Jalenb saw this BB article about A&M picking up a star guard from OU what are your thoughts.

New Texas A&M head coach Bucky McMillan has landed his fifth player from the transfer portal. Former Oklahoma star guard Duke Miles, who is in College Station today, committed to the Aggies before visiting Tennessee, USC, and Baylor over the next few days. This continues to prove that McMillan is now one of the top recruiters in the SEC amid his first season.

With Miles' addition, McMillan now has seven players on the roster. Guard Jacari Lane (North Alabama), forward Zach Clemence (Kansas), forward Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana), and guard Josh Holloway (Samford) are the other transfer additions who will either start or come off the bench next season.

Miles has shown the ability to be an elite scoring option on the court after averaging 17.5 points per game and shooting 52% from the field during the 2023 season. Last season, his scoring average lowered to 9.4 points per game, but he continued to shoot above 50% from the field and 43% from 3-point range. Bucky McMillan's scheme is built on speed and offensive efficiency, two areas where Miles thrives.

"Star power" is everything in today's college basketball landscape, and combined with Jacari Lane and Mackenzie Mgbako, Texas A&M's roster looks drastically improved compared to just three weeks ago, and this is just the beginning. Again, the fact that McMillan landed a commitment from one of the top portal additions as soon as he stepped on campus is a good sign for the program's future under the Alabama native.

Transfer Portal Acquisitions Ranking Analysis

Alternate title: Are we overcooking the grits?

There is so much excitement around the new incoming transfers, I found myself asking how excited should I be? How do the spring additions stack up to what was available in the winter? Are these players really, really strong enough to guarantee Texas is back in the semi-finals or better?

Spoiler: I still have no idea, but I took a peek at Rivals and 247's transfer rankings...

TE. Huge need and Jack Endries seems like exactly what we need. And it sounds like he was the second-best option behind Max Klare.
  • 247 rates Endries as the 14th best TE Portal option behind #1 Klare
  • Rivals rate him as the 5th best behind Klare
WR. Feels like grabbing Mosley was perfect and will be exactly what Arch needs
  • 247 rates Mosley as the 46th best WR portal option behind 1 Eric Singleton (Auburn), 2 Duce Robinson (FSU), 3 Nic Anderson (LSU), 4 Zachariah Branch (Georgia), 5 KC Concepcion (ATM)
  • Rivals rates Mosley as the 15th best WR option behind 1 Eric Singleton (Auburn), 2 Duce Robinson (FSU), 3 Dane Key (Nebraska) 4 Noah Thomas (Georgia) 5 CJ Daniels (Miami)
DT. Just how good is Watson and Brevard? Will they fill in for Collins and Broughton?
  • 247: 6 Maraad Watson, 15 Cole Brevard, 18 Travis Shaw, 32 Hero Kanu, 33 Lavon Johnson. Other Notables: 1 Keeshawn Silver (USC), 3 Williams Nwaneri, 7 Jaheim Oastis (Colorado), 8 Bear Alexander (Oregon), 9 Lee Hunter (Tech), 57 Jaray Bledsoe (Miss St), 62 Sydir Mitchell (LSU), 101 Aaron Bryant (Vandy)
  • Rivals: 3 Maraad Watson, 5 Cole Brevard, 8 Travis Shaw, 27 Hero Kanu. Other Notables: 1 David Stone, 2 Keeshawn Silver (USC), 6 Lee Hunter (Tech), 9 Jaheim Oastis (Colorado) 16 Bear Alexander (Oregon), 28 Jaray Bledsoe (Miss St), 45 Tiaoalii Savea (TBD), 51 Sydir Mitchell (LSU), 78 Aaron Bryant (Vandy)

What does all this mean? Probably nothing. But it looks like we got a lot better on the DL. While I trust Rivals more than I do 247, it looks like we filled holes on offense, but the rankings suggest we did well in the spring, but left meat on the bone in winter. I'm not so sure I agree with the ranking. I think both Mosley V and Endries are better than the rankings have them slotted, but I am biased.

Jonah Williams

I feel odd being late to this party, but my parents died around Christmas so I've been a bit busy and haven't paid too much attention.

I know Jonah is ripping the cover off the ball for the baseball team, but how do we expect him to contribute in the fall? The DB room is crowded and he is obviously playing baseball and not in spring drills. However he's a 5* is clearly super confident kid. Could we see him play some special teams?

Obviously the hyperbole can be run with pretty quickly. Just hoping to get a summary of what we could expect this fall.

Portal Kombat: Another WR and DT lined up and ready to go?

Day 4 of the Spring Portal brought a little bit of calm after a flurry of activity on Friday.

Here's a recap of everything you need to know...

Another DT to keep an eye on...

One player that we've been told the Longhorns are very hot to trot after is Syracuse defensive tackle Maraad Watson, who entered the Portal on Friday after earning freshman All-America honors in 2024 via 11 starts he made throughout the season.

The 6-3, 311-pound Watson played up and down the line of scrimmage for Syracuse this season and is seen as both a short- and long-term answer to the defensive tackle position by the Texas coaches.

According to On3's Hayes Fawcett, Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee are all schools to watch in his recruitment, but we've heard the Longhorns might be in an advanced stage for defensive tackle with three years of eligibility remaining.

Sark Stealing From His Alma Mater?

As soon aas BYU All-American kick returner Keelan Marion entered the Portal on Friday, it felt like a situation we should monitor closely.

In addition to earning All-America honors in 2024 for his kickoff return talents, he also caught 24 passes for 346 yards and a touchdown in the slot. It would allow the Longhorns to add some speed to the wide receiver unit and give the special teams a nuclear weapon on returns.

Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas, Miami and Arizona State all offered the 6-0, 195-pound native of Atlanta, who started his career at U.Conn and transferred to BYU in 2023.

Scattershooting...

* Houston safety A.J. Haulcy entered the Portal on Saturday after ranking as one of the best defensive backs in the Big 12 in 2024. Haulcy had started every game for the Cougars over the last two seasons and dominated in the Big 12, tying for first in interceptions with five and finishing second in pass breakups with 13.

* One of the top available cornerbacks in the Portal is former Stanford standout Julian Neal, who transferred to Arkansas on Saturday after transferring to the Cardinal in December from Fresno State. The Razorbacks also aded one of the top edge players in the Portal on Saturday with the commitment of Troy standout Phillip Lee.

* Michigan picked up a running back commitment from U.Mass standout C.J. Hester, who is the second running back commitment the Wolverines have signed in the Portal. He joins former Alabama 5-star Justice Haynes.

Portal Kombat: How much gas does Texas have in the tank?

Another name on the list:
Texas has reached out to Washington guard Mekhi Mason. The 6’5” Junior out of Gilbert, Arizona, averaged 9.9 PPG, 1.0 SPG, and shot 40.2% from beyond the arc this past season for the Huskies.
Mason would be a valuable offensive addition for the Horns, averaging nearly 10 points per game and shooting over 40% from three. The Arizona native has the potential to be a strong off-ball presence for Texas, especially with his impressive shooting ability. Mason nailed 8 threes from beyond 25+ feet and excels without the ball, ranking in the 94th percentile in catch-and-shoot situations and the 85th percentile in spot-up situations. While he doesn’t thrive in fast-break scenarios, ranking in the 35th percentile in transition, his ability to apply pressure to opposing defenses with his range makes him a solid addition to Texas' perimeter game.

Interesting… Interesting:
North Dakota State guard Jacari White has committed to the University of Virginia. White had Texas in his top five schools earlier this week but at the end of the day the 6’3” Senior chose the Cavaliers over schools such as Texas, Virginia Tech, Houston, Ole Miss, and West Virginia.
White had previously revealed his top five schools, which included Texas, Houston, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss, and West Virginia, so his commitment to Virginia definitely came as a surprise. The Cavaliers land a great pickup in Jacari White, who averaged 17.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this past season for the Bisons. While Texas was in the running for him, the Longhorns have now shifted their focus to other guard options in the portal.

The eye of the Tiger:
Omaha star forward Marquel Sutton has committed to LSU. Texas reached out to Sutton earlier in this portal window and after the Senior averaged 19.1 PPG, and 8.0 RPG it’s safe to understand why.
Sutton could have been the perfect forward for Sean Miller’s system, checking nearly every box. The 6'9" senior is an excellent rebounder and a versatile scorer inside the paint, unafraid of contact and able to draw fouls at a high rate. His ability to get to the free-throw line would have been a valuable asset for Texas. However, LSU has added another strong piece to their roster this offseason, quietly having a solid portal window so far.

Georgetown Bound:
Arizona guard KJ Lewis has committed to the University of Georgetown. Texas reached out to the Duncanville native earlier in this window but instead the 6'4" Sophomore will be going to Georgetown and playing for the Hoyas.
In my opinion, one of the best two-way guards in the portal, Lewis would have been a great fit for not only Texas but any program. Averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists, he demonstrated his efficiency on both ends of the court, especially defensively. It’s definitely a tough blow for the Horns to see such a highly touted combo guard go elsewhere, as he could have made an instant impact in year one of the Sean Miller era.

Last but not least:
San Francisco guard Tyrone Riley has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and will be returning to the University of San Francisco. Texas held a Zoom meeting with the California native on Sunday, March 30th, but ultimately, Riley has decided to stay with the Dons for another season.
Texas showed interest in the 6'6" freshman, so Riley returning to San Francisco is definitely a setback for the Horns' plans. While I believe Riley has the potential to make a bigger name for himself next season at San Francisco, Texas still has time to address key needs, particularly in the guard position. More importantly, the Horns are still lacking depth in the frontcourt, specifically at power forward and center. With the 2025-2026 season approaching, Texas needs to address these weaknesses sooner rather than later, but I believe they will be able to fill these gaps in due time.

The race for Stojakovic is heating up:
California transfer guard Andrej Stojakovic visited Illinois yesterday. As the 6’7” guard’s recruitment is beginning to heat up, Stojakovic is hearing from North Carolina, Florida, Clemson, LSU, Cincinnati, UConn and more.
While Texas was one of the finalists for Stojakovic coming out of high school, it seems the Longhorns have their work cut out for them this time around and are not currently in serious contention for the California native. Illinois appears to be the team to beat in his recruitment so far, but with programs like UConn, North Carolina, and others involved, the sweepstakes for Stojakovic is still active. Considering the trend of commitments following visits this offseason, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a decision announced soon. Stojakovic remains one of the top guards in the transfer portal and is expected to make an immediate impact wherever he ends up next season.

What a way to end on a bang:
Arkansas guard Boogie Fland is entering the transfer portal. The standout Freshman posted an impressive 14.9 PPG, 5.7 APG, and 3.4 RPG this past season for the Razorbacks. Coming out of high school, Fland was a five-star guard and was ranked 10th in the country, via Rivals.
Fland instantly becomes one of the best point guards in the portal, perhaps the best depending on who you’re asking. He is an impact player on both ends posting a 2.9 OPBM rating and a 1.9 DBPM rating while also tallying a 10.5 turnover rate, the best on Arkansas this past season. While this news is still fresh and we’ll have to see just who is in the mix when it comes to the Freshman phenom, Texas could absolutely use someone like Fland for year one in the Sean Miller era. Fland did enter with a “Do Not Contact” tag so he does have a destination in mind upon entering the portal and we’ll just have to see who wins the race for the former five-star point guard.

A friendly reminder:
While the transfer portal closes at 11 PM CT on April 22 (today), that deadline only applies to players entering their names, it doesn’t mean they must decide on a new school by then. With that in mind, I expect Texas to become more active once they have a clearer picture of who’s officially in the portal and can better assess how to spend their NIL budget based on the available talent. Below is a better outlook as to who Texas is expected to have return for the 2025-2026 season, and who they are targeting from both the portal and high school.
