Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (It's all about Sam for me... again...)

Ketch: damn Liverpool is impressive right now. They are making a serious run at being unbeatable.

Watched Parasite this week as well (unfortunately on a plane but will see it again in a theater this week), and a couple of things stood out:
1. Outstanding screenplay. It was easily the most creative and surprising non-adapted story this year.
2. Take the screenplay and add the fact that the film is in Korean, so you have an additional reliance on the cinematography and direction. That really speaks to what a great job Bong Joon-ho did at pulling that together.
3. Multi-layered messages and visual metaphors, so the film hangs with you after watching it -- a lot to think about. Compare that to "Once Upon a Time . . " that I also loved, there were a bunch of scenes that may have looked great but did not serve the story. Great to look at, sure. Actors you like in cool, retro setting, check. In Parasite, every scene served the whole.
totally agree.

As it stands, Texas fans only really acknowledge one rival that it plays each year. That's kind of boring.
It’s kind of real is what it is. I don’t want to be boring, but no other game gets my blood racing. It’s not something you can fake and just generate with stats and recent turmoil. Baylor is still JAG. #3 rival or #10, not matter, as Mr. Miyagi would say.

I consider Baylor a rival, but only in the arch-nemesis category of a good (UT) vs. evil (Baylor). After mistakenly starting at the "other" school, I was at UT between '86 and '89. Not stellar years for the Horns, but I grew to revile Baylor during that period and to the present because they were cheating sacks of sh!t. Back in the day, you could always count on 7 to 14 points in Baylor's favor caused by the incredibly weighty thumbs on the scales by the refs. My hatred of Baylor was only increased with their stint as Rape U. So, I would say, at least in my own mind, I consider Baylor a rival, but more, as you said, in a hatred sort of way. I had to bite my tongue this weekend, when my best friend told me that his daughter would be attending there in the Fall. Hopefully their lackadaisical attitude toward protecting women has changed.

This kind of hate seems to be in line with the way folks involved in Alabama/Auburn think about each other.

Hard pass on 6. Texas isnt nba minor league. fire shaka immediately

I agree, and we can all thank DeLoss for that situation. Imagine how much fun playing LSU, OU, Arky and aggy every year would be if our administration would just suck it up and join the SEC in 2025. Pure fan nirvana.

No no no on #6.

That is like saying - we are destined to always suck at Men's basketball and thus the most interesting thing we can do is show case one and done guys.

We need to try once again to fix this problem and under no circumstances should we put off starting that process for another year.

Sam's QBR in the Baylor, Iowa State and TCU losses is stunningly bad. It really brings home the point that we needed a change in offensive coaching staff. There is no excuse for those numbers against those teams with the talent we had on the offensive side of the ball in 2019.

I was at the Texas Iowa State game Saturday. The Erwin Center was half full. And the team does head scratching stuff. They dont play smart most of the time
And, before we wax too eloquently about beating Iowa State, both teams look like bottom dwellers to me. Each team has some talent but look erratic and disorganized especially on offense.

The basketball fanbase would be more upset at 3-0 over the next 3 games, then going 0-3??"

So, 3-3 over the next 6 games?

What did you think about the 2008-09 Texas offensive lines?

absolute dog crap. I should have stayed that we haven’t had a good line since 2006. That said, if you are hinting that Sam needs to be 2008 Colt for this team to be great, 9 regular season wins will be our ceiling, because I don’t think Sam has that accuracy in him.

the dodo is a great youtube channel. lots and lots of fun videos

I always considered Baylor a bigger rival than Tech. About the same, but I guess I'll never forget Baylor winning in Waco in 1974 and ending Texas streak of 6 straight SWC championships. And from that point on we lost in Waco every time except 1982 and 1990.

It changed in the beginning of the Big 12 when the uptick in competition, our hiring Mack Brown, and Baylor hiring 3 straight terrible HC's created a huge separation between us and them. But our slippage and them hiring Briles and Rhule closed that gap. I absolutely think its a pretty good rivalry, and has been for most of the last 35 years.

Tech is a good rivalry, but they are a notch lower on the ladder, in my opinion. We never had the trouble winning in Lubbock that we did / have in Waco. You can argue that the most crushing regular season loss in the past 30 years (outside of OU) was losing at Tech in 2008...but we are 8-2 in Lubbock since 2000, and were 8-7 in Lubbock from 1970 to 1998. Tech has also never won a conference title.

I hate Baylor with a passion, when I watched the referees screw Texas in order to give Grant his win, I started hating Baylor.
Then when I got back to my car someone had taken a big rock and bashed the driver side door.
I blamed myself because I had left a Texas hat in the back window.
You would have thought that stealing the game would have been enough but they had to vandalize my car.
I agree on Sam. Due to the injuries to the defense I think that there was so much pressure on Sam to score on every series that he and Herman got way too conservative. JMO.
All that and neither one of us was worth a damn in 1992.

Atwater and Woodson are equally worthy of the HOF in my opinion. Woodson won’t be far behind.

As someone that didn't watch a minute of UT's win over Iowa State this weekend, I can certifiably admit to being a part of the "Shaka Smart has killed my taste for Texas basketball" Club.

Yet, if I'm being completely honest ... I have to pass along a thought that I had this weekend.

I want to see Greg Brown play basketball for the Longhorns to such an extent that I'd probably trade another season of Shaka if it meant that I got to see Brown's freak show for a single season in person.

There ... I said it. I don't like myself for saying it, but I've said it.

I guess I don't understand how the mind of a 17-year old kid works, but the question running around in my head is why will Brown only come to Texas if Shaka is still there? If I'm a high school senior bad ass basketball player, I would be more excited about going to Texas if they got a new coach rather than keeping one of the worst coaches in program history.

Why Shaka is a must-have for Brown to come to Texas, I'll never understand that mindset.

1) Baylor as a #3 rival... who cares? Who is OU's or Bama's or anyone's 3rd rival? But I'd still choose Tech because they've ripped our hearts out more than Baylor since I've been a fan.

2) I just want to see Texas basketball win. I don't understand wanting losses to fire the coach.

3) God I hope Brady goes to Oakland. I'm a Brady hater and I'd love to see him get his ass handed to him for a change.

4) Any red-blooded man who watched the halftime show and only gives it a B- is the kind of guy who gets aroused by librarian porn. Dude.

Yes, an improved set of coaching around Sam is critical.
How about we blow an air horn to stop the play 3 sec after we snap the ball in practice? Sam needs to learn to get the ball out of his hands faster. That will take pressure off of the oline and the wrs should work harder to get open more quickly if they believe the ball is going to be there as soon as they come out of their breaks. Also establishing a strong running game and play action passing could make our offense dominant and keep the defense off the field and allow them to play more aggressively and with more energy when they are out there. I hated the bend but don't break defense that saw every qb we faced having career highs in yardage. I hope this year they cover better and make the qbs less comfortable in the pocket. If Coburn can drop about 20 lbs of bad weight, he could have a breakout season.

I suppose the question I would ask is this ... what would have to happen for Baylor to actually register as an actual "rival" moving forward?
I don't think it will happen on our side until we play Baylor 2 or 3 times with the conference championship on the line (or at least both sides going into the game with no more than one loss). For the most part, Baylor sucked when Mack was on a roll and we sucked when Briles was on a roll.

I'm just expressing that if your quarterback play is at a certain level, all kinds of sins can be washed away.

The passer efficiency rating is a good stat, but not as comprehensive in evaluating a QB as you seem to believe.

Among other factors, the passer efficiency rating fails to evaluate:

- the QB’s running and scrambling skills
- the number of fumbles lost by the QB
- the number of interceptions that were Hail Mary throws at the end of the half or game
- the difficulty of the D the QB is facing (I refer you to Mahomes against SF in the Super Bowl)
- the caliber of protection afforded by the O-Line and the pass rush pressure on the QB
- the caliber of route-running and receiving skills of the receivers
- the brilliance or ineptitude of the offensive scheme
- the caliber of play-calling

In the context of the challenges facing Sam, he performed brilliantly in his junior season, despite his passer efficiency rating climbing only slightly over his sophomore season. For example, how many fumbles did Sam lose during the 13-game, 2019 season? ZERO. That’s efficient. Sam now has 1 lost fumble in the past 2 seasons encompassing 27 games.

Sam had 4 excellent, reliable receivers in 2018, Lil Jordan, CJ, Devin and Andrew Beck. For most of the 2019 season he had only 1, Duvernay. The offensive scheme was vanilla and the play-calling too often predictable. The receivers failed to consistently gain separation. Probably half or more of Sam’s completions were dimes to well-covered receivers. Often, with everyone covered, Sam was forced to scramble, take a sack or throw it away. While Joe Burrow often had 5-6 seconds to find an open receiver, Sam was usually under intense pressure from a heavy pass rush.

2 of Sam’s 10 picks in 2019 were desperation throws that didn’t hurt the team.

Would most top college coaches be thrilled with their QB producing 32 TD passes against 8 picks and ZERO fumbles...and with superb scrambling and tough, chain-moving running?

If during the 2020 season the Horn offensive scheme, route running, O-Line pass blocking and play-calling improve, and Sam stays healthy, the Horns will thrive and win. which is all Sam really focuses on.

Oh, his efficiency rating should look pretty good too.

It's a non-confirmation biased number. It isn't opinion-based. It's the same for all.

Is it perfect?

Of course, not, but it is opinion free.
