Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (The underwhelming-ness of it all...)

There are lots I don't like about the offense. Personnel groupings are weird, play calling is wildly inconsistent. But it seems like we give lip service to the O-Line fiasco and then bash the QB and coaches for terrible offense.

Anyone that watched the first team D manhandle the second team O in the Spring Game knew that we had NOTHING behind a starting O-Line that was (no better than) solid to begin with. That's what was so laughable about those 9 and 10 win season predictions. 1 or 2 O-Line injuries were going to sink this season (and we've had WAY more than 1 or 2.)

But honestly, I'm shocked we've been in every game this year with our O-Line troubles. And when we stop playing top 10 teams the week after ISU beats them, we'll stack up enough wins for everyone to get excited about next year.
EXACTLY!! ISU has exposed what could have done the weeks before OU and TCU and then they corrected it.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Not sure if you're agreeing with me, but you know as well as anyone skipping out on Jerod Evans at the time was criminal.

Even if a new guy can't win the job, we need a QB stopgap badly even if it all it does is put separation between Ehlinger and Rising.

with a losing record, we can't even get to mediocrity at this point in the season.
with kansas and tech, we could certainly become bowl eligible. if so, that doesnt even get us to relevancy.
things were bad as coach mack reached the twilight yrs of his coaching career. 5-6 win seasons back then would be unfathomable. now,it's the norm.
sad times indeed

I just don't understand why we are so bad when our roster, including OL, has so many 4 stars from prior years and we constantly get beat by programs such as TCU, Maryland and Okie State who live off of 3 stars. I do not understand.

Some of it is bad evaluations, some of it is bad luck with injuries, but the biggest culprit is the lack of continuity. There isn't an offensive player on this team that has had the same coordinator for consecutive years. Hell, most of them haven't even had a position coach for consecutive years. They need time in the same system, being taught the same fundamentals and techniques by the same coaches. The kids have never had a chance to really work on getting better, they are constantly having to learn new systems from new coaches that are asking them to do things differently in different terminology.

No, he said "next week" would be optimistic, meaning that it would be optimistic for him to return for Kansas, which means that we're talking the final two games of the season after having not had football activities for two months.

He also said they'd have to wait and see when it came to a return in another week.

If he's truly healthy and ready to play then it would be nice to have him back, but hopefully we're not rushing him back at the risk of his health for 1 or 2 almost meaningless games (plus maybe a meaningless bowl). I know I'm asking you to essentially speculate, but what's your take on this?

Please stop all the negativity. Everybody's frustrated, but it's totally self-destructive to keep ragging on a team that has shown a lot of heart against one of the toughest schedules in the country. We have a potentially powerhouse recruiting class for 2018 that just needs a few key pieces to be one of the two or three best in Texas' history. If we can fix the offensive line, the future for Texas could be exceedingly bright. With just a little bit of luck and a few more key plays, we could be 7-2 instead of 4-5. Any ass**** can criticize and second-guess. It takes much more to be a leader and a winner and part of the solution rather than part of the problem. If encouraged just slightly, potential top recruits could see that they could be the difference-maker in a team that could easily be 9-3 instead of 6-6, and headed for a return to Texas' glory days. I'm getting very tired of all the whining losers on this website.

I think your points are valid. Not exactly sure how many scholarships we have to offer next year to Juco but OL has to be a priority. They know it. Trust me, everything that I heard today screams that they know it.

Agree. In addition to Juco players, high-level recruits would work (national top-fifty types). I'm talking immediate difference makers. Admittedly, there aren't many of those, but we hired Herman with the expectation that he recruit in the stratosphere with Myer and Saban. And, we need more than just offensive lineman. Another QB, for example, would be a good idea, especially if Sam goes on a year-long concussion protocol and Shane remains very injury-prone (and I think he will).

Miami is too low at #8. Having seen them live against Virginia Tech, that's a really good team. Notre Dame might get them, but Miami is still better than Wisconsin and probably TCU.

No. 3 – I said it a week ago ...

You can't be too safe when it comes to concussions. I don't care what anyone says, three days of concussion-free symptoms opening the door for a return to football is simply not responsible and I feel emboldened in making the comment after hearing Tom Herman confirm that Sam Ehlinger suffered complications from his concussion issues from the last two weeks AFTER he was cleared to resume football activities.

Count me in the crowd that believes that Ehlinger should be shut down for the rest of the season, so that he can have a full year to get right before testing the waters in another full-contact setting. Let him get right and put him in a position where he can truly put this behind him with some time on his side. The risk just isn't worth the reward in any capacity at this point.

I don't care if the doctors clear him because they've been getting this wrong for decades and they seemingly got it wrong again last week.
@JinSOTEX Did your head just explode? Let’s hear your defense of the sideline doctors again.

I just don't see Conner Williams coming back next year. I also don't think we have a bunch of scrubs. I would certainly like more depth, but Kerstetter, Vahe, Shack, McMillon/Hudson, Okafor/Hudson doesn't sound bad to me with Rodriguez being a versatile swing guy. Let's hope that another guy or two develops a bit, but I'm not too frightened here.

Tell me where all these 4 stars are on our O line right now? Against TCU, we had a JUCo 2 star at lest tackle, a 4 star LG, a a low 3 center, a concerted d llinemsn at RG, and a 3 star true freshman at RT. This notion that the o line is littered with 4 and 5 stars that are under developed is just not true. It’s full of young players that also weren’t highly ranked. High ranked guys all transferred; D James, Raulerson, Delance

Mediocre players being poorly coached is a recipe for disaster.
Herman has been a huge disappointment once the season started. From his poor game management (passing up field goals in no brainer kicking situations), to seeming lack of adjustments to deal with personnel changes, the offense, for which he was hired to fix, has been possibly the worst I have seen since the late 80’s.
All the off the field stuff TH did prior to the season has now been relegated in my mind to a joke. UT football is a laughingstock. $10,000 lockers, social media bombardment, constant national media interviews, how about you go out and win a damn game!!!
5-7 or 6-6 is a ridiculous record.
For the first time in my life of 49 years, I didn’t watch or listen to any of our game last Saturday despite ample opportunities to do so. There is just no ROI at this point.
You are right @Ketchum, this is painful.

Ketch, good read - encapsulates the frustrations of being a Texas fan.
The problem is our expectations are so much higher - and rightly so. In days of old, even when we had a so-so team, we would have a combo of a great player(s) with young talent that would be good next year. Now I see the young talent part, but no one that has been here showing their stuff. It gets frustrating for a fan - like a broken car that you have been working on for 7 years, we yearn to see it run again.

Bingo. My biggest fear is that our greatest enemy in this reboot is going to be stubborn arrogance. Love the Herman hire in a macro-sense, but I have a feeling he’s the type of guy who can’t stand to be wrong, and that has the potential to be very dangerous for any team/organization.
Agreed. Sometimes having the smartest guy in the room presents a different set of concerns than normal.

Exactly.

This is my issue. Everyone seems to be dumping the last 8 years of problems at Tom Herman’s feet.

8 years worth of problems and everyone wanted a quick fix despite the fact that this same roster went a blazing 16-21 over three years and got Charlie fired.

They were bad for a reason... and it wasn’t solely the coaching.

How can anybody not see this?
Most people do. It's just that the accumulation of those eight years has made people's patience very thin.

I’d bet Williams is still a first round pick junior film or not.
Name the last time an NFL team used a first round pick on a player whose only game film from his junior year wasn't good.

The question about Williams now is whether he's a bit of a byproduct of the offenses he played in during his first two seasons.

You let the air out of your kids balloons? Damn! You should at least let Anwar do that. He's really good at it.
I would never do that, but I think about it all the time.

I think Williams wants to play. I just don't like bringing a guy back with the dynamics in place.

I have my doubts.

interesting...

Just roll out with the same group, thinking Hudson and Rodriguez up-grade it....

Bold strategy, Cotton.

correct. I've written about it quite a bit.

Coaching has made a huge difference on defense. Why do we give the offensive coaching staff a pass (including Herman)?
For the same reasons most fans excused all of Charlie's critical mistakes in his first year.

Asking questions starts to crush the dream a little, like a little kid asking dad about the comments that Judy made at school about Santa Claus.

I did too. The offense needs to eliminate mistakes. The Manny Diaz defense is first rate. They beat VT up. We’ll know more after ND.

Hard Rock Stadium was really loud as well.
