Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (This is the way)

@Ketchum

Thank you for your top ten list this week. I was sort of surprised at my reaction. First, it shows a level of honestly and humility that shows your character. But I was also struck by how hard your business and our passion is--trying to read the tree leaves--and letting our hopes rise and fall on such young fellas. I lived almost all of those moments, and we were all snookered by some or most of those those situations too.

I once had the pleasure of running into RC Slocum on a plane. I shook his hand and told him that I was from a "house divided" so knew quite a bit about him and his damned good run against us in the 90s. He knew my uncle by name. Made me instantly feel at home. Same cloth as Mack. I was able to compliment him on something he said on what wound up being his final season (vultures were gathering). He was asked about how the donors were going to be after the loss, and he said, "I don't put a lot of stock in people that get upset when nineteen year old kids make mistakes."

In very typical fashion, he demurred at the compliment, but simply added, "if you every had a son or daughter play sports..."

In the times that I've truly regretted something. It's always a time when I was cutting or aggressive and had no reason to be other than being short in my head. I really identify with the Marcus Johnson story, really all sides. I wasn't a D1 athlete but played tennis at SWT before transferring to UT. I was a TV dinner ;) But that would still smart a bit. I'm a father, and I'd be f'n PISSED about it from that perspective. And I have absolutely stepped in it in ways that I can't get back in the genie back in the bottle. I hate it. I've even apologized, immediately in some cases. But for whatever reason, I still feel mournful of those moments.

You're a good man Ketch. Thank you for putting your heart and mouth on the line.

...
As a side note, I mentioned the renewal of the rivalry between A&M and Texas to RC; he was for it, unsurprisingly. But he said one of the things his most proud of is that he's coached in more of those games than any other coach on either side.

Reminded me of a time when I was talking to a buddy about advertising--also a very tough business. He had collected another award, and I was saying he pretty much had the full suite--Effies, Addys, Clios, Lions, on my!

He said there's one more.
I said, yeah? "
"It's the toughest one to get...(pauses for effect and then whispers like the word "plastics" in the Graduate)...longevity."
I said yeah, man, I want that one.
He smiled, and added, "me too."
He was forced out in his fifties within eight months of that conversation.
Thanks for the kind words and that was an awesome post!

No need to out the source - but can you acknowledge the source is at least not reliable/ trustworthy for any future discussions on other topics related to UT football? Or did they really just get fed bad information themselves from Sark or others on purpose?

Oh, lessons have been learned.

ok, keep walking me through it.

The coach risks offending the folks that facilitate roster talent and puts his job in jeopardy in any number of ways

or

He doesn’t.

I’m not trying to convince you that it happened. But you’ve basically belittled a perspective that actually plays out across all of professional sports in a sport that is increasingly - professional. There have been movies about it - EG Money Ball. And I’m curious why you’re so dubious of the potential.

What you're suggesting isn't really commonplace and until I see it actually happen in the present, I'll probably be dismissive.

No one would dare tell Sarkisian that the guy they hired and believe in his business about the thing he's supposed to be an expert on the most.

I played golf with a recent graduate who has several friends on the team. They laughed at any report where Card was an option because they told him Ewers was infinitely better. To see these reports on OB that Card was soooo close is exactly what they laughed at for months.

The “birdies” have an agenda and are duping the reporters they speak with.

You don't really know what you're talking about with the sources and you'd laugh if you knew the true story, but since I can't tell it... 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps, but this kid was literally laughing out loud that Card was mentioned as a leader by any news source.

Again, his friends are actual players.

I don't care. People close to Ewers were much more nervous, which is very weirdly ironic.

Fair enough.

This is illustrative of the friction being baked into the new system:

"That's the [NCAA] Board of Governors telling the Jon Duncans of the world what's happening out there is not right," Lyons said.

Duncan is the NCAA enforcement director.

"I have some coaches call me and say, 'I don't know what to do about this booster because he's offering all these kids NIL money and I don't even want the kid','" shared Todd Berry, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. "All this was predictable. … It's coming to fruition at this point."

I do understand your concerns.

Ironically, most of the NIL money Ewers makes goes through his agent's work. A small percentage would come from the folks that, in theory, would want to make such a call.

I undrstand you're talking about a 30,000 foot convo and that's fair.

I'm not sure why folks keep saying that Ewers hasn't thrown a pass " since his junior year in high school"

He classed up. He didnt have a senior year. He hasn't thrown a pass in 1 full season. Just like every other QB who red shirts.

Done. Quasi rant over

The only way the NCAA is going to be able to reel this in is with a cap of some kind. However, even if they come to that agreement with the schools, it probably won’t matter because the NCAA players would have to unionize first (the courts have said the schools/NCAA are not allowed to dictate a player’s earning capabilities), and then a crate a collective bargaining agreement with the NCAA.

Basically, the NCAA is screwed.

Because he hasn’t thrown a pass in a meaningful game since his junior year in high school. It’s not a difficult thing to comprehend when it’s a fact that he hasn’t played since 2020, when it is now 2022.

I mean... it's a fact. He didn't just redshirt. He didn't play as a senior in HS.

He didn't have a senior year.

He enrolled at Ohio State the August after his junior year at SLC.

His "senor" year was a a college freshman.

He has not sat out two football seasons

Except that it’s the exact same amount of inactivity as any other redshirt freshman quarterback over the years. Colt McCoy didn’t play a snap between his senior year of high school in 2004 and his RS Freshman year in ‘06. Same with VY, Johnny Manziel, the list goes on. And Quinn was already 18 by the end of his junior year of high school, and had started for two years already. Face it, it’s a meaningless distinction in Quinn’s case, but everyone keeps using it over and over as if it means something. It doesn’t.

It's a reminder that he skipped what some people view as a significant season of development.
