Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Is this the 2nd best Texas offense of all-time?)

why do you exhale when it goes to Eagles, CJ or Epps?
It just doesn’t seem as sure a catch with them. Also, passes to them seem to always be more contested (jump balls, etc). I’m sure it’s just my own perception. o_O

Texas would have been the odds on favorite to win another NC if Vince came back. If that happened, his legend would exceed even Earl's. It might not have been a mistake for Vince to come out if he had a reasonable team of advisers, but he did not. He signed his opportunity away and lost it all. Big mistake.

I love Earl as does pretty much every Longhorn fan does. I also have zero doubt Earl's "legend" has been exceeded by VY's. And I doubt I'm alone in thinking that. What VY did or didn't do with his earnings has ZERO impact as to whether or not he "made the right decision." He did.

B/S: You make the pick Boyce missed and take it to the house.

(Sell) I'm like Boyce in that I might have made that break, but I wouldn't have jumped that high and the ball would have never been caught.

Just the thought of that sequence makes me smile Ketch!

Epps still fights the ball a bit. Look at his incompletion that hit him right in the hands. The other two, seem sure handed along with Dev and Jake and our backs other than the important drop by Ingram that we have already over analyzed on OB.

I don't think there's any need to worry about the ball going to any of these receivers.

Sam takes care of the ball right now at historic levels.

2nd best all time when Whittington returns and when we actually throw deep pattern to TE so all weapons used.

I'm late to the party, but I would replace Patsy with the "Queen of Country Music", Tammy Wynette. Love Gary Stewart - if MIckey Gilley and Jerry Lee Lewis had a baby.

Patsy is closer to being No.1 for me than not being on the list at all.

@TeamTraction how many future pros do you believe is on the Oklahoma State defense? LSU's defense?

LSU’s defensive players will be ready for a career in acting, and will do well if they join an unethical organization as they will be conditioned to do unethical things at the signal from their boss.

LSU MAY have an effective defense, based on subjective criteria. My point is that right now, we don’t have a clue. They haven’t played anyone, and neither have we.

We can pat ourselves on the back and say we scored 38 points against the mighty LSU D, and they can beat their chest and say they held the mighty Texas offense to 38 points, but in reality, that means nothing at this point. Neither one of us has played anyone with a pulse.

We will learn something this weekend, more so than LSU. I suppose the corollary is that I think OSU is significantly better than Vandy.

George Strait has to be #1
Strait has sold more than 70 million records worldwide,[7] making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His certifications from the RIAA include 13 multi-platinum, 33 platinum, and 38 gold albums. His best-selling album is Pure Country (1992), which sold 6 million (6× platinum). His highest certified album is Strait Out of the Box (1995), which sold 2 million copies (8× Platinum due to being a box set with four CDs).
Strait has amassed a total of 60 number-one hits.

You literally did everything but answer the question I asked.

Crazy that Pure Country is his top-selling album.

No. 2 - Hyperbole or not ...

One of the things that rolled around in my brain on Saturday night was the eventual resting place for this year's offense at the end of the year.

It's my opinion that the 2005 offense (led by Vince Young) is in its own stratosphere, while the second-best offense was probably the 2008 unit (led by Colt McCoy.) A glance at the Texas record book shows that the top four scoring offenses in school history are 2005 (50.2), 2008 (42.4), 1969 (41.4) and 1970 (41.2)

We're only one-fourth of the way through the regular season, but the 2019 Longhorns are currently averaging 43.7 points per game.

On top of that, the 2019 Longhorns currently have an offense that ranks first all-time in Texas history in passing yards per game, second in total yards per game (497.7), fourth all-time in yards per play (6.5) and second in pass completion percentage (72.8-percent).

There's a lot of football to be played, but appreciate what is happening in front of you because this is almost certainly a top 3 offense in the history of the program when it's completely healthy and operating on all cylinders.

It's an interesting discussion/debate to have. When you are talking about the most talented offenses Texas has ever had, I think it's pretty easy to make a case that every single Texas offense between the years of 2000 and 2008 are fielding more talent than the current version of the Texas offense, and I'm not even sure it's that close. During that 9 year run, there was NFL talent all over the field for Texas.

How many NFL players are on the current Texas offensive roster? Cosmi (day 1-2), Ehlinger (day 3?), Collin Johnson (day 2-3 but hasn't played like it), Duvernay (day 3?), and maybe a couple guys (Eagles, Smith, and Angilau) that are 2 years away from becoming NFL prospects.

Every offense we had between 2000 and 2008 had more NFL talent on the field pretty much across the board compared to this year, but the numbers this year also don't lie, and that's a testament to how good Sam is playing and how good of a job the coaching staff is doing with an offense that doesn't have any elite superstars at the skill positions.

You named 4 with 3 more potentials plus I see Braun (better at pass than thought and mauls people), Shack (he will go in draft) and if Kerksetter keeps dev an outside possibility. I would be willing to bet Whittington will get shot someday as well. I say the offense has a great deal of NFL talent. Of course its tough to argue either way until this roster goes through the draft.

Shack and Kerstetter have the feel of undrafted free agent types, and Braun simply looks too small to me to be an NFL guy. This isn't to say they aren't good or even great college football players. But this isn't a line featuring Blalock, Scott, Sendlein, Studdard, and Tony Hills either.

Whittington goes into the categories of hasn't made an impact in the stats this year and is 2 years away from being an NFL-level prospect.

Compare that with the 2002 roster, when you have two NFL QBs on the roster (both of whom are the #1 overall player in Rivals rankings), a top 5 pick at RB and another NFL RB backing him up, a top 10 pick at WR, two NFL tight ends, and I don't even know how many OL from that team that made the NFL.

Well, we should probably start with the fact that the 2019 offensive line is substantially better than the 2008 offensive line.

TE is a wash.

RB is mostly a wash.

2019 WR unit is deeper.

Comes down to the quarterback conversation, ultimately.

Ketch, you apparently never went to a Merle Haggard live performance. Over the years I saw him perform 3 times and he did not do a curtain call in any of them. Great talent yes, but not a fan's performer. I saw George Jones once, and he did a curtain call when he almost had to crawl on the stage.

Merle not doing a curtain call might make him move up the list instead of down.

Shiiiiiit, Gary Stewart was either late or no showed 99-percent of the shows he ever performed.

Gary Stewart...

You’ve got to be able to run the ball better than this to be one of the top offenses of all time. Hard to compare offenses from different eras - the game continues to evolve.

What about the 2004-2005 offense with Cedric?

The 2008 team didn't have a great line and pretty much lived and died by Colt/Quan/Jordan each week.

Fair enough when it comes to 2008. However, the argument for there being more NFL talent on the 2000-2007 teams remains. The whole point is it's a testament to what the coaching staff is doing with this offense when there aren't really any high round draft picks running around the field on offense. There's not a Cedric Benson or a Jamaal Charles or a Roy Williams or a David Thomas level talent on the offense.

I think the high number of NFL players really ranges from 2001-2006.

From the performance against us, none. If I was an NFL scout, I wouldn’t be basing my draft picks on performances against Georgia Southern, Northwestern State or mighty Utah State. So, until the 6th week of the season, when LSU finally plays a team with a pulse, I seriously doubt that any of LSU defensive players are on the clock.
