We aren't those countries and neither is Europe. We are different. They are command and control smallish countries. We are large, diverse, and much more independent. They learned from SARS and MERS. They went out and tested people and quaritned them. You know just like we are doing but without the same testing they are doing. Italy is taking it serioulsy and they are tested more people in a day than we tested in a year.

Secondly, Its not a head cold its a resipratiory virus. It tears up epithelial tissue worse than the flu does. Most people are fine but Its killing people especially older and sensitive populations. We do a good job protecting those populations because 70% of people over 65 and almost 90% of health care workers get the flu vaccine. We don't have a vaccine for the corona viurs so we could have more Washington State Scenarios if we don't take precautions.

You know what? You are absolutely right and I'm wrong. I got two things confused.

He attempted to cut the CDC budget and was rebuked by congress. He was trying to do it again for a 2021 budget proposal.

What he did was disband the pandemic response team and not replace them. That was a huge vulnerability and is his fault, but he was not able have an effect on their budget.

When President's try to balance a budget after a tax cut, something has to lose money. It hit our family hard in the 90s when Clinton proposed his budget and Congress cut military defense spending. Lockheed (GD at the time) was kicked squarely in the balls...my dad included. But, we made it through.

Trump fired that team over two years ago, but the job is/was filled from other areas. With that said, this underfunded medical system problem has been going on for decades. It is getting worse. And yes, the President is partially at fault. However, our congress has been dog shit for about 19 years now when it comes to policy.

I would look at how the effect the virus is having by country depending on when/what measures were taken. Compare Italy to Vietnam. You can even compare Wuhan to the rest of China.

I'm sorry but that's not the case. President Trump has said multiple times that anyone who wants to get a test can get a test. That simply isn't true. There still aren't enough test to go around. There are only a small percentage of people that meet the threshold for being able to get tested. There are nursing homes with people who have suspected cases but cant get them. There are people who have interacted with corona virus patients who cant get tested because they are currently asymptomatic. He really needs to stop saying anyone who wants to get tested can get tested.

Then there was the travel ban debacle last night. First its an all out ban on people and trade, then through tweet and corrections we get piece by piece what it really was after the markets were spooked. Then there is the whole UK thing. So all a person has to do is take the train under the channel to London and Fly out of the UK. Americans and Green Card holders can fly out of any country and since we don't have test kits there is no way of knowing if they are asymptomatic carriers.

He is the president. He has to do better in a crisis.

If I was in charge I would have directed the CDC to develop a test in December when the outbreak was happening in China. I would have done what they did in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. I wouldn't have downplayed the seriousness. I would have tested as many people as possible and then quarantined all of those people.

Well an update in Cali. The number of cases increased by 15% overnight. Out here in Placer County where I live a death has occured. It was a 72 year old man who had just returned from a cruise to Mexico. Marcus Breton is a columnist out here that I respect. This morning he wrote that closing the schools is overracting as the reported cases involving the elderly. He was sympathetic to the virus but also reported that this is mostly elderly so far. He said there 24 reported deaths in the Seattle area but they haven't closed the schools. Just sayin

As of now there are 4 reported deaths in Cali. But 3 of them are in the Placer County/ Sacramento area where I live all of them elderly. But there's just one thing for me personally I'm 65.

I'm doing it. I leave Austin around 2:30 next Thursday, fly to Dallas and then on to London. I'm either catching the chunnel to Paris and the from Paris to Pau on the TGV-- or I'm having a friend with a TBM 850 pick me up in London and flying down to Pau. After I finish my meetings, I'm supposed to fly back April 1 out of London. I have contingencies put in place in case the UK gets closed down while I'm there. I'll take the train from France down to Gibraltar and take a craft across to Morocco or Algiers and fly home from there. I'll let you dudes know how it works out.

Whataboutisms don't really change the situation on the ground. I am providing specific examples of what the president should have said. Not saying "Anyone who wants a test can get one" doesn't require a 90 minute TV spot. Clearly articulating a policy that about travel restriction doesn't take a 90 minute spot either. Turn a 10 minute speech into a 20 minute speech so you can clearly state what is going on or you could get things right the first time. IF you aren't banning all "goods and cargo" then don't say you are banning them. Its really pretty simple. That doesn't even cover the fact that travel bans only really work if the viurs isn't here yet. Guess what its here. All the ban did was spook the markets even if the announcement wasn't full of errors. .

As far as the numbers go public health officials are flying blind. Connecticut's epidemiologist is estimating 10% of the population in the state could contract the virus in the next month. That's 357,000 people. Ohio's epidemiologist is estimating that 1% of the population currently has the virus. That's 117,000 people. For most people it's not a problem. Its a fever and a dry cough. For older people its totally different. That's my parents. They are both over 65. I have one grand parent left. Grandma is 95 and still lives at home. Great health for 95. I would hate to lose my last grandparent to a virus.
