Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend

… Spain looks really good right now… really, really good.
Not many teams have looked very good in the Euros, but Spain seems to be the best of the bunch thus far. I'm amazed how many more games have been enjoyable & well played in the Copa America.

After more than two decades on this beat, and after a combined 60+ years from my staff, you think we don't have the sourcing to get the goods on situations like this?

Your own speculation is something from the realm of denial.

The only thing I deny is that Perrin is the buffoon you want to make him out to be. I have known him for much longer than you have been alive. I know him to be very smart, extremely well prepared, diligent and conscientious to a degree that very few people can match. In addition to that, he is one of the most decent people on earth. It is easy for those not in the arena to sit back and throw stones when all does not go perfectly. That is all that you and your "sources" are doing while Perrin is working to solve the problem.

Well prepared for the courtroom? Sure. But this was a temporary gig

This is part of the problem. Always has been at Texas. Too many egos and too many cooks wanting to season the soup.
At least Perrin has most of the moving pieces starting to pull together. There will always be disgruntled people when changes
are made. Sounds like your source is one of those.

I think Ketch is just using hindsight. No one could have ever predicted that not hiring a real Athletic Director for a program that generates hundreds of millions of dollars and even has it's own television station would have ever not worked out somehow. I mean all you have to do is look how incredibly successful it is in the business world to appoint amateurs who bring nothing but popularity and charisma to key positions of authority and then just sit back and watch the unbridled profits come pouring in. Bad luck I guess.

I think his main point had to do mostly with timing of reaching out to prospective candidates prematurely and/or without fully gauging the landscape. I agree with him in his point of waiting two months could have made all the difference in outcome for 1 or more of those candidates. Wipe the slate clean regroup and start over makes the most sense now.

Wun-wun went out like a boss. Hated to see him go - he brought so much to the show from a fantasy perspective.

Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned. Ramsey learned that in a perfect end to that episode.

I haven't watched the OJ documentary yet. And I may not. I'm not sure I can deal with all the hyperbole and BS it will feed me.

Perrin can be all of the things you describe and still 1) 70 years old and 2) woefully inexperienced in his current job. He may have been the greatest thing since sliced bread in his prior career, but that doesn't mean much now, and the chances that he'll get where he needs to be at his age are incredibly remote. That's just the reality of the situation.

I've never suggested he's a buffoon... far from it. I've done nothing but heap praise on him for the most part over the last 12 months.

it's really good. Not sure what BS you're talking about being fed.

Could Perrin be thinking that this (having to hire a coach/manager) isn't exactly what he signed up for when he agreed to be the interim AD?

No, I think he was prepared that this might happen on his watch.

All documentaries have an agenda and the notion that he was trying to "out run being black" is silly.

I'm sure I'll watch once it hits Netflix but I got so fed up with it when I was a Sophomore in college when it all went down.

You don't know what you're talking about if that is your position. Seriously.

Are Ben Carson or Colon Powell trying to outrun their blackness? What about Conde Rice or Darrius Rucker? Or maybe Eminem is trying to outrun his whiteness?

This isn't about them. This is about OJ.

You're debating someone that has seen the doc?

You are clearly letting your personal relationship and Perrin's capabilities in a 50 year career that has nothing to do with being an AD cloud your judgment. He's a great, smart guy and a true Longhorn...we get it. But does that make him qualified to run arguably the top athletic program in the nation??? How many AD's at a top 10 school make their first coaching hire at that top 10 school???

By all accounts, he's royally screwed the BB search. I had ucla buddies emailing me making fun of us...we'll end up getting a good coach b/c the job is that good. But he's in charge and he hasn't gotten it done...

And BTW - I know the family, good people...but doesn't make him immune to legitimate criticism...

That is fair. Perhaps I'm incorrectly assuming the premise of the statement is because OJ didn't act "black".

I don't know how the baseball search could be called anything but one big cluster f.

Texas needs to put in a call to TCU's AD imo. He's managed to get Schlossnagle, Patterson, and Dixon in the three major sports.

Don't necessarily agree or disagree with the first point, but regarding the second, 4 thoughts.

1. Who the hell was Schlossnagle before the TCU job?
2. Patterson was simply a holdover from Franchione leaving.
3. Jaime Dixon's simply a TCU alum whose time was running out at Pittsburgh.
4. Chris Del Conte has only been at TCU since '09 so that makes points #1 and #2 moot.

I don't know a thing about Del Conte, but I do know that better arguments need to be made in his favor.

Bottom line is he has a done a damn good job with hiring/inheriting/keeping three really good coaches at a place that isn't known as a hotbed.

The only way to defend Perrin is because he is a nice guy and has friends. He is a trial attorney that has never had AD experience. Patterson may not have been a nice guy but was easily able to make his football and basketball hires without a creating a mess. Perrin struggled to hire an assistant football coach and is struggling to hire a baseball coach for a program that has a top reputation in baseball. An AD with minimal experience would have had a plan for the hire and would have known to wait until after the college world series for an announcement. Perrin is learning on the job, unfortunately, this is not the school to learn on the job. The problem he is trying to solve is the problem he created because of his lack of experience. But he is smart and has friends.

You have literally no idea what you are talking about. Zero.

I actually think he pretty much NAILED it...if you could be objective for one minute, then it would be pretty clear. Nobody is saying he's a bad guy. Just that being an AD at Texas requires more than just being a good-ole boy and glad-handing and slapping people on the back.

So you tear up a piece of rental equipment, try to commit fraud to cover this act and then feel like you put one over on 'them" ? You feel this is funny?
You need to take along look in the mirror and see what type of person you really are.
You nailed it. I run a car rental franchise. It's amazing how indignant people get when you give them a $40k asset, they bring it back with $2000 worth of body damage, and you ask them for their insurance information."
THOSE people need to be better. It's basically theft.

Perrin is a great guy, loves the Longhorns and is super smart. Why don't we make him the baseball coach?

It's because he's a lawyer and not a freaking baseball coach.

That's the exact same reason he shouldn't be our AD. I am thankful and applaud him for stepping up when we had to get rid of the wicked witch of the west. But it's clearly the time for him to lead the search in finding his replacement and letting an experienced AD do AD things.

I have a personal, petty beef with Perrin. I loved the fact that he's a Longhorn legend and stepped up when UT needed him. One of the Patterson ticket policies was that Season Ticket Holders, who didn't donate to the levels he set, could not re-sell their tickets on the secondary market. I thought surely Perrin would reverse that, seeing how arbitrary that is. However, he didn't because "my staff said the policy would be too hard to change." To me that said a lot about whether he was really up for the job. I'm with Ketch...let's get a real AD more sooner than later.
