Bonjour mes petits sacs de chou aux yeux endormis.
(That's french)....
Today, we find ourselves pitted against the formidable foe known as the University of Louisiana Monroe. No matter how hard I try and hype these guys, it ain't gonna work.
They've played 2 games thus far- one against UAB (who also lost to Arky) and one against Jackson St..... and they've won both.
But enough of that- on to today's history lesson.
ULM was founded in 1931 as a Juco named "Ouachita Parish Junior College". The Ouachita Indians were a small tribe of Native Americans that lived in the Ouachita mountains and valley that ran from Oklahoma, through Arkansas and into Louisiana.
The name "Ouachita" is actually a Choctaw word that translates to "place with large buffalo".
The Ouachita Indians were discovered by a French-Canadian explorer named Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville.
Now why is this guy important? Well, Mr. French-Canadian guy befriened the Ouachita who showed him around Louisiana, eventually taking him south toward the coast.
Jean-Baptiste then finds this large crescent piece of land jutting out into the ocean and says to himself "huh, maybe this large piece of land will provide protection from things like Hurricaines and tidal surges.... so I'm gonna get permission to set up shop here and build a village".
So he sends a message back home to his older brother who rubber stamps the idea (they ran a big ass fur trading company called the Hudson Bay Company) and so it was done.
The city he founded on that crescent shaped land, designed to withstand tidal surges and hurricanes, was called New Orleans....................
300 years later...... well, you know.
The French----- 300 years later and they're still fvck things up.....
Oh, btw-- the most famous alumni from ULM is this dude named Tim Mcgraw-- you may have heard of him.
Also- the Ouachita used to bury their fallen warriors alongside the horse they rode into battle.
So in true Ouachita tradition, here's hoping we bury 84 horses at midfield today.
From the couch in my living room watching my 9 month old chew on my ankle--
TEXAS!
