we were reminded how shitty his receivers are.
f. I'm just going to pretend that the Big Rigg fight never happened.

a. Who does have the consistency? Heard isn't more consistent.

b. No doubt.

Rivals underrated Sam's ability to stand in the pocket and make throws when traffic is around him. It's a skill few at the HS level have any more.

CS must be thanking lucky stars he's in this conference.

Shows again how structurally imbalanced the big xii is, Big State U with all the resources and its own network gets the most talent again, even after another losing season. The winning teams struggle to crack top 20. The Dodds plan of being in a conference UT could dominate year in year out was actually sound, if meek. Once the coaching gap closes, there should finally be some trophies in Belmont.
