Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (There Will Be Blood)

You have to have a story that kids want to buy. The Texas defense right now doesn't truly have that.

Plus, A&M was very, very committed to making sure it landed Hill. BY any means.
What does that say about the coaches and players? I would love for them to get the SMU punishment.

Let's not be naive about what happened this weekend with regards to Denton Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill's commitment to Texas A&M and its impact on Steve Sarkisian's 2023 recruiting class.

It leaves a mark.

Arguably the most important defensive prospect of the entire cycle for the Longhorns, Hill is the kind of prospect that could walk into Austin as a starter from day one and change the entire look of that side of the ball for Texas. That many inside the Texas program believed the Longhorns had surged into the lead for his commitment earlier this summer only makes the loss to Texas A&M sting even more.

If you're hoping that I've got some words to soften the blow, you're in the wrong place, mainly because there's not really another player left on the recruiting board that brings his level of athleticism, playmaking and long-term projection to the table. There will be five-star linebackers that the Longhorns will be able to target in future years, but there was only one Hill in the 2023 recruiting class.

Losing him to A&M comes with consequences because prospects like Hill don't grow on trees. Hell, just ask A&M. In the modern era of recruiting, the Aggies have never landed a five-star linebacker. The home of the alleged Wrecking Crew has never even signed a high four-star linebacker since Rivals reinvented itself as a company back in 2001.

Yet, while acknowledging that the loss of Hill is a big deal, it's not some sort of death-blow to a recruiting class that appears headed for a second consecutive top-five ranking.

More than anything, it's a reminder that the landscape in recruiting around these parts is as competitive right now as it has ever been. From 2002-2018, the trio of Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma had never finished in the top 10 together in the Rivals team recruiting rankings.

It happened for the first time in 2019. It happened again in 2022. There's a very strong possibility that it will happen again in the Class of 2023.

There are no lay-up lines in the state of Texas for elite talent, as the hand-to-hand combat for super blue-chip prospects would be enough to make Dana White blush. Folks, this is what recruiting in 2023 looks like. You give and get black eyes on a routine basis.

If you believed earlier in the month that an A&M program that finished with a historically good No. 1-ranked class in 2022 was going to get shut out in 2023, your head is in the sand. If you're an A&M fan that believes that the arrival of Hill means that Sarkisian and Co. are done winning head-to-head battles, your head is in the sand. If both fan bases are watching Brent Venables and his staff pull prospects in the last month and believe that OU's success won't ever impact them, the sand will eventually suffocate them.

There will be blood for the rest of the 2023 recruiting cycle. Sometimes it will be the other guy's, and on occasions it will be your own.

Maybe following recruiting isn't for you if the reality of the moment is too much for your nerves to handle.

No. 2 - Pressure builds on the Texas defensive coaches ...

What really stings so much about the loss of Hill this weekend is the reality that the Longhorns just don't have anyone remotely close to his talent level on the defensive side of the ball.

By my own definition, a super blue chip prospect is a prospect that rates as either a five-star or high four-star in the recruiting rankings. Going into the 2022 season, the Texas defense currently has one super blue chip player on its roster on the defensive side of the ball ... 2022 defensive back signee Terrance Brooks. So far in the 2023 class, the Longhorns have added commitments from two more super blues on the defensive side of the ball - cornerback Malik Muhammad and safety Derek Williams.

What the defense lacks is difference-making talent at linebacker, defensive end and defensive tackles. After struggling to close the deal with the biggest names in the Portal this off-season, the staff still hasn't proven that it can close the deal with the elite of the elite up-front on the other side of the ball from Sarkisian's personal expertise.

More than anything, the coaches on that side of the ball (not including the secondary) have had a hard time putting together a story or sales pitch that is exciting enough to help close the deal with the likes of a prospect like Hill.

"Texas is a great school but I just felt like A&M was the better fit for me," Hill told Rivals.com after making his decision. "Just the way the defense is set up and the guys around it. Being able to compete against guys like Evan Stewart every day and play with that d-line.”

Last year's defensive performance is absolutely impacting the staff's ability to close with elite defensive prospects. It remains to be seen whether the results will change before this staff can provide a defense on the field that gets defensive prospects excited.

No. 3 - And then there were three?

Based on my own rankings, there are three truly super blue prospects from the state of Texas that remain uncommitted ...

Of those three, Hicks appears to be leaning towards Oklahoma, Toviano is a dog fight between Texas, Texas A&M and LSU, while Shelby is down to USC and Texas.

Three other prospects are probably in the borderline super blue territory.

Of those three, the Longhorns are the favorites to land Hale, while OU leads for Vasek and A&M is the likely destination for Shanahan.

From an out-of-state perspective, these are the super blues (or nearly super blue) that remain on the table:

As you can see, we're close to entering the home stretch for the prospects that matter the most in the 2023 class. By the end of the month, only a precious few will still remain undecided.

No. 4 - Prediction time ...

Unless something changes (and one of these three names visited Texas A&M on Sunday), these three are the betting favorites for the next three members of the 2023 recruiting class.

The wildcard from this trio is Gullette, who visited Texas A&M on Sunday and is expected to make an announcement on his commitment this week.

My sources told me Texas was looking incredibly good going into the weekend. Same for Suchomel's sources. Same for Rivals' Nick Harris’s sources.

Assuming nothing changed dramatically on Sunday, these three feel like safe bets for the next three.

No. 5 - Recruiting randomness ...

.... David Hicks Jr. being such a reported heavy lean to Oklahoma is the second biggest story of the weekend outside of Hills' commitment to A&M. In terms of the Longhorns trying to kick down the door in a way that allows them to be a bigger factor in his recruitment, I can't quite decide if it's a good or bad thing.

... Texas needs more coaches on its defensive staff to be mentioned among the super blues. It can't all be about playing with Arch.

... Less than 24 hours after hanging out with Arch Manning, word started to spread that Austin Westlake defensive end Colton Vasek was close to committing to the Sooners. Gotta admit ... didn't quite see that coming.

... Shiner's Dalton Brooks is one hell of a high school player, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have concerns about his ability to make a clean transition from his current level of play to the major college scene.

... Mikal Harrison-Pilot to TCU is growing as a possibility, especially if Longview's Jalen Hale commits to Texas in September.

... Super blue chip leader board (using the Rivals national rankings): Texas A&M (4), Texas (3) and Oklahoma (2).

No. 6 - Just a reminder of a historical curiosity ...

The stat that my former radio partner Chad Hastings produced a few years ago still lives.

In the history of both the Texas and Texas A&M football programs, both teams have never won nine or more games at the same time in two consecutive years.

It's never happened. When one is up, the other is usually down. With both schools recruiting so well at the moment, it has me wondering if and when we'll see history change.

No. 7 – BUY or SELL …

BUY-SELL.gif

(Buy) Man, I hate to speculate, but the recruiting up front lacks difference-makers and the product on the field hasn't been good yet. There's still time to turn things around, but it's impossible to not be concerned.

(Sell) It'll be close, though. Jimbo has built a recruiting monster in College Station.

(Buy) That felt like a very easy buy.

(Sell): I'd personally go Hicks, Hill, Vasek and Gullette.

(Buy) That's certainly part of the problem, but his product on the field from last season is holding back the ability to close on the super blues more than anything else.

(Sell) This kind of stuff ranks down the list of things the competition can show prospects. A piece of paper with performance rankings from last year is far more impactful.

(Buy) JMO.

(Sell) I'd take the under of 2.5 very slightly.

(Sell) I've been riding with Suchomel for 27 years. I hope it never changes.

(Buy) In the Ketchum house, we buy Shipley's. It's a big deal to my wife.

(Sell) The trends in recruiting played a much bigger role.

(Sell) Probably not. There will be excellent players that hit the Portal next year, but I'm not sure any will be the kind of three-year starter and likely first- or second-day NFL draft pick that Hill projects to be.

(Sell) Has a surprise 5-star defensive line commitment ever happened with the Longhorns?

No. 8 - Scattershooting ...

... Rest in peace, Bill Russell. You were a hell of a better man than you ever were a basketball player, and you were one hell of a basketball player. The world is better off because you were in it.

... Our first pre-season NFL game is on Thursday. It should be an awful affair between Jacksonville and Oakland and yet ... I'm in.

... I'm really rooting for Malik Jefferson in his quest to make the Cowboys. Here's hoping he jumps out from a crowd very early in camp, so that he can't put himself into a position to truly compete for a spot from jump street.

... I hate the Celtics, but that would be an amazing spot for Kevin Durant if the Celtics can get a deal done.

... Taking the kids to their first Astros game this week. It'll be my first in-person MLB game since 9/14/11 when Dustin McComas and I watched Roy Halladay throw a 1-0 shutout against the Astros.

... Yes, I watched the women's EURO final on Sunday. Kudos to England. That performance will be remembered in the UK for a very long time.

... There might not be a better display in sports between competitive teams right now than when Man City and Liverpool get together on a pitch. Neither team backs down. Both are always going for it. There's nothing else quite like it in club soccer and I struggle to think of which teams in other sports bring out the excellence from all-time sides quite like this one does. Maybe the mid-90s Cowboys/Niners.

No. 9 - The List: Top 10 Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies ...

Arnold turned 75 this weekend.

Such a big number deserves a list, so here we go.

10. End of Days

With an 11% critics score and 32% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, I might be the only person that would include this in a top 10 list, but I have seen this movie a ton over the years on cable and the battle between Arnold's drunk cop character and Gabriel Byrne's Devil has always been a personal favorite. Flame away.

9. Eraser

Easily the most underrated of the big budget movies he's produced. Robert Pastorelli steals a bunch of scenes and Arnold, James Caan and Vanessa Williams all deliver the goods.

8. Conan The Barbarian

The first Arnold movie of my lifetime. I'm pretty sure I saw this on cable when I was six or seven.

7. Kindergarten Cop

Admit it, you've quoted this scene a few times in your life.

6. Commando

Another movie that I remember exactly where I was when I watched it for the first time ... summer of 1986 at the Waco Boy's Club.

5. True Lies

This might actually be an underrated slot for what is still the perfect big-budget summer blockbuster.

4. Total Recall

There's a part of me that feels like I'm overrating it at No. 4, but I also know that some will think the spot is too low.

3. The Terminator

One of the best science-fiction movies of the 1908s at the very least.

2. Predator

Probably the Arnold movie that I have watched the most in my lifetime.

1. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

If not for Godfather II, we might be talking about the best sequel to any movie ever made.

No. 10 - And Finally ...

The thing I love about Orangebloods the most is that we might be a site full of degenerates, but we take care of our own degenerates.

In fact, no one does a cause quite like we do causes.

Oh 11:35 am on Friday, I was contacted by a 20-year OB subscriber that we can call "Sara." With her life becoming more complicated by the day after surviving a brutal abusive marriage, she reached out to me via Facebook messenger to see if OB might be able to help her.

Within 3 hours, we had $1300 in her hands and within 5 hours, we had raised $10,000 on a gofundme page. By the end of the week, I'm confident that we're going to raise more than $25,000 to help her and her family build a completely life-changing fresh start.

We did good this weekend. Thanks to everyone for helping us in our quest to make a difference.
The one positive thing about losing Hill is it must have been a wake up call to not rest on your laurels. If our staff is good and our NIL is competitive, we should make a dent in a few of those 4&5 stars.

Go 9-3 (or better) in 2022 and this past weekend goes away for 2023 and beyond. This is not all on the defensive coaches. Aggy and their crypto could not stomach losing Hill. Give me a break in the sense that aggy is that much better of a program right now. WTF have they actually accomplished on the field ever? Jimbo is mediocre, aggy knows it and they can’t afford to lose a recruit like Hill to a 5-7 Texas team that just picked up Arch. Aggy is desperate and a turnaround season for Sark and CO. fixes all of this nonsense. And OU sucks!!! 🤘🏻

Hopefully some of these freshman dl’s will develop the way Byron Murphy did his freshman season. If so the defense will start to come together by the end of the year. It would be a big help this year if the offense would control the ball for a bigger percentage of the game than they did last year. That way the defense isn’t on the field as much.
Whittington, and his health, are huge keys to time of possession.

Thanks Ketch. Way to step up,and take care of that young woman and her family. It saddens me that these sort of things are still going on in todays world. I have a young daughter of 23 and I pray every night she meets a nice young man who treats her like a lady and they beautiful healthy children and I can be there as their Grandpa for many years to come.

You bring up great points I’ve noticed we can differ on all kinds of sports and politics but we all seem to have compassionate and caring Big Hearts when it comes to helping someone in need.

It reminds of the time you stepped up and ask for our help with the unfortunate family that lost both their boys to tragic car accidents in East Texas years ago.

My heart ached for those parents losing not one, but both their sons to tragic car accidents, once again you organized a Go Fund me page and OB members stepped up to pay for their burials. Just know that even though we may differ I think your a good man and have a Big Heart and I respect greatly what you do for these people in need.
God Bless you.

We’ve been through too much to be so thinned skinned to think it’s not a war in recruiting and that we will get everyone we want. What’s bothersome is the poor defensive results on the field and inability to get blue chip D players as you said. i love to know if Sark has a plan B with Gary to replace coach K during the season if he falters. You have to believe Sark had that discussion with Gary.

Me too. I've personally had a very rough week and doing some good in the world has made things better.
A ray of sunshine on the cloudiest of days can make a difference. I'm not even talking about who has committed or will commit to where.
There are so many bad things going on on the world these days that make it difficult to think about football.
Being able to contribute to the OB in desperate need surely helps me in ways I don't think anyone on this forum will ever know.

It’s like our pastor says that when you struggle with your own lives and the prayers to cure our lives, focus on someone else who may be worse.
It truly sounds that she may be worse.

when Chuck and the others of us took on our project two years ago it was right in the middle of COVID, hot as hockey sticks, I was just a few days away from Achilles surgery and all of us who participated had our own other mess we were bogged down by but I’ll run the risk of speaking for Chuck, Michelle and the others who participated in this, when we met to get something to eat after we’d gotten the family settled in East Dallas all I could think of was how blessed I was and how much more we could have done to help. It was like the end of a war movie With everyone pulling together. It was also a joy as Chuck and I had been long time members but never met- mainly argued about politics, sports, entertainment, Dallas’s hopeless comparison vs Houston but we pulled together for a common cause- Men and women who didn’t know each other at all. And before we left, Chuck was committing to check in on that family to make sure they’re ok

Ketch, the effort you led is something nobody else would have been able to pull together from so many disparate contributors of various levels and you deserve some credit to. As a long time member I’ve had to laugh at your image here by many people who agree with you and your finite math /statistical mastery equations that tell us if a LB will be a bust or the next coming of Sergio Kindle/Tommy Nobis/Derrick Johnson. I’ll speak for my side of the house who may not agree with you at every opinion you put up but am sure an admirer of yours for putting up with this unruly audience and still giving us your wisdom, knowledge and taking on causes like these.

we are lucky to have you - Blessings to all of the Ketchums tonight and know your role in helping “Sara” to find peace
Thank you for the incredibly thoughtful note. Lot to chew on there, but I do appreciate the kindness inside of it.

At the end of the day, I love the hell out of this place. :)

I do agree to a certain point:

malik Jefferson

Jackson Jeffcoat

were all can’t miss 5 stars

one is a journeyman
One is who the F knows
One is bragging about CFL stats

You are a badass until your not in this recruiting game.

I agree with 95% of your takes but to make a 6’2” 235 LB the next LT is too steep for me

I remember Roylin Bradley and Christian Rodriguez going to Aggy to be the end of days and both were just JAGs at best.

The Vacek frame and potential is a bigger loss to me.

But this is why i love Orangebloods
We can wait 2-3 yrs and throw stones at each other .

Allow me to retort.

a. One was the Big 12 Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2017
b. One was a finalist for the Butkus Award and a two-time All-BIg 12 player
c. One was an All-Big 12 Player, the 2010 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and a guy that saw injuries keep him from more.

No one called Hill the next LT. You just made that up in your head.

Bradley was a 5 star. Christian Rodriguez was not.

Vasek is a heck of a player.

The defense needs a few players to emerge as playmakers.
