Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (About the quarterbacks... again)

Well I was trying to be positive. And your response originally was to the OSU stats. Now that you are goalpost moving - The OU game he had zero.
I recall some against TCU and Tech. I’d say his rushing has helped us, wouldn’t you? I’d also say his ability to navigate the pocket and avoid sacks at times has also helped us. He’s stepped up and made throws under pressure a number of times. I didn’t think Card was as quick or good at either of those things and frankly the coaching staff vocalized that in Fall camp.

Casey had one bad game. He played well enough to lead his team to a win against TCU. He led his team to 48 points and threw 5 TDs against Oklahoma. He didn’t play well against Oklahoma State. Period. To be fair, neither did his offensive line or receivers.
Aren't you suppose to toe the line, and agree with Ketch?

I thought this was a thread about Johnny Cash.

My JC playlist is probably a little different than most. It isn’t mostly made up of songs that remind me of my father. He was a huge fan. He played JC around the house and sang along, actually with a similar voice. I am a fan but I listen largely as a memory of my father. Mostly songs that I remember him singing. My playlist, in no particular order, includes....

I Walk the Line

Daddy Sang Bass

Folsum Prision Blues
Hey Porter
Tennessee Flat-Top Box
A Boy Named Sue

Great post! That needs to be its own Spotify playlist

That's the truest and smartest take you've made.
Wrong again.

Wrong again.

well, today, you've had a doozy of a day.

People can't wrap their heads around this. It's what this team is until the roster is completely turned over.
Very true.

This team has some good players on both sides of the line and unfortunately the previous regimes failed to develop that talent. Year over year coaching turnover, scheme changes, and differences in teaching the fundamentals and technique have really F*cked this team. The biggest preventable problem this team suffers from is lack of coaching continuity, and we're seeing it playout every Saturday on defense.

With a bad O line, Casey is the better choice, but Card should get reps when Casey is injured or not playing well. Give him some reps, keep Casey the starter

His pocket presence is better, he’s got quicker twitch, and frankly he doesn’t look confused. Card doesn’t look like he has a good handle on the offense and what he is seeing on defense at this point. Does Casey miss throws and not see defenders….yes. When Casey’s on he’s better than Sam ever was and gives us our best chance to win, but he has his Spencer Sanders moments too

It would surprise me actually if cards 40 time wasn’t faster than Casey’s. His play at WR (fish and Soph) at the highest level of Texas HS football gives pretty good evidence of that, so not sure on the quick twitch comment. Decisiveness was clearly an issue at piggy. Let’s be clear that we have seen at least twice as many quarters of bad and late decisions by CT. Card looked great against the only ranked team we have beaten.

Straight line speed in a 40 and field quickness/gameplay speed are not the same. Card looks way more hesitant and unsure, you can’t play fast when you lack confidence. It’s pretty clear Card is not yet the guy as much as some want to keep banging that drum. Casey’s game against OU alone should settle that debate. Not to mention Card had the luxury of playing a team with literally zero film other than Alabama to go off. When Casey is on, he’s the best qb Texas has had since Colt and frankly even with his off games he is still doing better than Sam statistically. I will say that if he’s off I’m all for getting Card in the game rather than what we went on to see last week. We are fortunate to have two capable guys but like Sark has said Casey has earned the right to be the starter

Jones 3* 56th OT
Angilau 4* 10th OT
Majors 4* 5th C
Imade 3* 38th G
Kerstetter 3* 30th G

Bearcats O-Line
Tunstall 2* 221st OT
Cooper 3* 63rd OG
Renfro 3* 40th C
Metz 3* 80th ATH
O'Quinn 3* 91st TE

Here is our recruited O-Line vs that of the #2 team in the nation. Are these just recruiting misses or is this line (and the talent they supposedly have) just not being maximized because of coaching the last 4 years (both S/C coaching and position coaching?)

Is there any hope that with another year or two of assumed better coaching that these guys are salvageable? I know most are seniors but shouldn't these guys be good enough to win with?

You're speaking my language...I've been saying it since we hired Sark. We have to give them time and cannot expect miracles in year one. The team has holes at multiple positions with little to no depth at almost every position.

It's really sad to see this program in this state.

I asked it. Sarkisian is sticking with Thompson. Card is still developing.
Ha. Card should be developing on the field In games. At this point there is literally nothing to lose. We’re just trying to get the seniors to a bowl game at this point 😂😂😂

I literally wrote my second section of the column about the up-shit-creek nature of what next year's line might look like. No one has written more about that group than me.
I know, read it. My comment was directed at the long section, by quarter, about the QB’s bad stats. I think the stats are meaningless behind THIS year’s version of the matador offensive line.

I don't understand the thinking of Casey being that much better than Ehlinger at this point. Where is the proof?

The OU game? That is Casey's best game right? AS far as against decent teams.

Casey throws 5 TDs and no interceptions and 388 yds with 75 yards of it on a lateral pass to Worthy who breaks a tackle and goes 75 yds. he also ran for -24 yards. Very good game right?

Last year 4 OT loss to OU Sam throws for 2 TDS and 2 interceptions for 287 yds. he also runs the ball 23 times for 112 yards for 4 TDs! Of course for some reason they only run Bijan 5 times in that game! His rushing stats also included getting sacked 6 times as well.

So Sam accounts for 6 TDs and a total of 400 yards with 2 interceptions. Doesn't look too far off to me.

Also, I have never seen a QB take the punishment Ehlinger took in that game and just kept getting up and going after it.

Not saying he is better than Casey but there is 0 proof that Casey is that much better.

Oh and Casey also gets the benefit of playing for Sark as his offensive coordinator instead of Herman running him to death.:)

Good qb can stop them from loading the box
OK. We might be talking about different things. I was responding to someone saying Sam and Herman would have won the last 2 games. So in response to that, I was saying that they might have if Sark had been calling plays in the first half of each game. My only point is that I think Sark is a superior play caller to Herman.
On the other hand, you're talking about how a good QB can call audibles when the defense had loaded the box. I agree with you on that.

Ketch has touched on this a bunch while Sam had his great games and was a true competitor, he left a lot to be desired most notably with his 150 qbr at best. Lots of missed opportunities with throws, holding ball too long, etc. Casey has been more efficient all in all at this point. It is a somewhat small sample size ~8 games, 3 of which were a quarter to 2 quarters (included bowl game here). I like Sam but he killed us at times offensively

Casey Thompson is not this team’s problem. We do not have athletes on our D-line - no penetration, slow in pursuit and virtually no pass rush. Our O-line is slow, and in no way athletic. O-line misses assignments, too many untimely penalties and dominates no opponent. They collapsed in the second half’s of both the OU game and OSU Which caused our D to be note field ways long and they tired. We need several Blalocks, Studdards and Sendleins.
