Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend: Full steam ahead towards 2022

@Ketchum, you’ve been clear that the current narrative in the program is to blame the players. Isn‘t that about the only way to hold on to recruiting momentum? I mean, if they say the coaches and the program sucks, then what high level recruit wants to be part of that? All to say, that’s really their only choice of a narrative.

Oh, I tend to agree, but you can be accountable without saying you suck, no?

Are you saying Ewers could come but shouldn’t?

seems like next year could end up anywhere between Disaster II to lots better. Doubt we see Baylor type turn around.
I'm saying that he's at a top 5 program and surrounded by elite talent where he is. I wouldn't leave that to come to this version of Texas.

Sorry to say, but I think it is very obvious that Sarkisian is in way over his head. Seems like a nice guy, maybe too nice, but he does not show strength in dealing with adversity. It appears that he has that “what do I do now” look on his face damn near every time something bad happens on the field. He does not appear to have the respect of the team. With the record bad season he just lead us through, I believe we’ll know a helluva lot more about his strength when he makes decisions on which coaches to cut loose. The really sad part is that there is no reason to have hope that next year will bring some astonishing turnaround. It doesn’t look like he picked up any ideas from Saban about taking control of his team
His body language on the sideline could definitely be better.

@Ketchum not sure if you’ve ever seen The Score but that’s a solid DeNiro watch. With Brando and Edward Norton.

We getting Ewers?

It's a possibility.

I'm not sure I would do it if I were him.

Staying at OSU isn’t really an option for him.

He probably needs the combination of a glamour program and an open path to the starting job. I wonder how many choices that presents him? He and Sark seem like a match made of mutual need and some desperation.

Glamour programs tend to not have open paths particularly at QB. It’s how they remain glamourous. Stroud, right now, easily projects to be gone after next season. Ewers stays patient and he is in prime position to battle to replace him in spring ,23

1. The Longhorns have only two players that can play for anyone and six that register in mind as truly plus-players as of this very minute. Of the six, three are back-ups to Bijan Robinson.
With this in mind, how would you prioritize needs for the off-season? Specifically when you think about trying to find immediate help via impact players from the transfer portal? As much as we need OL help, it is the LB ranks and DB room that scare me to death. We lose 3/4 starting LB and all of our DBs from a defense that has under performed. And, we clearly need a plus QB, quality WR depth, an edge rusher, etc. It will put a lot of pressure on the limited transfer slots, particularly when you consider how little of an impact transfers have historically had on the starting lineup.

Would love to see Patterson come in as an analyst. If pk is staying, would be nice to have a guy like Patterson helping him. Would be a nice little retirement gig for far Pat
Would be interesting but I'm afraid oil and water would mix better. They seem to be polar opposites.

- Amen to the changing narrative of this season. Hearing an administrator saying there's no talent on the team to excuse the Kansas loss won't help unify a fractured locker room.

- It is time for Overshown to get healthy and focus on the NFL draft. I think Foster, Jamison, and Dicker are day three picks.

- You never know how much you miss the Texas Bowl until it's gone.

- The 2022 class is intact. The big issue will be the 2023 class. I am not sure how you convince elite players to join a 4-8 or 5-7 team when they have so many other appealing paths.

- Mike Gundy is living proof that coaching matters. He is one of the most underrated coaches in the country.

- You and I are in that group of teams fighting for the sixth seed. I feel like my team will get my hopes up and let me down in the final week.

@Ketchum

How does the staff feel about Parr, Garth and Connor next year? Connor seemed to be closer than the other two based on reports.
Do you get the sense that PK will be able to hire his staff?

It's certainly possible, but it doesn't seem to be what he'd prefer to do.
I appreciate your discussion in the thread.
Couple of observations, this is a Larry MacDuff moment on PK. He clearly hasn’t worked out. One thing that Sark needs to understand is the Texas fan base is more engaged than most. There are at least 4 major websites that analyse the team giving most fans informed opinions. Couple that with the amount of HS coach’s and former players, and he can’t hide bad schemes, and poor player development. Everyone saw the constant deployments of two high safeties on short yardage, couple that with defensive player regression, and if Sark thinks the status quo on Defense gets him a year 3, he’s mistaken. He needs a Muschamp personality to take charge of that side of the ball. Finally, a coordinator’s inability to communicate what a position coach needs to be synced with the scheme is a huge red flag. All of the excuses and problems with the defense are just obfuscation of the underlying problem with the scheme and leader.

I think it's a mistake to give up on his skill set. You may be right--he may not be the answer ever, let alone next season. But we need to let Card develop. He has some skills that are worth investing in.
I think Card has a chance with a decent OL in front of him.
In watching the Cowboys game yesterday, Dak Prescott looked like a mere mortal as he was being hurried/harrassed/sacked because of the OL. (No Tyron Smith)
No offense will work without a decent OL.

Texas can't go into the SEC without momentum. Full stop.
Worst case scenario…Sark is let go next year…will entering the SEC appeal to more coaches than if we had stayed in the Big 12?? Like an Urban Meyer type???

1 QB, 1 WR, 3 OL, 2 edge, 1 LB and 2 DB

On a soon to be 4-8 team, with the worst defense in Texas history. Perhaps, the coach’s player analysis is part of the problem.
I was thinking of three different DCs, but your point isn't unfair.

The '22 class will be impacted in that it will close with a whimper instead of a bang given how the season has gone. But yes, the '23 class is quickly steaming towards mediocrity.

Gary Patterson hasn't spent the better part of the last decade owning Texas as their daddy and folks think he's going to come in as an analyst or something just sounds myopic to me.

There's absolutely no reason for him to slum it.

How they game-plan the 2023 class will be everything. They can't afford to live in the clouds.

I've caught a month of bad beats. I went from being on the verge of clinching a win last night to seeing my opponent his 3 7s on the slot machine with the pass from Herbert to Williamsn.

I'm on life support.

To restate a parable: It is more difficult for Johnny Heisman to find the End Zone than to create his own hole in the line of scrimmage.

And the corollary is: Big, strong, fast DLmen can put a QB on his butt better than small, weak, slow ones.

Amen Brother and pass the ammunition....
