Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Is this the 2nd best Texas offense of all-time?)

Neither have we. I refuse to anoint LSU just because they are SEC.

So far this year:

Memphis beat Ole Miss
North Carolina beat South Carolina
Georgia State and BYU beat Tennessee
Wyoming beat Missouri
Purdue beat Vandy
Kansas St. beat Miss St.
Wow. Doubling down. Start a poll and see what the results are. Has nothing to do because they are in the SEC.

Did you really say OSU will be the best defense that we will play up to this point? Shirley you can’t be serious. Based on what? You just anointed their defense that has been thrashed.

Do you think Rice’s or LA Tech’s defense is better than OSU? I don’t. I have no way to judge LSU’s defense. They have played no one but us, and we put 500+ yards on them.

We put more yards on than LSU than either LA Tech or Rice.

While much of the focus in this week's match-up with Oklahoma State will focus on Mike Gundy's recent record vs. Texas, which includes a four-game winning streak in Austin that extends back to 2008, I wanted to take a 30,000-foot view of what Gundy has done since being named head coach in Stillwater back in 2005 when Les Miles left for LSU.

Gundy has always fascinated me because he's never been known as a head coach that loves recruiting, but he still finds a way to build nationally-ranked teams each year without the mega-blue chips. In fact, when his team comes to Austin on Saturday, he'll arrive with a mere 11 four-star prospects to his resume in recruiting over the course of the last five full recruiting cycles.

That's considerably fewer than the number of four and five star prospects (16) that Tom Herman signed in the 2019 recruiting class alone.

The friction that has existed in some corners of Stillwater with Gundy centers around the fact that if he just recruited a little better ... if he just cared a little more ... there's no telling what he could do on the field, but that's likely never going to happen. In fact, the Cowboys are trending in the wrong direction on the recruiting front, twice finishing 40th or worse in the last four years, something that had never happened in his first 10 full recruiting classes.

So, just how much value is Oklahoma State getting for its investment in Gundy and is it possible that the Cowboys aren't getting enough return on their investment? Let's take a look at the last 10 seasons under Gundy and compare his results with his recruiting rankings to see if a clearer picture emerges.

Biggest takeaways?

There's some interesting philosophical discussion to be had about the job that Gundy has done and continues to do in Stillwater.

On one hand, there's no question that he's the best head coach in the modern history of football at Oklahoma State and when you look at the data, he has a history of over-performing against his recruiting class rankings.

On the other hand, recruiting is in a half-decade decline and the Cowboys have finished unranked in three of the last seven seasons following the historic 2011 season and in none of those seven seasons have they failed to lose at least three games per season.

How you ultimately feel about the job he does each year probably comes down to what kind of upside Oklahoma State has as a program. If you believe that there's no reason that Oklahoma State shouldn't be competing for conference championships and that a more recruiting-focused plan would help the program get there, you probably aren't as impressed as you should be. If you believe that Oklahoma State is as good as it’s ever going to be and that he is maximizing the talent around him, you should be made aware of the fact that the Cowboys have routinely been a middle-of-The-Big12-pack recruiting machine, unable to consistently turn those ranked seasons into top-20 classes.

If Oklahoma State could consistently finish with the Big 12's third-best recruiting classes, a modest request given the circumstances of the competition, it's hard not to think the results would reflect that improvement. Tylan Wallace, Chuba Hubbard and Spencer Sanders were all four-star recruits and rank as the highest-rated recruits in the program. Landing five or six four-star prospects in an average year instead of a shade over two (over the last five recruiting classes) might be the difference between a 12-1 season instead of a 10-3 season.

Of course, you'll have to excuse Texas fans for bowing down to Gundy, who was once owned by Mack Brown, but eventually turned it around to the point that he owned Mack, Charlie and Tom over the last decade in a way that's pretty damn embarrassing for a program that almost never has fewer than five times the number of four- or five-star prospects on its roster.

The Cowboys might be able to do better, but you'll never convince anyone in Austin of that.

No. 2 - Hyperbole or not ...

One of the things that rolled around in my brain on Saturday night was the eventual resting place for this year's offense at the end of the year.

It's my opinion that the 2005 offense (led by Vince Young) is in its own stratosphere, while the second-best offense was probably the 2008 unit (led by Colt McCoy.) A glance at the Texas record book shows that the top four scoring offenses in school history are 2005 (50.2), 2008 (42.4), 1969 (41.4) and 1970 (41.2)

We're only one-fourth of the way through the regular season, but the 2019 Longhorns are currently averaging 43.7 points per game.

On top of that, the 2019 Longhorns currently have an offense that ranks first all-time in Texas history in passing yards per game, second in total yards per game (497.7), fourth all-time in yards per play (6.5) and second in pass completion percentage (72.8-percent).

There's a lot of football to be played, but appreciate what is happening in front of you because this is almost certainly a top 3 offense in the history of the program when it's completely healthy and operating on all cylinders.

No. 3 - The million dollar question for Saturday night ...

If it takes 30 points to win on Saturday, the Longhorns will likely roll.

If it takes 40 points to win on Saturday, the Longhorns will likely be in a coin-flip game.

I'm fairly certain that the Longhorns are going to put up 40 on the Cowboys, but I don't have the slightest clue what I should expect out of a Texas defense that could be without BJ Foster and Joseph Ossai. Losing Ossai to a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of a five- or six-score game feels like a criminal mistake on the following day.

I believe the over/under for the game is currently 70 1/2.

Take the over, folks. It's going to be that kind of game.

No. 4 - If Ossai doesn't play against Oklahoma State ...

Who lines up next to Jeffery McCulloch when the Longhorns play in a scheme that puts two linebackers on the field?

Technically, redshirt freshman Byron Vaughns is Ossai's back-up at the B-backer spot, but Vaughns hasn't played a lot of football this season up until now.

The smart money would probably be on Mike linebackers Ayodele Adeoye and Juwan Mitchell rotating back and forth, as they seemed to do in the second half against Rice.

Regardless, as long as Ossai is out of action, the Longhorns really don't have anyone that can properly replace what he brings to the table as the team's best defensive playmaker this season.

No. 5 - Five players I'm still thinking of ...

Here's a look at five players from Saturday night that I'm still thinking about nearly 24 hours later.

QB: Sam Ehlinger: I know it was just Rice, but that was Ehlinger's first 200+ quarterback efficiency game rating of his career. You might as well call him Bruce Leroy because this kid has the glow.

OL Parker Braun: The importance of Braun along the offensive line was never more apparent than when Zach Shackelford went out of the game. No offense to Tope Imade, but the quality of this entire group changes considerably when the middle of the line loses one of its parts. No one even wants to think of what not having two of those parts would mean. No, he's not redshirting.

RB Roschon Johnson: Going into the game, Johnson's best rush of the season had been eight yards and I found myself wondering when the true breakout game was going to occur. Well, Johnson provided that answer in the first half on Saturday night when he broke the glass with 25-yard touchdown reception. Mix in a 59-yard performance on the ground and in my mind we're talking about a player that is suddenly competing for Keaontay Ingram's starting job.

LB Juwan Mitchell: Every time Mitchell takes the field, he makes an impression. That was certainly the case on Saturday when he led the team in tackles (5), despite limited reps. Of all the players in the program that might be making a modest contribution in September, but might be making a monster contribution in November, Mitchell might rank at the top of the list.

WR Jake Smith: He's even better than I thought and I thought he was really damn good.

Pats bs Chiefs will be an epic battle. Pats are loaded on defense and now loaded on their passing game.

I want to have a freak out about your country list, but there are so many all time greats, it's pretty impossible to have a top ten that would not be heavily disputed. I don't think George Straight belongs there, but to each his own.

#2- stats don’t lie but the thing that makes me not agree from an eyeball perspective is this team doesn’t make it look easy like the top 4 teams did. I feel like I exhale loudly every time we complete a pass to Eagles, CJ or Epps. Under oath, I guess I have to admit that Duv and Jake made it look pretty easy the first two games. Splitting hairs on all of the above I guess, but I would love for these boys to average 45 or more the whole season.

Oh good lord, they are not good because they aren SEC they are good because they have nfl talent all over the place and are killing teams including beating us on the road.

But let’s not let logic or football sense into the conversation.

OSU will be the 2nd best team we have played. Period.

Agreed, my heart would be better without all of these 3rd & long passes but to the Team's credit, Sam and the WR's come through more often than not so far.

IMO, a WTF moment that Ossai and other starters were in that late in a 5 TD game. Texas doesn’t need style points - it needed to squash Rice early, which it did, and secondly, come out of it healthy and rest starters- which it didn’t do defensively right away. The way he’s played this year, Ossai is basically Sam for he defense- you pull him when game is out of hand. Potentially a huge mistake depending on severity.

I’ll also add Texas at 2-2 with 2 home losses after 4 games and season is set up as a failure minus running the table.

Agreed. I *like* our coaches, but to be honest, they're really pretty stupid and this has been consistent since CTH came to Texas. Can't seem to see how bad some players are and in situations where a 12 year old would know better, they're so f*cking stubborn that they leave starters in a game that is a 30 point blowout. Any moron with no coaching experience knows, absolutely knows, that that is a bad idea.

WTF?! is right. And I hate to say this, but OSU is gonna beat up our defense just as badly as LSU did. I hope the O can keep up...we've seen what our backups look like now and it aint pretty.

Okie Lite was a doormat before Gundy came. He does a great job with what he has.Unlikely they will ever win the Big 12 given what an underdog they are to Ou in the state, but they are not doormats any longer.
Not true.

Les Miles turned around that program first before Gundy took over. Gundy was Les’ OC at Oklahoma State when Les left for LSU. Gundy took over.

Les Miles at Oklahoma State:

2001: 4-7
2002: 8-5
2003: 9-4
2004: 7-5

He went 2-2 vs Oklahoma.

Gundy is 2-12 vs OU.

Oklahoma State’s upset of Oklahoma in 2001 allowed Texas to go to the Big 12 Championship Game in 2001 Colorado.

We shan't say anymore about that game.

What the hell is wrong with you? Dolly Parton? She wouldn't make a top 100 list. Gary Stewart? Over Ray Price? Bob Wills? Conway Twitty? Garth Brooks? Unbelievable.
It wouldn't be my list either but that's who Ketch prefers. I wouldn't have Dolly anywhere near my top ten list. Garth either. To me King George is a slam dunk number 1 with zero competition but everyone has different tastes. There are so many great ones it's hard to come up with a top ten list. I loved Eddie Rabbit, Charley Pride, Don Williams, Steve Wariner, Charlie Rich, and many others. I'd probably have to leave a couple of them off of my top ten list.

Oh good lord, they are not good because they aren SEC they are good because they have nfl talent all over the place and are killing teams including beating us on the road.

But let’s not let logic or football sense into the conversation.

OSU will be the 2nd best team we have played. Period.

The “teams” they killed are:
Georgia Southern, and
Northwestern State. Oooooooooooo.

The next two big challenges are:
Vanderbilt, and
Utah State. Ooooooooooooooooo

You’re correct. Let’s not have reality enter into this.

OSU may be the 2nd best team we have played, but we won’t know until Saturday. OSU has been “killing teams” like that also.

Then what does it have something to do?

Their competition? They have played no one. And won’t until week 6 of the season.
It has do with the fact that Aranda has coached one of the top defenses in the NCAA as a defensive coordinator each year. Last year they had one of the top defenses in the NCAA and will again this year. They returned 8 starters.

Had we left our starters in for four quarters against La Tech and Rice on offense and defense, the scores and total yards would look VERY different. Neither of our second teams are very good at this point. We lack depth although it’s getting better. Our number one offense is borderline elite in this years college game and our QB1 is playing elite.

OSU hasn’t played anyone yet.

Rice is horrible. La Tech is 2-1 and LSU is top 5 with a QB that is outplaying our elite QB1. We barely lost to LSU. A play here or there was the difference and if Sam gets the ball back I believe we tie the game. Point is, OSU defense won’t be close to LSU defense. Not this year or any year Orgeron and Aranda are the coaches at LSU. Aranda is a great defensive coach and they get top notch talent because Orgeron can recruit! OSU Does not have a top flight DC in the same area code as Aranda and it’s well documented that The Mullet doesn’t focus on recruiting. These facts are supported by the numbers.

None of this has anything to do with the SEC or anything to do with LSUs schedule this year to date. It’s history, current facts and circumstances.

LSU will be the best defense we face all year. Statistically and talent wise.

Make the argument that OSU has the best offense that our porous defense will face this year and I would say that will be a race between OSU, OU, and LSU. Like you said though, we will find out this weekend!

The argument seems to be, if Herman had left his 1st string offense in for the full game against really crappy teams like LSU/SEC does, we would have a better defense. In that our D would have been on the field less, you may be onto something there. Statistically, that may be correct.

No way Sam will turn pro. Mack and I also said that about VY. Big mistake for Vince that Sam will not make.
I don't think VY made a mistake. I mean... he signed a 25+ million dollar deal.

Dolly Parton not making a top 100?

What the hell is wrong with YOU?

This Offense will Never be better than 69 and 70.
Hard to compare thw two directly, but if we're keeping it real, the 69-70 teams had no where near the speed and raw athleticism, that this offense has.
