Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (It's a put up or shut up NIL world)

Seriously man.
Man, I wrote the most unique column in the industry on Mother's Day and got a B-.

You'll forgive me if I reject you like Anthony Davis swatting Warriors shots in the paint.

Not great, but I don't justify bad as being acceptable because it's not as bad as something else.

I'm just saying that the sport is the sport. You are applying words of standards that haven't truthfully existed in connection with it for decades. Maybe even a century.

Good list. My #1 didn't even make your list "In Dreams."

Even an AD mention would have gotten you an A-!!!! Somehow the Knicks got one.

The Knicks got one because the losers are usually more interesting than the winners.

It's the reason why there are several Sixers threads on the board right now and none about the Celtics.

And I'm just saying that's a failure. I mean this is all true of the sport like in the last 18 months?

  1. It gets laughed out of the supreme court - see the NCAA
  2. They shake hands and then immediately steal members - see the Alliance
  3. They publicly break rules and nobody reports it because the NCAA is spineless - see Pat Nurduzzi, Lincoln Riley, John Ruiz etc
  4. They basically relegate each other - see realignment

And I could go on. Now, the crazy part is that most of this is more fun than most of the actual games on Saturdays. I am entertained, but that's probably because Texas is getting a lot of the benefits...

As far as NIL, I do recognize the great people who are putting together these charitable events. It's a ton of work, and they are making a real positive impact. Kudos to them. But it's all a means to a different end. If leadership came out tomorrow and said that charity was off the menu and instead all the athletes will participate in a pickle ball tournament on campus, then there would be pickle ball tournaments popping up all over the country instead of children's hospital visits.

I think we're walking around the same circle, just in different directions. You're saying it's broken and let's do the best we can, I'm saying it's broken and let's fix it. I'm sure we would both want to do the best we can while fixing it, but reality is we should shut up and just be entertained by whatever comedy comes next.

a. I think it's wide open in the NBA. No truly great team.

b. There's pressure on all of them. Ask Sam.
Sam only had to worry about “being back.” He was not expected to go in the first round of the NFL draft. Prior to Sam, we barely even had a QB to speak of since Colt, 2009 really.

The Lakers and LeBron are the most talked about team on OB. Literally no one gets more clicks. The Sixers are hot because James Harden flamed out again.

There are no light switches in football. Just God given ability, consistent effort and doing what you are coached to do. Football is not very complicated as it relates to individual players. Organizing all the moving parts is the coach's job.
I will mention one intangible, and that is confidence. Confidence changes everything

I think we're too far down the road to fix it. That would require steps taken that no one really wants to take.

I suppose I've just come to accept it for what it is.

There are a variety of pressures. Sam was asked to carry the program without anywhere near the help that Quinn has.

Well, they'll certainly get their run in the coming weeks.

RE: NIL...

Not sure if it jives with what you are hearing Ketch, but I saw this posted over the weekend and thought it had to bode well:

Nice section on the cards. I don’t buy the exotic color hype to determine the “best” cards (I think that is trying to create fake scarcity). I focus on core traditional parallels & colors. Red, Gold, Blue, & standard refractors.

That said I stake claim to having the best Quinn Ewers PSA graded auto collection out there. The 2021-22 Pro Set Auto is incredibly tough to get in high grade. I’ve spent nearly 2 years accumulating everything I can buy in the $50-$150 raw range & submitted for grading. So far I have 34 PSA 9’s or 10’s. I have been paying $250 for any PSA 10. I really need him to be a first round pick this coming draft!

Wowzers.

There wasn't a lot of low-numbered cards to choose from on the market right now. I picked that one because it was /7 and graded.

Care to pull back the curtain on this column? Were you coerced into writing the NIL part from someone within the program?

Our fans lack the conviction to properly fund NIL for the long-term. It’s quite obvious from the responses on this site. Some are actually proud that they are too cheap to help fund NIL. They would rather bitch and moan while doing nothing and refusing to take any ownership.
What's your monthly contribution level?

Enjoyed it, thanks as always! On your points 3a, b c, I totally agree with them, but I also think they are so intertwined they are almost the same point. If Sark takes the next step as a coach then he as the QB whisper should have Quinn taking the next step and the team should be playing to a standard and not to the competition.

I am going to say it happens because I am viewing life through burnt orange glasses but I see the reasons it may not happen.

Point 3d, while a major point that I completely agree with we can’t do anything about it, so that just makes the points above even more important.

The folks that have organized the NIL for Texas have done a remarkable job.
It cannot be a fun job constantly having to ask the bigger donors for more $$.

You know what would really help as far getting donations?

Win some freaking football games this fall! TX goes 10-2 and wins the Big 12 championship and the $$ will be flowing in. They won't have to ask for it.

I would like to know how much more $$ TCU has coming in after making the National Championship game?

Here's hoping it all comes together. It would be awesome for the site.

That’s where he was born I believe. I’ve seen the sign working in the oil field in west TX. Think it says “boyhood home of Roy Orbison”.
Per Wikipedia:

"Orbison was born on April 23, 1936, in Vernon, Texas.[1] He was the second of three sons born to Orbie Lee Orbison (1913–1984) and Nadine Vesta Shults (1914–1992). According to The Authorized Roy Orbison, the family moved to Fort Worth in 1942 to find work in the aircraft factories.[2] He attended Denver Avenue Elementary School[2] there until a polio scare prompted the family to return to Vernon."
