Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Time to double down on Sam...)

I didn’t think Spieth missing the cut at the Northern was as big a story as the way that Dustin Johnson posted a 30 under and essentially slapped the field around like they’d said something about his momma. That was an insanely great display of golf. He’s playing a lot like that kid from Stanford did for all those years. time will tell if he can stay on that pace

"I don't know how much I can trust an offensive line that has Denzel Okafor and Christian Jones holding down the right side of the line."

I wouldn't put the ink on Okafor starting quite yet...last year, after taking a 3rd year RS in '18, to get it all together, and all the hype he got preseason...he started one game b/c of injury and the majority of his snaps were ST.
Seeing is believing, and we have not seen much of anything yet. His LT start in the '17 Texas Bowl against Missouri was not good.

Also, Hookfin will likely start at RG, or possibly RT. I read on two sites he was getting both RG and RT reps in practice. Of course, Hand does that a lot. We'll see if the 5th year is the charm for Denzel, but I would not want to bet money on him. Lots of people expected success last year for Okafor and they were proven wrong.

Don't be shocked if it's Hookfin and Jones on the right side by mid season, if not sooner.

Christian Jones is a fine athlete who only played full time OT his Sr year of HS after playing two years of soccer and primarily D his first year in football. He needs reps and more reps, especially with no Spring football, but the raw talent is there. He could be a year away and he put on a fair amount of weight, but if he can handle it he has a future at OT. He's huge and can move.

Ready to see what Okafor has this year but don't bet the farm on him. Heard the hype before. Hope this is his year, but we'll see.

I read Tyler Johnson was a little sick when camp started, but he's another athletic OL (RS Fr) who just needs time. He was rated a .9722 4* on 247 composite as a Sr at Conroe Oak Ridge. Saw him play several times. HS beast with good feet.

We need our youth to grow up fast on OL. Hookfin, Tyler Johnson and Christian Jones are the future. Great to see Hookfin getting some starting time in his RS Fr year.

Man, I thought Rollison was going to ball out and remember thinking we whiffed big time on him.

@Ketchum with regards to your comment on Whittington, did he come up injured again. If so, I have missed that....my bad. Thanks for a great 10 Thoughts, as per usual.

The reason why you feel such level of uncertainty about this team is because 4 years in, this staff still can’t recruit and retain high level OLs.

I cannot remember a stretch of time when Texas has missed on almost every high level OL target as the stretch of time Herman has been HC.

It simply bottles the mind how inept he’s been at this during his tenure at Texas.

Also, what “$ec values” has Texas displayed recently?

every anwar post starts with a Tom Herman press release - here he simply states Herman has been successful as a recruiter / only talks about positive points in his intro paragraph - it reads as if written by a press agent

I could find plenty of recruiting content minimizing offensive line losses
There's literally zero discussion of recruiting in the paragraph that you've sited for your example.

I thought the boards Social Justice Warrior would call out racism when he sees it, no matter which race is doing the hate.
No, I don't think you've thought this one out.

I think it's been made very clear what opinions of mine are wanted and not wanted on this board.

Take your shit to the Corral or find another topic to bark to the moon about.

#7 Huge stones!
#9 You guys did a shitty job on Colt’s ratings, plain and simple, looking at measurables and not production
With 16 years of hindsight, where would you have ranked him, ol smart Jedi second-guesser?

Re: “It doesn’t feel like anything game-changing has happened at the running back position”...
How many practices/scrimmages have you watched? What would you already have expected to see three weeks from kickoff? What’s the carry breakdown so far through practice?
a. None. b. I don't know that I 'expected" anything. c. Lots of rotation.

ketch asked for an example of a mod not acknowledging the dumpster fire that is this year’s recruiting class
and you sited a column and a lede paragraph that has nothing to do with either?

Playing like Tiger in those events doesn't make him like Tiger.

It makes him like Dustin Johnson, no? A Hall of Fame talent with Hall of Fame game without the Hall of Fame results. He's a former world No.1 with one major to his credit and a bunch of No.2s.

He's like the Roy Williams (the receiver) of golf in a way, except he does have a major win.

a. I'm not writing anything in ink.

b. I'd listen to Anwar's reporting. If he's hearing it's going a certain way, it's going a certain way.

c. For that reason, I never give a shit what other sites report. It hasn't steered me once wrong yet.

Man, I thought Rollison was going to ball out and remember thinking we whiffed big time on him.
Should have listened to me on that one instead of the person screaming from the mountain-top that a kid that really, really struggled with the non athletic parts of what was expected of him.

I always had serious, serious doubts.

No. Just referenced him starting camp nursing the hammy.

Racism against whites never gets discussed. Sad
lol. sure it does.

Just not in this thread today. If you need to go discuss it, go discuss it there until you don't have any urge to discuss anywhere else.

It is playing football right now and has put playing football in front of extreme caution.

LOL, that’s not an $ec value - three leagues made the choice to play and one of the ones that chose not to is having extreme levels of regret and looks like complete clowns. For once the Big XII isn’t the joke.

Also, since when is “extreme caution” the standard? Under the standards of “extreme caution” no one should ever play football.

The leagues that are the jokes are the ones UT fancies itself as pals and colleagues with... typically.

Brewer: Considering he never redshirted and enters this season with only a single season of experience under his belt, I'd have to think he'd give serious consideration to sticking around for another season and I'd have to believe Herman would do cartwheels over the idea of having him for another season.

If Brewer can have the season he's capable of having, that would give him 2 seasons and he'd probably draw a decent grade from the NFL. Given his history of injuries, he'd be wise to jump.

... This dude having a solid scrimmage on Saturday and causing a bit of an Internet meltdown is the most normal thing about all of 2020.

Isn't there almost always a camp hero at WR every year?

I'm not sure I've ever seen a freshman catch 20 passes and make seven starts, only to be mostly completely dismissed as a potential impact piece in future seasons by a large portion of the Texas fan base. We're a group that usually goes ga-ga for players with such profiles and it's completely skipped Epps.

OB has pretty much never understood that Epps was a guy who arrived needing a lot of polish.

Is Chris Brown the most slept on senior defensive back with double-digit starts since ... I dunno ... in a while?

Hard to disagree. As much as people want to STILL tout Caden Sterns and BJ Foster, the simple fact is currently Brown is a superior player to both.

... If I'm Epps, Jared Wiley and Braydon Liebrock, I'm hoping Brewer has a good enough season to head on off to the NFL. All three guys are going to want his snaps in 2021.

Playing a heavy dose of 12 personnel will help. ;)

... Little birdies are worried about what's behind all of those starting linemen. Might not impact 2020 if the group stays healthy, but there all kinds of questions about this group when peeking into 2021.

Completely warranted. Obviously our sh*tting OL recruiting for '21 isn't helping.

. D’Shawn Jamison becoming a star in the Texas secondary? Instant reaction? Right on time.

Jamison is a taller, less stocky version of Quandre. Both can flat out ball. That's what happens when you move guys who were electric playmakers on offense is HS to DB when that choice has to be made.

... Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton are being talked about exactly the way you'd want a couple of in-state top-10 prospects to be talked about after a few weeks of practice. They both appear to be legit early on.

Please let one or even both be in the mold of a Rod Wright or better yet, Shaun Rogers. First time in a long time we've had non-tweener monster inside DL guys who can also move. Malcom Brown is the only recent one and he's quite frankly not been that recent.
