Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Heads need to roll in Waco)

You mean 66-percent. You realize that number is better than some of the seasons Colt had?
Calculated wrong, my fault. Come on Ketch are you really going to compare Swoopes to Colt? Mccoy had a great RS Freshmen year ( 68.2 Comp. % 29 Tds 7 int. ) Yeah he had a sophomore slump but his performance on the field was still far ahead of Swoopes.
TS isn't in the same conversation with Colt McCoy IMO.

Thank you. That means a ton coming from a 15-year OB family member.
Ketch:

As you know, you and I have had issues and for some ridiculous reason your hatchet-man Jason banned me - although I still to do this day whole-heartedly defend my then position (which resulted in Jason's absolute stupidity) regarding Mack's sorryass to this day. NOTWITHSTANDING, I APPLAUD YOU TONIGHT.

I have devoted more than 10,000 hours of pro bono service over my 34+ year law career fighting child abuse.

Art Briles and Ken Starr should be terminated immediately.

Asking members who have been around here for 9 years to leave because they don't agree with you or get on your nerves is a bad business decision in my opinion.

City definitely team to beat in EPL. I'm really hoping Aguero gets injured. And as always Liverpool sucks.

You'll excuse me if I find few folks in this entire story that I have any faith in.

Story going forward is going to start and end with that dean. Why did she find that this didn't meet the preponderance of evidence standard? Did fball coaches talk to her about the case? Other pressure? Or did she simply not believe the victim (while the jury did)? If this becomes a disaster for them, it will because of her.

There's a shit ton of failure to sort through. Plenty for everyone up there to share.

That may be true, but I don't have access to all of the facts. Should football coach Briles be held to a hire standard than a judge/jury that was presented evidence by a prosecutor?

Ketch, I encourage you to share this story with the public. Take it to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, online news sources, and any other place I have not thought of. I believe it was about 15 years ago Baylor had a cover up over one Baylor basketball player killing a teammate. I remember when Barry Swizter was brought into the OU president and scolded for the number of felons he had on his team and their activities (firing automatic weapons in the dorm for one) and Barry's response was "Hey I just won a National Championship" After Barry was finally fired I spoke to a big OU alum who told me they were just waiting to have a season where Barry only won 9 games so they could fire him. These are sad times. I applaud Coach Strong and his value system and I think we all have a responsibility to share the truth to expose those who will not protect our society's value system of protecting the weak.

There is nothing wrong with men crying. Through the generations men were "supposed" to be the stoic towers of strength, unaffected emotionally by things around them. What a crock of sh*t. When, at age 17, I was undergoing the most complicated surgery doctors knew how to perform on the hip, my father spent most of the day in the john, crying his eyes out. I found out about this years later. My dad often came across as an uncaring monarch. There are two things with this picture. Firstly, I believe that my relationship (as well as those of my 2 brothers) would have been much stronger had we seen how he felt. I needed to know that he felt that deeply. Secondly, while he was in the john, my mother was alone trying to deal with her own fears. I agree 100% that men cry and I think the idea that it is not manly is absurd. If not expressing what you feel is manly, I'm not, and never will be.
I had a no crying fixation at one time myself.. then we lost our 18 year old in a car wreck..no crying rule lost.. grief won
I identified with geoffs comments because these were 2 close enough incidents especially to a new father that he will have to always have this in his mental calculus before he lets Haven out of his sight. There have become so many monsters out there who get.protected by ostensibly fine bastions of higher thought and learning as well as other institutions just because they can sack a Quarterback, catch a 15 yard out or the like.

We lost our beloved Tracie in a one car accident in East Texas only a short distance from and time from the Cole Pittman tragedy which is one reason that Marc and I communicate so much on those days and another reason that the anniversary of Coles passing is just as significant as Tracies. If you don't get how two seemingly disconnected events can cause similar emotions then I guess its just better off that we don't know each other outside of a faceless message board. As for Ketch, I'm glad to have known him although somewhat anonymously for the last 15 years in part because of his willingness to be this vulnerable. My own vulnerability came crashing into my life in October 2006 and without the help of many on this board back then I wouldn't have recovered as I've been able to..

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your efforts with these victims.

Good stuff, but I'm not sure I'll ever understand someone crying over two situations that couldn't be any further removed from them. The evening news must be tough on you.
You're a flawed human being. I hope for you that each day that goes by provides significant maturity. You sincerely need it. Good luck.

2 years ago I might have agreed with you but I have a 19 month old daughter and this really resonated with me. Thanks Ketch

Ketch...I remember holding my baby girl the same. With a blink of an eye I was moving her into her dorm for her freshman year at U.T. yesterday...Can't explain the joy, the tears, and most of all the fear. I will pray everyday for a safe 4 years.

You have no empathy. If you could fake it just a little you'd have the makings of a CEO.

Geoff, I need you to publish publicly the first half of the article. I am not a father but I have 6 year old and 11 month old nieces, that are children of two D1 athletes. I want this published so I can explain why I will talk down all that is Baylor until the entirety of current leadership is removed. I'll push them to OU and A&M over Baylor after this travesty.

"There is no way a guy should hit a woman," [Texas Head Football Coach, Charlie Strong] said. "There is no reason for it. If it happens, you need to find somewhere else to play. It isn't hard. Sometimes people think it's hard. You have values. Treat women with respect. No drugs. No weapons. How hard is that? I don't get it."

This ain't rocket science, folks...

Great stuff on Briles and Baylor. Baylor is starting to take on the image of Florida State. The Tiger Woods comment ,IMO, is off base. The fact is that Tiger is getting exactly what he deserves. Now he has come out with the statement that his hip was bothering him during play. If you are a great athlete you don't make excuses. You realize the problem and work on it. Bottom line is that he has the yips on chipping and it ain't gonna go away. I'm excited to see all the young golfers take over the game and challenge each other. Tiger was never challenged by anyone. Other than Tiger the golfing was mediocre.

There is no defense for Baylor, Briles to Starr, for allowing that sick bastard, Sam U, to retain his full ride scholly through graduation, after the rape allegation and through felony indictment.

probably the worse thing to happen to Briles from Baylor is he gets suspended for their Lamar Univ. game. but only after public, media, etc, put pressure on Baylor to do something.

It's a sad case of what happened for sure. How Baylor/Briles mismanaged the whole affair, the bad things that happened to the poor young lady, the bad things that are still happening to her, Baylor's post situation position, Baylor's total 100% failure in taking the correct actions from the beginning and that failure continues to exist.

Waco/Baylor is becoming the Devil's Den.

Disagree. Over the those nine years, this site has grown at a rate that virtually insures no poster is above reproach. Bad business would be the owner letting that happen.

Great write-up Ketch. I don't have children and your take still resonates with me. I can only imagine what it does with those with daughters.

This list of arrests is not the proper angle of the story and I think it takes away from the two scandals at play here.

Two things don't line up that are almost impossible to refute.

  1. Baylor's handling of the assault post incident. At best incompetent and callous. If you give Baylor the benefit of the doubt, they simply did a piss poor job protecting the young woman and investigating the incident. And this is SERIOUS! It is not a kid smoke weed. It is not a kid caught with a beer at age 19. One person violated another in a most heinous act and the school did a piss poor job reacting to it. A cynic; a baylor/briles hater could read more nefarious into it. But let's stick to what we know. And what we know sucks!
  2. The list of all the arrests is muddied. Sadly, you could list Texas' or Notre Dame or Arkansas, etc and find lots of Josh Gordon stories. You will find an occasional crime as bad as Ukwachu's. Heck, we had two players assault a girl last year. You are missing the point when you focus on anyone not named
    • Phil Taylor
    • Shawn Oakman
    • Sam Ukwachu
    • Mike Orakpo
Something does not match other schools in this area (at least the 5 from the Power 5 conferences. ALL schools have knuckleheads like Josh Gordon. All schools have weird stories and kids that get caught with a drink or smoke. Many (including Texas) have some that commit violent acts sadly. What distinguishes Baylor from all the rest is these 4 were KICKED OFF their previous team for repeated violations and/or violent activities. Noone else is taking these guys - Not sure one of the power 5, but if I am wrong than it is nowhere near 4. Read about Mike Orakpo. WHY IS Briles taking this kid and bringing him to campus? One school's actions and policies are not like the others.

Ketch did nail it a bit and it is something I am anxious to find out more. Why did Briles not dig a little deeper into this kids past. Why does he keep bringing the castoffs who have violent pasts to campus? It is downright lucky this practice has not burned them before. That to me is the story.

(BUY or SELL): If Texas was opening the season at home vs Rice or North Texas instead of at Notre Dame, Jerrod Heard would be the starting QB?

(Sell) There’s no trying to convince you that Swoopes is really the best quarterback on the team by a decent margin, huh?

First, great article. One your best ever.

This was my Buy or Sell submission for this week. I read an article by another beat writer where stated that Heard would probably be the starter under that scenario. I was surprised he said that and wanted your opinion on it. I agree with you that's a "Sell".

The diatribe on Coach Briles and Bsylor itself is well warranted for thier failure in this matter. Just the opinion of someone who tries to see the bigger picture.
I hope it eventually is resolved in an appropriate way but.....just the thought of a somewhat pessimistic guy. After all, it is about the dollar.

I'm also okay with stepping away from football for a moment or two to deeply think about what's important.

I struggled to hit the "post" button but here it is.

Riles will not be fired this season with 1st game only 2 weeks away. Baylor can make investigation take all season and then possibly let him go. Just win baby. BTW great article Ketch
