Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Reliving the search all over again)

My son Hendrix's first contribution to the column when I wasn't looking.

We have child labor laws in this state. . . . . .

BUY or SELL: A wide open QB competition in the spring, which bleeds over into August. The starter is not named until about 10 days before the opener. Merrick and Locksley challenge for the position.

(Sell) I was with you all the way until the part about Merrick and Locksley, two players I do not believe will impact the quarterback position in 2016.

.

After 2005 Vince left early for the show . . .. he said he had confidence in our scout team QB. . . who most knew only because of his firearm "name" .. . but was unheard of.

There have been reports (though hard to filter through the "insiders") that Kai has performed very well in that scout team role. . . ..certainly it gives him a great deal of snaps.

So, why do you think he will not be part of the mix. . . and do you not see Heard progressing?

If (I believe you stated this above). ..Swoopes starts 2016. . . .we are in real trouble.

The bottom line is that Gilbert will choose the QB, likely in late August. And many on this board will bitch no matter who he chooses.

Good stuff.

Will echo what you said about the staff's work. Collectively, it might be the best couple of weeks I've been a part of over the nearly 10 years I've been here in some capacity.

Shaka telling us that when he saw Charlie after the UNC game he asked him "did you get your guy?!" was a pretty cool moment that showed just how tuned in EVERYONE was to this.

I think Charlie could have done way, way worse than a football mind like Gilbert at OC. He's basically been around the Briles system his entire life and I think the chemistry and experience he has with the same OL coach is an underrated aspect. Those two spots must be on the same page, and now will be.

A couple sources told me this and it was in the War Room, but recently those around the program felt like Texas was now finally really able to settle in some after the China trip and everything that followed. UTSA was its best performance of the year, but UTSA is also the worst D1 hoops team I've ever seen. So it was hard to weigh what Texas was doing. Even though the Longhorns didn't play their best, they showed the things Shaka wants to be about - energy, toughness, confidence, and enthusiasm.

I really don't know what to think of everything Houston gave up for an elite reliever, but I do think the Phillies probably couldn't say no to that haul.
Good stuff, my man.

a. I bet that was a cool moment. Did you write about it? Did I miss it?

b. 100-percent agree on thoughts of the hire.

c. I really think coming back and winning the way that it did against an underrated UTA team got things going. That second half of basketball was a turning point that set up the UTSA performance.

d. Am I crazy or if Appel just doesn't make it as a starter, he ends up as a back of the bullpen guy? Seems like a win for the Phils to have him added.

It's poor form to congratulate yourself repeatedly in the same column, but good work on the reporting of the OC situation

LMAO! It really doesn't matter if you think that Swoopes is the best fit for Gilbert's offense either for you have no idea if Swoopes can grasp the offensive concepts and throw the ball WHEN it needs to be thrown. Hell, for all we know Merrick may be the one that takes the bull by the horns and takes the qb job as his own. This is just too funny.
Neither do you. Heck neither does Gilbert at this point. A completely new system is a clean slate across the board. Whichever student grasps it the quickest and executes it the best will get the job... I'm just glad it looks like Gilbert is trying to make sure that he has enough pupils in the classroom to ensure that there will be one that emerges.

If Tyrone Swoopes id the starting QB for Notre Dame next season the entire staff needs to be fired on the spot. That experiment should be OVER He has failed and failed and failed Tyrone Swoopes although probably a great guy and TEAMMATE IS NOT A d1 qb. That has been more than well proven.

a. Colt McCoy was the No.1 or No.2 prep quarterback in the state in 2005. People knew who he was.;)

b. I have folks inside the program telling me he's destined to play wide receiver. I can't speak of insiders, but this info comes from a very good place.

c. I actually said that I thought someone not on the roster right now emerges as the starter. I simply said that Swoopes is the preferred guy among the coaches that remain, although who knows what that is worth?

Yeah, I thought the work deserved an attaboy, so I stepped out on the poor form ladder, it's true.;)

thanks for the response. . . .not what I wanted to hear but it is what it is. . . .

One thing I have to say that I truly hate about the CFS regime. . . . . I do'nt get into closed practices anymore. . . .

It's regarded as one of the better action movies of the last decade and has been nominated for multiple major awards.

I would suggest your view is definitely in the minority.

Bernie likely had more lines than Tom Hardy, and he was a dead.

Actually, you're first I've heard champion this single-act film. I compare it to Tim Burton's version of Planet of the Apes, e.g. zero up-and-downs and just plain flatlined throughout.

"However, Gilbert was told he was not coming to Austin on a one-year trial basis, according to my sources. Instead, Strong was backed by Fenves and Perrin during their meeting on Friday, and told Strong would be retained after the 2016 season. Once Gilbert received the reassurances he wanted, he agreed to become the new offensive coordinator."

After two disaster seasons, pitiful assistant coaching decisions, inept game management, embarrassing press conferences, etc. etc. etc. I guess they HAD to say this. Sadly, I think 7 wins keeps him another year. The gnashing of teeth would come from anything less and in that scenario think nuclear explosion that Fences & Perrin would not escape the fallout.
Of course, making a bowl next year is an improvement and so that would likely keep Charlie. How far we have fallen....

If Charlie doesn't make it, those truths will be on his tombstone.
Few Questions,
What kind of passer was Merrick? Do you get the feeling Kai would rather change pos or transfer?
What players do you see could have new life with the new offense?
Anything new on Juco players since they need a lot of OL help and DE/DT?
Who was the QB everyone was talking about that was in place to come to Texas?

It depends on who Texas thinks it can get, specifically the BMDs. If a guy like Saban were on the hook like in 2013, the politics that existed back then aren't in play IMO to pull it off. The reason Perrin was kept for two years is so that if Charlie fails, a replacement is put into place and those that were froze out last time and have been working behind the scenes so hard to get a monster, don't get froze out.

I'm confused, what movie are we talking about?

If we have to go with Swoopes again it will be a dead team walking. He simply is not an accurate passer. Worse though is he is missing the intangible factor that winning QBs have.

WOW! Is that not the same as what I was saying? You just reiterated my point. I just mentioned Merrick because no one seems to count him in. But since you just HAD to disagree then so be it....

Easy there, big fella. I was only disagreeing with your opinion that there was no way that the best option could be Swoopes. I doubt it, but nobody, not even Coach Gilbert, knows at this point. That's all.

I still call them the Lady Longhorns and apparently that makes me a jerk.

I have been watching UT WBB since the 80s and I still sometimes call them “Lady Longhorns”. I don’t mean any disrespect when I use the term but I understand why they would generally prefer to be referred to as just “Longhorns”. I understand why some men don’t watch women’s sports. I might very well be one of them if I didn’t have two daughters who played basketball, volleyball and ran track and cross country. I came to clearly understand that the women and the girls work just as hard, play through just as much pain, sacrifice just as much, and are just as committed as the men and the boys. They like to be seen and respected as athletes.

However, with two of the best WBB teams in the country playing on a Sunday afternoon they couldn’t even come close to filling the lower section of the drum. I think they would be happy with any name that you give them as long as you just talk about them.

This team really does have a chance to be very good. Like always, they will need to stay healthy. But, right now I think this is clearly the best Texas WBB team in past 10 years. Consider that a couple of the contributors are freshmen that should only get better, and the anticipated return of one of last year’s starters in Ariel Atkins. They have size, speed and depth.

I would like it if they had a little more size at guard and a little more depth in the post. But, hey. No team is perfect.

I know that I may be the only person thinking this way be I can see this OC hire being really good for Texas and it saving Charlie Strong.

Also, if we’re keeping it 100, Strong just hired a coordinator with some fairly sizable intestinal fortitude when you consider he was not only unafraid to tell big-boy Texas to take a hike if his demands weren’t met, but he practically had the Longhorns begging for his services on Friday night because of his stone-cold poker face.

Thank you, Jesus. Hopefully, 3rd time a charm.

Please bring those big balls to our offense.

That's why Texas must bring in another option and really needed to each of the last four years.

Saban went out and got Jeremy Pruitt to be his DC, showing again why he's so good at what he does. And Texas, after the posting the worst defense in school history, decides it's going to ride that horse again. Saban gets Pruitt, and we get . . . Bedford.

Great read and great reporting.

If the coaches think Swoopes is the best QB we will have a repeat of this year. He is a great kid but he underthrows all bombs and decides to pass on 4th down to the worst % wr we had. What was worse
is the ball was thrown poorly. Swoopes does not make decisions quickly and never has.

Lady Longhorns is paying homage to the best era of basketball in UT history.
