Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Beyond the point of no return...)

The health concerns are the primary issues I'm told.

i thought having his guys would help take the stress off of him. But the main question is this...if he asked UT to give him until January, is that a possibility?

I think the drinking stuff is slander that doesn't seem based in reality considering I've been told that he quit drinking many months ago.

The Eyes stuff? Wake up and see what really happened IMO.

Alienating donors? Yeah, that's true.

The drinking stuff is real. Level 1 several times. The Eyes doesn’t fit your narrative so I get why you won’t be objective about what happened. The arrogance has not only manifested itself in work and with donors but with recruits and others - see Brockermeyers. The other stuff is more personal and not worth airing on a message board. Bottom line, he is a mess and can’t perform at a level to put up with his issues.

That just doesn’t make sense to me. If health is the primary concern, why is this dragging out so long? That should be an easy no. It just sounds like an excuse.

Do we really think he is going back and forth every day wondering if he is healthy enough? Come on man. I know you’re smarter than that.

Agreed.

The entire concept of retaining Herman because a guaranteed improvement is not available is, as you outlined, asinine. I can not understand the logic behind it at all.

The Texas administration is either:
1. Penny smart and dollar foolish (revenue will drop dramatically)
2. Ok with mediocrity in perpetuity (recruiting is tanking)
3. Incredibly weak and risk averse (scared of making a bad hire?! Any warm body is better at this point because Herman is clearly not the guy)
4. All of the above

Pathetic.

Hard to believe we think of ourselves as “big brother” to aggy at this point. 🤦‍♂️

So Herman is a bad guy, but you’ve been drinking with him several times? You’re full of shit.

So called recruiting chops...
That would be my first guess too, but Cristobal so far is just the updated version of Mack Brown: he wins a lot more in February than he does in November.

Campbell may or may not be great at landing 5-star recruits once he's hired at a top-tier program, but he can develop 3 and 4 star players like few others. And those guys make up the bulk of your roster.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's not just 18-year old 5 stars that like being courted and being made to feel special.

I am not watching this saga play out all day long, so forgive my misses here or there. However, I have a theory.

At the end of the day, CDC and the admn decided to begin the coaching search in plain daylight after the loss to IA St. Mistake #1 by CDC. Should have been done in more of a stealth mode.

After some initial interest from UM, CDC and his cronies lost their minds and could not keep the information to themselves. Again, allowing word to get out in plain daylight versus keeping in stealth mode. Mistake #2 by CDC. Never count your chickens until they are hatched.

While UM was truly interested, he and his family spent real time on it but at the end of the day he either got turned off by UT and/or his health played a major role in never expressing for sure interest. Mistake #3. CDC does not really know UM well enough and should have gotten to know him a lot better before allowing the information to spread out of control.

Now, you have a very unhappy and demotivated coaching staff who will probably run for better jobs after this season and a lame duck head coach. Mistake #4 by CDC. He is late (by a year) in understanding the short and long term ramifications of our recruiting failures and dysfunctional leadership skills from both himself and TH.

Last season I only cared about what TH was doing wrong. All of this season, the blame has fallen squarely on CDC because of his biggest mistake of extending TH's contract at the wrong time. CDC has placed the school's revenues at risk for potentially years to come. He does not understand change management, communications and planning.

Isn't his contract up after 2022? Other schools are going to negative recruit the heck out of that. Also I believe they will tell kids he was almost fired last year so he will always be on the hot seat unless he gets an extension. Maybe I am wrong.

I am not sure an extension will help that, plenty of other things to negatively recruit against us. Also, any extension will be done with a buy-out change which will prove it was just done for recruiting which means we have ultimately have no confidence in TH.

I'm a bit surprised that Cristobal would rank ahead of Campbell.

Any ideas on why that might be?
^ Personal relationships.
That makes sense, but it would be a very dangerous way of going about a Plan B hire.

We need to get the best P5 or NFL candidate available, not the best guy CDC knows.

I agree completely. Saban wasn’t considered an elite recruiter until he went to Bama. He turned them around within 2 years and recruits began to notice...Campbell would get his fair share of recruits bc he’s respected, can develop and win.

So Herman is a bad guy, but you’ve been drinking with him several times? You’re full of shit.

Not me. Several people in Austin who have been with him. You my friend are a fraud. When you have something other than opinions to contribute feel free to jump in. Until then, keep your bad takes to yourself.

Yup. When I am recruiting someone of importance I get to know them first and make sure I know what will be required outside of compensation. I connect culturally and personally before making them an offer. I make sure they want to be here first. $$ are always last. If you lead the $$, you will risk recruiting failure after failure.

The downside of Franklin is limited because he can recruit like a boss. Big time. Just give him a budget for top coordinators and he will do a lot better than Herman.
What have his recruiting rankings at PSU looked like? too lazy to look myself tbh.

Unfortunately, that sounds more plausible than this is a smokescreen to give Urban time to get his guys after tOSU's season. Wow. Complete implosion.

So, let me get this straight, the reason everyone is suddenly pessimistic is because the timing isn’t right? Haven’t we been told the whole time that Urban controls the timing? Something just isn’t adding up.

Also it’s funny that no one is reporting a no. Just that they don’t feel good about it. And no one ever reported they do feel good about it. The only consistent facts I’ve seen are:

1. Texas made a badass offer.
2. Health and family will be deciding factors.
3. Urban is dictating timing.
4. Everyone involved is tight lipped and there’s no info to come by. Especially on the Meyer side which is the side everyone is waiting on.

So after reporting that no one really knows anything, now all of a sudden everyone “feels” something?

Edit: Also, we’ve gone from everyone on the same page, Texas finally acting like Texas to no one has a clue or a Plan B, same ol’, same ol’? Again, something not adding up.
This. All 3 UT sites reporting the same thing about Urban at the same time and citing sources on the UT side. Is this Texas trying to create any type of leverage and telling Urban to sh*t or get off the pot?

I told someone today, the anger will turn from Herman to Del Conte. I don't believe Texas admin believes that to be the case. We'll see.

IF, and I don't think the question has been 100% answered yet, but IF CDC had...

1) an Urban or bust mentality with no near certainty as to the outcome of that pursuit AND
2) no good outright backup/fallback plan
then he is a straight up ****ing idiot clown who has no business being the AD at UT.

He absolutely cannot act like he has since the summer, and like he has during this season, if he has even an inkling that he's bringing Tom back for next year. CDC could have hoped for a super season that would allow him to cover the warts and that was right there for the taking this year with this roster, this QB, and this conference. But that option was gone with the wind after TCU and the OU debacle. So at that point, CDC should have had back doors to Urban open and BEFORE THIS EVER BECAME AN ISSUE IN THE PUBLIC EYE....BEFORE THE GAME DAY ANNOUNCERS TALKED ABOUT NEEDING TO SHIT OR GET OFF THE POT....CDC should have had the Urban answer in hand. If the answer was going to be no, then work on the plan B, which could have been a different coach or could have been bringing Tom back. But if bringing Herman back was going to be a legit option, you CAN'T EFFING ABANDON/MARGINALIZE HIM. It seems pretty clear if today's news holds true that CDC did not know Urban's answer before all of this started and he had no viable plan B. So now we get to look at him standing there with his pants down. He SEEMS to have made this about as bad as it could be (if today's tree leaves are true).

I'm so tired of watching incompetent leadership at this University. No one can argue that we've had a good decade from a Football, Baseball, Basketball, or wBBall perspective. Those are the four most important sports, and we've been middling at best for 10 YEARS at this University. That is 100% unacceptable, and today just seems like more of the same. I've already emailed CDC and I'm pondering an email to KE, whom I"ve met a few times and really like. We all have to say enough is enough. Whether or not you think Herman should be coaching here next year, CDC has already poisoned that option beyond repair (with obvious help from Herman). Let him know it.

Level 1 is the man himself, and you’re still full of shit.

Loos lips have sunk multiple ships the last 3 weeks. Its a major problem for the team, the coaches and future recruits. So, now if we dont land UM, we look even worse if that is possible.
