A massive frontcourt addition:
Xavier big man Lassina Traore committed to the University of Texas this morning becoming the fourth addition in the transfer portal under head coach Sean Miller.
Traore was on a visit to Texas this past weekend and came away impressed, ultimately finding mutual interest with the Longhorns, leading to his commitment. The 6’10” big man follows his former head coach at Xavier, Sean Miller, to Austin and is looking to bounce back after a season-ending knee injury that sidelined him in 2024. Known for his ability to run the floor and dominate the glass, Traore brings a high-motor presence to the frontcourt. He could potentially slide into the power forward spot alongside Vokietaitis at center, forming a physical and athletic duo that gives Texas a new identity in the paint. With Traore now in the fold, Texas boasts the 16th best incoming transfer class and ranks 13th nationally in overall transfer activity (accounting for both incoming and outgoing players). The Longhorns still have five scholarships available, with the NCAA expected to raise the maximum number of scholarship players per team from thirteen to fifteen.
An answer at point guard soon?
2025 four-star point guard Nyk Lewis was in Iowa this past weekend for a visit. The Texas target is expected to decide on a school soon with Texas potentially being in the play for his commitment.
Lewis is a name that’s come up in previous Portal Kombat write-ups, and for good reason. He’s highly efficient in pick-and-roll situations, thrives in transition, and consistently finds open shooters in drive-and-kick scenarios. Simply put, Lewis could be the missing piece Texas needs at the point guard position. With multiple years of eligibility remaining, he has the potential to develop into a major contributor under head coach Sean Miller. That said, the Longhorns will face stiff competition, with both Vanderbilt and Iowa making strong pushes for the D.C. native. But if Lewis ends up choosing Texas, the Longhorns could be looking at a significant leap forward in year one of the Sean Miller era.
Iowa’s still not done:
Earlier today, Kansas State guard Brendan Hausen announced that he will be committing to the University of Iowa for this season. Texas reached out to the guard earlier in this portal window, but the 6’4” guard out of Amarillo, Texas, ended up selecting Ben McCollum’s Hawkeyes.
While Texas did reach out and show interest in junior guard Brendan Hausen, he didn’t seem like the point guard solution the Longhorns were looking for. Instead, he likely would’ve filled more of a catch-and-shoot role within the offense. That said, Hausen is an elite perimeter threat who now joins Bennett Stirtz at Iowa, where the duo is poised to help the Hawkeyes make a serious run at the Big Ten title this upcoming season.
Hang it on the fridge:
Texas commit Matas Vokietaitis shows off his visit on the forty acres this past week in the Texas campus. Vokietaitis is a seven-foot center from FAU and was named AAC Freshman of the Year, where he averaged 10.2 PPG, and 5.5 RPG this past season.
