No. 9 - The List: Top 10 Chicago songs...

In honor of their appearance in Austin on Saturday night, I pay homage to a group that far more of you see to like than I ever realized.

ConfessionL: I love the ballads.

Let's do this.

10. (I've Been) Searchin' So Long
9. Just You n' Me
8. Beginnings
7. Make Me Smile
6. Does Anyone Really Know
5. If You Leave Me Now
4. Hard to Say I'm Sorry
3. You're the Inspiration
2. 25 Or 6 To 4
1. Saturday in the Park

Chicago was a great band when they were still in their edgy, silly “let’s bring on the revolution phase” in the early 1970s. (Go look at their album liner notes from that era.) That encompasses albums from Chicago Transit Authority to Chicago V and songs 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8 above. Then they started to go “commercial” with VI and after that became good capitalists pumping out above average elevator music for the rock era. Having said that, few bands have had their staying power and their first two albums and especially II are top 10 GOAT material, and they’ve always put on a great live show.

Ou seems pretty damn stacked this year. That's why I cant pick Texas just yet to win the conference. In a year where Texas is supposed to be pretty good on paper, there are a lot of question marks on defense. Meanwhile, OU probably has three all American level players on offense and a much better defense than last year. At least on paper. And a QB that's won a national title. That offense won't be as potent as last year but it wont be far off. That running game is the difference. Texas just doesnt come close to that production.

I think Texas will be a better team than last year if they can find a running game to make up for the yards after contact that LJH gave the team in 2018, many times saving drives at crucial times. Its gonna be a dog fight but I think OU has better coaching where it counts in the big 12, on offense. Their system is the best in college football hands down.

But more than all that, can Sam stay healthy for an entire season? Moreover, if he gets hurt will he be limited like last year for a few games?

That's the biggest key for me. If he can I like UTs chances
I don't know that OU will be better. They lose a LOT off their O-line and their receiving core will be less experienced and they won't have a wisp of smoke at the QB position. We'll see as the season progresses but Jalen Hurts is nowhere near the threat at QB that Baker and Kyler were IMO.

Cool commercial besides "Not only the best female soccer team, but the best soccer team in the world."

Why do they have to say things like that, that are obviously not close to being true, in any universe? People will watch that commercial and focus on that, instead of the truths that it talks about. /rant.

that commercial was extremely annoying
that voice

it was just emotion...very little content

so perfect for Rapinoe tint based ad

4 of Rapinoe's 6 goals were free kicks ...again light on content ...strong on results

one of her two "earned" goals was against Thailand to put the U.S. ahead 9 - 0.
When questioned about piling it on she responded "Wah Wah Wah "

truly all class

the fact that she repeatedly drew attention to herself, away from the teams accomplishments and against others was classless

of course we will never get to realize the depths of her comments ,or the sheer lack of any foundational premise (see Kaepernick) because the unbiased "journalists" surrounding the event have already checked the box I'm in.

Congrats to the U.S. women's soccer team

now on to equal pay !

If A&M was the obvious choice for King, then why hasn't he pulled the trigger for them? Something with Aggy is preventing him from doing so...maybe just the fact that it's A&M and having to live in college station for 4 years with those weirdos. I dunno.

I wish LSU had shown more interest in him because that is probably where he really wanted to go presumably with his father being from La.
I could not be happier with our combination of Card/Jackson. That is really a talented duo.

VARsil didn't win shiat!! Argentina was robbed plan and simple. Even Rivaldo - Brazilian great said Argentina was screwed by the refs versus VARsil. So no... VARsil didn't win anything in my eyes .... and I live in VARsil!!!

BTW... people here in VARsil are dumb!!! If they think Cebolinha is a better option than Neymar they are dumber than I thought. Neymar is one of the top 5 players in the world... and thank god he is going back to join the MSN in Barça.

Visca Barça!!

Chupa VARsil!!!

It’s difficult to define any list of “greatest” songs. But here are my personal top 10 “favorites” by Chicago, in no particular order. I have an obvious preference for the early studio albums.

Beginnings
Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?
I’m a Man
Introduction
Ballet For a Girl in Buchannon
Listen
Dialogue Pt1 & 2
Sing a Mean Tune Kid
State of the Union
Free

I didn't think I had ever heard a Chicago song before reading this column. I went over to Spotify and realized that I had heard 1 or 2 of them, but always attributed the songs to other artists.

Strange that their stuff isn't as popular with my generation as much as other similar bands like Journey or Bon Jovi.

I would contend that's not the No.1 ballad and none of the Chicago Top songs articles I used to help me make sure I didn't miss anything obvious never mentioned the song near the top of their rankings.

You have to understand that OB is very much pro-Terry Kath and anti-Cetera.

She made the decision to not stand for a National Anthem. You're on the NATIONAL team...that's beyond disrespectful. You want to do it on a professional sports team, have fun it's your money. For a National Team? No
Three quick thoughts...

a. The video of her talking about the White House was months old when it came out. It wasn't like she made the comments in the middle of the World Cup. It was an off the cuff comment made months ago.

b. She has stood for the anthem throughout the tournament. It's that she's not singing that is apparently the problem for some, which feels very much like forced propaganda at this point. It's always something.

c. In general, I wish people cared 1/10 for the reasons why she kneeled as they care for her not kneeling. Maybe then we wouldn't have as many black men dying at the hands of the police.

Happy Man was a great but semi unknown Chicago song from back in the day before Peter Cetera left the band. I was introduced to it by one of the most cheerful and positive girlfriends I ever had and that song always lifts my day. In the massive library of their hits I get that it didn't make the Ketch top 10 list but do yourself a favor and listen to it sometime soon especially if you're having a rough day...
will do!

Really nice write-up. Only disagreement with Chicago list is "Color My World". Heard it recently and I had forgotten how good it was when I was growing up listening to Chicago.

Totally agree about Card. 100% agree. Some posters have downplayed him for some reason, and I watch his film repeatedly and wonder what they are seeing. He can sling it all over the field, accurately, and he can scramble and run like a true elite DT QB.

His film actually reminds me a little of Manziel. Not the headcase jerkwad part (Card is a grounded leader at Lake Travis), but what Manziel did on the field winning the Heisman and coming close again.

Actually surprised at how similar their physical play on HS film is. I don't care where Card came from, he's an elite HS QB, and that was as a junior. I love JQJ, and would not write him off if he improves his passing mechanics and gets more accurate, but he can help us at several positions, and Card is a natural born QB (regardless of playing one season at WR).

Anyway, I agree he probably starts in 2021. He's a stud. Congratulations on his performance at the Elite 11.

Also 100% agree about Ehlinger, but that's a pretty easy call to me. He proved himself last year and should be elite this year.

Good read.
Thanks! Good post, yourself.;)

Not sure how you can predict Texas wins the conference when you have so many Sooners in your all-conference defense- wow that blows my mind after how much struggling the Sooner did most of last season.
When push comes to shove in the Big 12 title game, give me the team with the better quarterback.

Let's see a top five. He sure as hell ain't in my current top five.

I'm giving myself a pass.

I merely answered the issues brought up in the thread.

I'm not sure many of you would truly like to hear me. You might be different, but the majority don't want to hear it. It makes them mad/uncomfortable/mad. I sure as shit am not going to the Corral.

Story, but take it to the corral

For instance, this post was made 10 1/2 hours ago. No one responded that he should take it to the Corral.

Just my response...

I agree and I hope that for once we have a true running game where we don't have to rely on Sam all the time. We seriously need to limit his designed runs even if they are effective. I'd like to see us open up the offense more and air it out. We have the weapons. That will open up the running game even more.

I find it interesting that none of the other comments/responses that are politically themed have been given the same responses.
Your comment was the most controversial. Here's a different perspective:

In my personal but respectful opinion, you damage your brand when you insist on promoting your own leftist, political positions. Your opinions on sports and writing on sports are top notch.

Well, that's just horseshit!

It's the same thing with the Doobie Brothers. Pro-Tom Johnston while anti-Michael McDonald. I thought your list was solid but should have left off the honorable mention part. ;)

@Ketchum if I am reading your Card stuff correctly, is it fair to say he will be our second best QB prospect signed since VY?

Your comment was the most controversial. .
That's a matter of perspective, I suppose.

What you're saying is that you and many others support one view, which translates to you ignoring it in the context of this conversation, while applying a different set of rules for the comment you find "controversial".

Texas has signed a bunch of national top 100 types, but not a lot of top 25 types.

Off the top of my head, only Gilbert was that type of prospect.

Rose Lavelle was probably the best or second best player for the US the entire World Cup. Rapinoe scored on PKs and wonderful passes. Lavelle’s goal today was self created and a total money shot. She was better than Rapinoe and Morgan and there with Heath and Ertz.
Lavelle was nails all tournament long. She doesn't have the looks of Morgan or the social flash of Rapinoe but she is money! Love her and Heath's 1v1 skills.

He can’t help himself. He has a narrative and isn’t budging. The ignorance of the broad brush “police killing black men” narrative is one of Ketch’s favorite cards and it is ridiculous.
