Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (How many transfers is too many?)

Without the 25-man yearly limit what will be the new topics for your roughly 2 dozen columns per year on the subject of mathematics? In nearly all seriousness though, it sounds like college football rosters will be the same as the NFL. Each team can add wheat and shed the chaff every year; more or less the Saban model, isn't it?

Since you struggle with counting, maybe "two dozen" is what you need, old man.

I long ago checked out on foolish spin such as “upside” when describing every single 3-star or low 4-star we signed particularly over the last few recent years. I go back and read commit threads such as those when Abiara and can’t help but laugh at attempts to spin a 5.6 3 star into an unpolished gem.
It's never going to sink in for some.

So you couldn’t think of one other thing to make the lede? I can think of one. Lol.

The Rose fight was horrible. So bad that the commentary team stopped analyzing the fight and just started making comparisons to the worst fights in history.

Canelo now needs to know his role. Stay down in the kids divisions. You aren’t Superman.
I'm closer to the story you want written, but there's a downside to it and I wasn't ready for that angst.

Maybe the goal was to cash the check and get out of Dodge?
You make more way more money with the championship and pay per view percentage points, which she can kiss goodbye after this one

IMO she was scared of the takedown from her first fight with Carla and which made her unwilling to engage. Judges defaulted to octagon control as part of the scoring criteria since NOTHING happened.

Born in the USA still gets me - comes across as a pop-style hit. American flag type song - and then you get older and hear the lyrics…

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just coverin' up

damn thing is a brilliant on multiple levels. Takes an artist to deliver the message that uses a pop-style hook and subverts the message with the lyrics to deliver a real message. As the son of a Vietnam vet who was also laid off from the big three auto makers in the 70s, this song is just a brilliant commentary of what happens to a lot of this folks.

ps - did you know he took this title from the Michael J Fox and Joan Jett film Light of Day? Wrote them a song in exchange for title.
I did not know last point,

It always gets me when Born in the USA gets sung at political conventions. It's like they just hear the hook and have never bothered with the lyrics.

I thought it was an excellent article but want to quibble about, “He was hired to be a head coach and create a bad-ass offense.”

He was hired to win championships. That means creating a bad-ass offense AND defense. His talent and experience are in creating offense, of course, but he’ll be fired some day if his defense fails.

If we will only be as strong as our weakest link and that is at LB and pass rushing, Sark hasn’t excelled at roster management. I know he tried to get LBs and Mathis, but the failure to shore up those positions will hurt.
fair point.

I see, but Only 29 y/0 with 17 fights I’d doubt it. Her husband/cornerman Pat Berry telling her between rounds “You’re the best, the boo’s are because you’re doing what you supposed to” was the most potato corner work I’ve seen this year. All the while taking precious seconds of oxygen from the actual UFC Coach of the Year Trevor whittman who was trying to get her to engage. Bizarre relationship they have

Just a bad style matchup and mental block from getting pounded out and submitted by Carla in 2014

Brutal. Your descriptions are cringe-worthy.

Not on this list created by Boss fans.

That’s all well and good but I stand by my point. It’s the common trap of these lists for people to go out of their way to leave off the obvious answers.

Musically, “I’m on Fire,” “Born in the USA,” and “Glory Days” are some of his simplest and least ambitious songs so I get it. Maybe you should have thrown in some honorable mentions. 😉

100% on hoping Earl gets help. Not sure if the problem is alcohol, drugs, CTE/mental health, but anyone who watched his infrequent Instagram posts over the last 5-6 years, saw ET go from a dedicated family man, to someone who clearly has some demons, or at the least, is in a dark place. I hope he gets the help he needs, first of all, to once again become the leader of his family, where he is not having to face legal battles to see his kids. I know he used to be on here. Prayers up for ET.
praying ET gets help and doesn't hurt anyone before he does. Sad to see one of my favorite Horns who till recently didn't seem to get into any of this drama. Maybe I didn't notice but, during his time in Austin nor his first few years in Seattle I don't ever remember reading one negative thing about him

If it was that obvious, it wouldn't have been missed. ;)

FYI, I'm on fire came in at 21 on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Boss songs of all-time, as voted by the experts at the magazine.

“I’m on Fire” is one of his most intimate songs. And it’s not claiming any high ground. It’s about fundamental deep-seated desire. The drums are played with a cross stick [on the snare]. He says, “I’m on fire,” but he lets all this muscular playing fall away. The performance has its own power. It’s something that exists in him. It’s just there. And it’s astonishing to see somebody who relied that much on physical power to let the music and his voice be understated like this. It’s a great moment.

“My Hometown” [on this album] is the same thing. It’s the same thing that had begun to happen in “Atlantic City” – beginning to recognize that you’re in this place with all of these other people, that where you’re from will always be with you.

It’s the reverse of “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run.” It’s growing up. That had to happen. You couldn’t go on being the outsider, rejecting everybody, believing that redemption only existed under the hood of his car. And at this point, his descriptive prowess is in full force. “I’m on Fire” is a beautifully, economically drawn picture. He has this ability to say so much in very few words."

I just think some of you are having your eyes opened to the sausage making for the first time. There's been a pretend game of amateurism that people have played with for way too long that hasn't existed in a long time,.

Think a lot of us have been curious/fascinated about the process, kind of nice/refreshing for it to be more out in the open now.

I’ve been thinking something must have happened.

I wonder what the upside is in writing a piece that questions the ranking viability of a potential savior of the program.

When I say the quiet parts out loud, people get mad.

I wasn't ready for that today.

@Ketchum

If it was me I'd be taking 8-15 high school kids per year / the upper end being if we really got back to being elite and got things rolling again.

But even then if you're turning over 30 kids per year / at least half of them and even as high as 20-22 of them should be transfers

Maybe the goal was to cash the check and get out of Dodge?
But giving up the belt to do so. It was like watching a football game where both teams just run the same handoff that goes nowhere over and over and punt, then it goes to overtime and someone hits a FG because they got gifted the 25 yard line…and it was for the championship.

My issue is that it's probably unreasonable in most years to get 15 upper end.

Texas had a top 5 class in 2022, but we have to count a bunch of mid four stars to help us get to 10 HS takes in the class.

Well it’s been a quiet part in my mind for a couple years so I’m done meditating on it. Haha. But I know exactly what you mean. Still, the mail has to be delivered.

That'll leave a mark.

RE #9 (Top 10 Boss songs), several points:
  • I'm not crazy about "Born in the USA," but given its historical context -- including being completely misunderstood by Pres. Reagan -- I'll accept it at 10.
  • Can't see how you left off "Dancing in the Dark" (Boss's highest charting song -- #2 after Prince) and "Promised Land."
  • Adam-Cain doesn't belong on that list.
  • OK, I'm a soft touch for "Blinded by the Light" -- the 1st cut on Boss's 1st CD hooked me. His only song to reach #1 (but by Manfred Mann, ugh).
  • Although I can't put it on the list, "Moonlight Motel" is one of the most heartbreaking and subtly-played songs Bruce has performed.
  • Speaking of performances, "The Ghost of Tom Joad," live with Tom Morello on guitar, is mind-blowing.

Also, you can blame the piece on me. Idgaf.

* It just feels like Born in the USA has to make a top 10. It's the song the mainstream identifies him with the most.

* I like Dancing in the Drak, but it feels like such a pop song that I almost cringed that I had it in my top 15.

* Adam-Cain is just a personal choice, I suppose. It ****ing jams.

From a write-up in RSM: " “Adam Raised a Cain” is a pile driver, featuring a remarkably heavy groove and some of Springsteen’s most searing guitar work. The bitter lyrics (partially inspired by Elia Kazan’s 1955 film East of Eden) give father-son tension an almost biblical depth: “You’re born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else’s past,” he sings. Before his death in 1998, the elder Springsteen was asked which of his son’s songs he liked best. “The ones about me,” he answered."
